Principles of orchestration and the analysis of musical gestures / Renier Jacobus Meyer.

Composing or arranging for orchestra is a skill which is hard to learn and hard to teach. Literature on orchestration is comprehensive in terms of rules of thumb and these heuristic tools are sometimes called principles of orchestration. However, a study of the literature on orchestration revealed that these 'principles' are not theories about the outcomes and effects of specific decisions made by composers. An exception is the work of George McKay who does indeed establish principles of orchestration to some extent. Granting a few exceptions, literature on orchestration takes as point of departure recommendations about techniques of orchestration and illustrates these techniques with analyses of existing compositions for orchestra. In this study I invert the approach followed in the literature and take music analysis as a point of departure for my study. I used an existing and conventional analysis of Claude Debussy's Syrinx for solo flute from the book Sonic Design: The Nature of Sound and Music by Robert Cogan and Pozzi Escot (1976) as context for my own analysis of Syrinx in which the less familiar type of analysis – the analysis of musical gestures and musical forces – can be understood. This analysis formed the basis for my orchestral composition titled Ananke which is based upon musical gestures from Syrinx. A reinterpretation of Cogan and Escot's analysis of Debussy's Syrinx enabled me to identify the musical gestures I used as a basis for my orchestral composition. Musical gestures are understood in this dissertation in terms of the theory of musical forces by Steve Larson. The objective in composing Ananke, based upon material from Syrinx by Debussy, is to explore different ways in which the musical gestures can be orchestrated in order to amplify the three musical forces namely musical gravity, musical magnetism and musical inertia. This process of composing the orchestral composition enabled me to construe principles of orchestration concerning musical forces and the different ways in which musical forces can be amplified. I found that the approach I followed in this study can indeed be employed in order to investigate and construe principles of orchestration, taking music analysis as a point of departure. Pastorale berading en mentorskap by ouer-kind verhoudings in die Suid-Afrikaanse konteks / Johannes Hendrik Strydom

The focus of this study is on pastoral counselling and mentorship in the South African context and how it can contribute to the improvement of parent-child relationships. The Practical Theological model of Osmer is used as a framework in which the study is conducted. It consists of the Descriptive-empirical, Interpretative, Normative and Pragmatic tasks (which, for the purpose of the study, are called methods of approximation). In the first chapter the emphasis is on the way in which the study will be conducted with the aim of obtaining positive outcomes. This is also addressed in Chapter 2 by means of empiric research. Interviews are conducted with 24 participants that consist of parents and children. The aim of this is to determine how many problems really occur within families in a South African context. Many problems in this regard have come to light. The third chapter is mainly dedicated to a literature study that discusses the effect of positive and negative outcomes through the application of Biblical principles and mentorship within families. The effect of negative or positive parenthood is discussed as well as the effect it has on the child in his/her development process. Parents can learn many lessons from this chapter so that their children won’t have to grow up with emotional anguish. In the fourth chapter the theological aspects are discussed and proof is given for the value of these aspects as addressed by theological experts. Moral values, pastoral models, the value of the Holy Spirit and how God is portrayed are discussed here. These principles also contribute to happier families. In the fifth chapter attempts are made to find summarising solutions for this study’s initial problem statement, research question and central theoretical argument. Various results and conclusions can be made to find answers to the different key terms. Problem identification and problem solving techniques are discussed. Compliance with the Batho Pele principles in a primary health care context / Idah Deliwe Khumalo

In this study the focus is on Batho Pele (a Sotho translation for 'people first'), an initiative to get people that work in the public services to be service orientated and to strive for excellence towards continuous service delivery improvement (SA, 2004a:8). Batho Pele consist of a framework with two primary functions that apply to this study; service delivery to people as the customers (patients in this study) and the possibility to hold individual public servants (health care personnel in this study) accountable for poor service delivery. This, in fact, implies that poor performance lead to poor service delivery; thus, compliance with the Batho Pele principles plays a pivotal role to improve quality health care service delivery. The purpose of the study was to make recommendations to enhance the current compliance with the Batho Pele principles in a Primary Health Care (PHC) context that would positively improve quality care and patient satisfaction. A non–experimental, quantitative, descriptive study was undertaken within the philosophical framework of the Batho Pele principles as well as the Patients‘ Right Charter. All participants completed a structured questionnaire to determine the level of compliance with the Batho Pele principles as experienced by the patients and viewed by the health care personnel in a PHC context. The data collected, was analysed using descriptive statistics. Four PHC clinics were involved, situated at Umzinyathi District Health in the Kwazulu Natal (KZN) Province of South Africa. The study included two patient–population samples, based on convenience; the participants that visited the clinics (n=132) and the participants visited by the researcher at home (n=101). Fifty– six (n=56) health care personnel who voluntary agreed to participate in the study were an all–inclusive sample. The findings revealed that the patients in the study felt more secure to answer the questions on their experiences regarding compliances with the Batho Pele principles at home and this could be an important consideration when conducting patient satisfaction surveys. It was also clear that patients were more dissatisfied than health care personnel in most questions asked regarding their experience on the compliance with the Batho Pele principles in a PHC context. In a changing South Africa with a new education system, it has become necessary to determine the degree to which multicultural guidance is provided in secondary schools. The aim of the research was to: • Identify by means of a literature study, the principles of multicultural guidance in a number of countries abroad; • determine empirically, the degree to which the principles of guidance are applied in multicultural schools in the Gauteng Province. To this end concepts such as culture, ethnicity, race, racism, multicultural education, guidance and multicultural guidance had to be described. An historical approach to multicultural education and the research with regard to multicultural guidance were described at length. The development of school guidance in multicultural schools in South Africa was subsequently discussed in more detail, especially the implementation of an effective guidance programme in multicultural schools. An in-depth discussion with regard to the principles of guidance in general and of multicultural guidance in particular, as well as guidance in multicultural schools, were highlighted. An empirical investigation was done by means of frequency tables, correlation coefficients and factor analyses. These were subsequently interpreted: The most important finding was that multicultural guidance in secondary schools does not receive its due. Several deficiencies were identified in this regard. It is recommended that the Gauteng Education Department should pay specific attention to specialised training programmes in that province. The time has come that the Head of Department : Guidance/Guidance teacher should make certain theoretical as well as practical changes to guidance. Multicultural guidance should be ethically-founded. Multicultural perspectives should be built into education, and specifically into guidance programmes.
