Dungeon memories: Black African's experience of racism in Berlin todayMapani, Paul Simandala 11 1900 (has links)
This study explores black African migrants' experience of racism in Berlin, today. Its vantage point
is that of a missiological discipline. Since racism is a very complex phenomenon, both in the church
and society; the study therefore, adopted a multidisciplinary approach. This helps us to better
understand the different theoretical nuances, which inform racism as an ideology and, as a social
construct. Against this backdrop, the study engaged the “pastoral cycle” (cycle of missionary
praxis) by Holland and Henriot and developed by Cochrane et al as its theological framework.
The research methodology consisted of data collection, interpreting and analyzing (comparing and
contrasting primary sources in light of data collected). Personal narratives of research participants'
experience of racism in a semi-structured format, formed part of the methodology, in establishing
ecclesiastical, political, social and structural climate on how they contribute to the way that black
African migrants experience racism in Berlin, today. Two forms of data collection were employed:
Qualitative interview and observation instruments. / Biblical and Ancient Studies / M.A. (Theology)

Church planting in an a-religious, post-socialistic context : a practical theological study with the focus on the Marzahn-Hellersdorf district Of East Berlin, GermanyKeller, Stefan, M.Th. 28 February 2007 (has links)
The point of departure in this dissertation is the situation in the Marzahn-Hellersdorf region of
East-Berlin, where, 17 years after the political turnaround, only three new Christian
communities have established themselves., However it is, known that there have been many
attempts at church planting during these years. In this district there seems to be a high
percentage of people who are resistant towards western theology or ecclesiology respectively.
That is why the focus of the dissertation is on those people who live in an a-religious context
surrounded by post-socialistic influences.
Social scientific approaches and methods have been integrated and utilised as part of this
practical-theological research project. The benefit of this was the developing of aspects of a
practical-theological perspective that could be used for a specific ecclesiology with special
reference to church planting.
Ultimately, three hypotheses have been developed. The implications of these hypotheses
could serve as essential material for prospective church planting efforts in the area. / Philosophy, Practical and Systematic Theology / M. Th. Missiology

Mission in der Nachbarschaft : eine empirisch-theologische Studie in Berlin, märkisches Viertel / Mission in the neighbourhood : an empirical-theological study in Berlin, märkisches ViertelGibhardt, Matthias 12 1900 (has links)
This research study evaluates the project status of the family centre for social and missionary work FACE in Berlin, Märkisches Viertel. The dissertation starts out with an outline of the theological and social-scientific framework which determines the research work. Within this framework, the concept of community diaconia as well as the correlation between diaconia and mission are dominant. The project is based on the idea of socially-relevant church devel-opment (Zyklus gesellschaftsrelevanter Gemeindearbeit; ZGG), which in a following step is documented in its application and then analysed using the empirical-theological practice cy-cle. It is the objective of this qualitative study to determine whether FACE has social rele-vance. How did neighbours perceive FACE? Did contact with FACE lead to changes in their lives? The concluding missiological interpretation of the research study is conducted follow-ing the structure of the „trialogical interaction of missional conversation“ between the gospel, church and culture. / Christian Spirituality, Church History & Missiology / M. The Praxis of Civil Society: Associational Life, the Politics of Civility, and Public Affairs in the Weimar RepublicWeber, Peter C. January 2014 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / This dissertation analyzes the efforts to develop a pluralistic political culture and democratic practices of governance through the training of democratic leaders in Germany's first school of public affairs, the German School of Politics. The investigation of the thought-leaders that formed this school illustrates two main points. First, through the prism of the School, I detail the efforts to develop a conception of civil society that, by being grounded in civility, could retie social bonds and counter the brutalization of politics characteristic of the post-World War One years. By providing practical knowledge, courses in public affairs could not only free Germans from the blinders of ideologies, but also instill in them an ethos that would help viewing the political enemy as an opponent with an equal right to participate in the political process. Secondly, I point to the limits of trans-national philanthropy in supporting the development of civil society in young democracies. By analyzing the relationship between U.S. foundations and the School, I focus on the asymmetry that existed between American ideals of democracy and the realities of the German political system. This study thus focuses on the dynamics between the actions of institutions and organizations, and the broader social behaviors that constitute public life.
