How To Measure the Benefits of BIM - A Case Study ApproachJanuary 2011 (has links)
abstract: As a term and method that is rapidly gaining popularity, Building Information Modeling (BIM) is under the scrutiny of many building professionals questioning its potential benefits on their projects. A relevant and accepted calculation methodology and baseline to properly evaluate BIM's benefits have not been established, thus there are mixed perspectives and opinions of the benefits of BIM, creating a general misunderstanding of the expected outcomes. The purpose of this thesis was to develop a more complete methodology to analyze the benefits of BIM, apply recent projects to this methodology to quantify outcomes, resulting in a more a holistic framework of BIM and its impacts on project efficiency. From the literature, a framework calculation model to determine the value of BIM is developed and presented. The developed model is applied via case studies within a large industrial setting where similar projects are evaluated, some implementing BIM and some with traditional non-BIM approaches. Cost or investment metrics were considered along with benefit or return metrics. The return metrics were: requests for information, change orders, and duration improvements. The investment metrics were: design and construction costs. The methodology was tested against three separate cases and results on the returns and investments are presented. The findings indicate that in the tool installation department of semiconductor manufacturing, there is a high potential for BIM benefits to be realized. The evidence also suggests that actual returns and investments will vary with each project. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.S. Construction 2011

VÝZNAM BENEFITŮ V ODMĚŇOVÁNÍ VE VYBRANÉM PODNIKU / IMPORTANCE OF BENEFITS IN REWARD SYSTEM IN A SELECTED COMPANYŠPERLOVÁ, Lenka January 2011 (has links)
The aim of the thesis is to evaluate importance of benefits in reward system in a selected company and to recommend steps that would lead to increased efficiency of their use. In the first part of this thesis there is a comprehensive look at the remuneration strategy, which consists of cash compensation and employee benefits. After definining the concept of benefits I concentrated on their structuring from different perspectives. The main part of the theoretical part is aimed to evaluate of different types of benefits. At the end of this section I describe current trends in the area of employee benefits. In the first section of the practical part of the thesis I mentioned a short characterization of the selected company. The practical part aims to analyze the provided benefits. Employee benefits system is divided into the following areas: vocational and language training, benefits and housing stabilization policy. I also evaluate importance of the current system of providing employee benefits in the selected company by conducting of satisfaction surveys. The conclusion focuses on the suggestion of possible improvements that would increase efficiency in the provision of benefits.

Community Benefit Funds and Wind Power: A Scottish Case StudyMathers, Adam January 2018 (has links)
The Scottish government’s aim of deriving 100 per cent of the nation’s electricity from renewable sources is dependent on the utilisation of wind energy. Social barriers, however, have continued to threaten these targets. Community benefit funds have often been paraded as the most common way of improving public attitudes towards wind farms in the United Kingdom, although little empirical evidence exists to support this notion. Using the proposed Ourack wind farm, approximately three and a half miles north of Grantown-on-Spey in the Scottish Highlands, this case study, consisting of a sequential explanatory research design comprised of an initial close-ended survey followed by in-depth semi-structured interviews, sought to explore the community’s perceptions of community benefits, identify the type of fund that the community wanted, and investigate the role of such benefit provisions in altering perceptions of wind farms. The key findings indicated that the majority of participants were in favour of benefits being provided, they preferred funding to be directed towards community organisations, and approximately one third of research participants (31.6 per cent) perceived the proposed wind farm in a more positive light after considering the possible benefits the region would accrue. Furthermore, the research indicated the need for community benefits to become a standardised part of the planning process, thus reducing the likelihood of financial benefits being perceived as bribes, and allowing developers to provide greater information about any proposed benefits scheme prior to applying for planning permission. There are implications of this study for academics researching the role of community benefits in wind farm planning, and policymakers and developers for understanding the wants and needs of community members.
