Comparing Five Empirical Biodata Scoring Methods for Personnel Selection

Ramsay, Mark J. 08 1900 (has links)
A biodata based personnel selection measure was created to improve the retention rate of Catalog Telemarketing Representatives at a major U.S. retail company. Five separate empirical biodata scoring methods were compared to examine their usefulness in predicting retention and reducing adverse impact. The Mean Standardized Criterion Method, the Option Criterion Correlation Method, Horizontal Percentage Method, Vertical Percentage Method, and Weighted Application Blank Method using England's (1971) Assigned Weights were employed. The study showed that when using generalizable biodata items, all methods, except the Weighted Application Blank Method, were similar in their ability to discriminate between low and high retention employees and produced similar low adverse impact effects. The Weighted Application Blank Method did not discriminate between the low and high retention employees.

COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF SERVICE ORIENTATION AND SERVICE CLIMATE IN THE UNITED STATES AND RUSSIAN HOTEL INDUSTRIES

Dusek, Gary A. 25 April 2014 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to evaluate individual hotel employee perceptions of their service orientation and the support they receive from co-workers and their employer to discover the impact of these perceptions on the employee's feelings of their job satisfaction, commitment to their organization, their intention to leave their organization and intention to leave their industry. A comparative analysis of results from the United States and Russia reveals differences in these relations in the two countries. Analysis using Partial Least Squares Path Modeling for developing a measurement model and model estimation using a combined data set, US data set and a Russian data set. This research study included 141 American hotel employees and 107 Russian hotel employees. Service orientation, co-worker support and employee support were positively related to increased job satisfaction in the United States and Russia. In both countries, service orientation was negatively related to an employee's intention to leave the hospitality industry and co-worker support was positively related to organizational commitment. Country differences occurred where items were only significant in one country. In Russia, organizational support and co-worker support were negatively related to intention to leave their employer. In the United States, organizational support had a positive relation to organizational commitment. Surprisingly, co-worker support had a positive relation to intention to leave the industry in the United States. This may indicate that excessive co-worker support might undermine the need to achieve of highly service oriented hotel employees, resulting in a flight from the service industry to a more challenging industry.

This work proposes iAware a model for patients ubiquitous care with anxiety, depression and stress disorders using gamification and biodata. Depression and anxiety are the most prevalent mental disorders, reaching more than 560 million people worldwide. Because they share many characteristics these two disorders often manifest themselves together. In addition, stress is one of the related factors with depression and anxiety, being relevant in the analysis of these disorders. This study was carried out through a own study on anxiety, depression and stress disorders (TADE), their treatments and the use of gamification as a means of engagement. Two possible contributions were found, first about the gamification effectiveness evaluation, as none of the works tried to analyze the effects of using gamification in TADE treatment. The second after identify that none of the studies used biological data (biodata) for patient monitoring. The iAware monitors and applies interventions for the patient at the most appropriate time, based on the patient’s background history. Thus technologies and tools available were identified for the development and evaluation of iAware effectiveness. Through A/B tests with a clinical population, the degree of effectiveness in the engagement of the patient to the treatment provided by gamification was evaluated. The results obtained through the evaluation of the interaction of the patients indicate that of the patients evaluated the group that used the iAware gamified obtained a greater engagement than the group that used the version without gamification. The patients who used iAware got more occurrences of anxiety at home and in the afternoon and evening shifts. Both patients and psychologists have found the use of iAware useful in the anxiety treatment routine.

Dialogues with the unwell body : Rethinking the notion of wellbeing in HCI from feminist and somaesthetic perspectives

Kaklopoulou, Eirini January 2022 (has links)
With the emergence of ubiquitous computing and biosensing technologies, there is a growing interest to explore wellbeing within design research. This paper unpacks the notion of wellbeing from somaesthetic and feminist perspectives. Through a series of evocative first-person design explorations, a soma-based design workshop, and a cultural probes study, I re-think wellbeing along the concept of the ever-changing body, a continuously and holistically changing organism with human and non-human features which is influenced by society, culture and economy. This contributes to a new understanding on how we relate to wellbeing and to practices of care and wellness, and how might we design technologies for awareness and understanding of our wellbeing. As the process unfolds, I discuss alternative design approaches for digital wellbeing considering aspects of touch and discomfort, materiality as a probe and care for the more-than-human. I argue that the slowness and openness of somaesthetic design paired with the open-ended character of cultural probes reveal tensions that exist between individuals and wellbeing and facilitate a greater diversity of bodies and minds. With this project, I propose an open-ended design approach to wellbeing building on the soma design space that can be used in the design of biosensing technologies for wellbeing.

The effects of biographical data on the prediction of domain knowledge

Wolman, Stacey D. 16 August 2005 (has links)
This study examined the effects of life experience information on the prediction of domain knowledge. Specifically, it was hypothesized that individuals with a higher level of experience within a domain would have a higher level of domain knowledge, and that attribution of experience (e.g., educational experience, extracurricular experience, etc) would influence the type of domain knowledge assessment on which an individual was most successful (e.g., open-ended scenarios vs. multiple-choice questions). In order to test these hypotheses, participants completed a biodata measure, various ability and non-ability measures, and a set of domain knowledge tests. Hypotheses were evaluated in the context of regressions and structural equation modeling. Results showed that biodata had significant predictive validity for domain knowledge.

The Cross-National Generalizability of Biographical Data: An Examination within a Multinational Organization

Ducey, Adam J. 31 October 2016 (has links)
In an increasingly interconnected economy, organizations are frequently operating beyond national borders. International partnerships, joint ventures, mergers, and acquisitions have expanded the labor market from a domestic to an international perspective. In this environment, multinational organizations demand cost-effective personnel selection tools to help them identify top talent from different countries, geographical regions, and cultures. The purpose of the current research was to evaluate the global utility of biographical data inventories, a standardized self-report selection method that asks job applicants questions about prior behaviors and experiences. Results from two studies involving participants from 7 country clusters, across four continents, and two different occupational groups, managers and manufacturing technicians, provided evidence to support the hypothesis that the validity of biographical data inventories, empirically keyed in the United States, generalizes to all country clusters examined. These results are important because they suggest that multinational organizations interested in deploying a single standardized selection system across geographical boundaries may want to consider including biographical data inventories, in addition to other commonly used instruments such as cognitive ability and personality assessments, to enhance the overall validity of their selection systems. This approach has the potential to reduce organizations’ costs related to developing, implementing, and maintaining selection processes while enabling them to manage their human capital efficiently by ensuring all new hires have the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to succeed on the job and contribute to their strategic objectives.

Designing for Stress Reduction by Connecting Heart Rate to Sounds / Design för minskning av stress genom att koppla hjärtfrekvens till ljud

Feng, Shuo January 2016 (has links)
With the progress of society, an increasing number of people pay close attention to their health. In this study, we designed a Heart Rate based interactive sound to investigate how biodata-based interactive sounds can affect the well-being of people. We used a variety of approaches to analyzing the data and feedback from users. Firstly, the Trier Social Stress Test protocol was employed as a basis for the test. Also, a package of cultural probes such as photos, diaries and cards were used to collect data from users' everyday life. Recruited by using a snowball sampling technique, five users took and completed the test. From the analysis, we identified problems with our design and realized how to potentially improve the device in the future. The main conclusion that could be drawn was that Heart Rate-based interactive sounds can help users to reduce stress, but that most individuals were more willing to listen to steady sounds in order to relax.

Voyria

Löthén, Iris January 2023 (has links)

A new use of frame-of-reference training: improving reviewers’ inferences from biodata information

Lundstrom, Joel Thomas January 1900 (has links)
Doctor of Philosophy / Department of Psychology / Patrick A. Knight / A commonly accepted practice in employment selection is to collect biographical information in the form of resumes. Surprisingly, little research is conducted in this area to learn how reviewers evaluate relevant biographical information and considerable less research is devoted to exploring possible methods on how to improve this evaluation process. Current research explored one possible training method that may later show great utility in improving accuracy and consistency in ratings for a number of work-related constructs. Frame-of-reference training, which is primarily utilized in the field of performance appraisal, was hypothesized to be a beneficial training technique in an effort to improve accuracy. Frame-of-reference (FOR) training attempts to create a common frame of reference among raters when assessing rates' behaviors. Through a process of practice and feedback, FOR training tunes raters to common notions of what good or poor would be on a particular dimension. The result is often more accurate ratings with less variation between raters. Personality (conscientiousness, extraversion, and agreeableness only), general cognitive ability, and organizational citizenship behaviors were the constructs of interest. The analysis provided initial support for most of the hypotheses which suggested that frame-of-reference training would create more accurate and reliable estimates of applicant's personality, cognitive ability, and even organizational citizenship behaviors. In addition to influencing participants' estimates of applicant's scores on a number of workplace constructs, it was also found that participants were influenced as a function of type of training on their willingness to interview and overall impressions of the applicants. Limitations and suggestions for future research are also discussed.
