Diatom communities across a gradient of acid mine drainage on the West Coast, South Island, New Zealand

Schowe, Kate January 2012 (has links)
Acid mine drainage (AMD) is a major environmental issue worldwide. On the West Coast of the South Island, New Zealand, numerous catchments receive AMD, with significant negative impacts on in-stream flora and fauna. Diatoms are commonly regarded as powerful biological indicators and may be found in high abundance in AMD-contaminated streams; however, relatively little work has been done on diatoms in mining environments in New Zealand. Initially, I conducted a survey of epiphytic diatom communities in 39 streams ranging from non-impacted reference streams to those severely impacted by AMD. Streams were assigned to one of four classes along an AMD gradient: circum-neutral reference, naturally acidic reference, moderately impacted, and severely impacted. There was a wide range in diatom taxonomic richness in reference and moderately impacted streams (8 – 33 taxa). Taxonomic richness was greatly reduced in severely impacted streams (1 – 5 taxa) at a threshold of pH 3.4 and was dominated by Pinnularia cf. acidophila (69 – 100% relative abundance). Community composition differed between circum-neutral reference, moderately, and severely impacted streams; however, naturally acidic and moderately impacted streams had similar diatom communities primarily composed of acid-tolerant Eunotia and Frustulia species. This indicated that diatoms are strongly structured by pH and able to tolerate moderate conductivity and metal concentrations without a corresponding shift in community composition. Survey data were then used to develop two diatom-based indices for streams impacted by AMD: a single Biotic Index and a Multimetric Index. While neither index was able to distinguish naturally acidic from moderately impacted streams, both indices successfully categorised streams as circum-neutral reference, moderately or severely impacted by AMD. These indices may be useful in assessing AMD impact on circum-neutral streams or in identifying when a stream has crossed a threshold from moderately to severely impacted by AMD. Diatoms would be especially useful as bioindicators of AMD if they respond rapidly to a change in mine discharge. To test this, mature algal biofilms were reciprocally transferred between circum-neutral reference streams and streams of varying degrees of AMD over a period of 13 days. Diatom mortality increased rapidly in the reciprocal transfer between reference and severely impacted streams. Reference communities resembled the ambient diatom community of severely impacted streams 13 days post-transfer. However, in the reverse transfer, a change in community composition was slow to occur. Diatoms respond faster to an increase in pollution than to pollution amelioration. Overall, results indicated that diatom communities may be a useful tool for monitoring the presence and magnitude of AMD in New Zealand streams.

Typologie et qualité biologique du réseau hydrographique de Wallonie basées sur les assemblages des macroinvertébrés <br> Typology and biological quality of the hydrographic network of Wallonia (Belgium) based on macroinvertebrate assemblages

Vanden Bossche, Jean-Pierre 12 September 2005 (has links)
L’amélioration de la qualité se manifeste principalement pour les états « mauvais » et « médiocre » s’élevant à l’état « moyen ».</p> <b>Abstract</b> <p align="justify"><i>River typology in Wallonia and invertebrate fauna characterization</i><br>Twenty-five river-types in Wallonia were defined according to the Water Framework Directive taking into account obligatory and optional factors gathered in three criteria: the size (from “brook” to “very large river”), the slope (gentle, medium and strong) and five natural regions (Loess, Condroz, Famenne, Arden and Jurassic summarising the obligatory altitude, latitude, longitude and geology factors). A multivariate approach applied to a large amount of samples (i.e. taxa lists) led to give a more accurate definition of some river-types and to discriminate seven river-type groups exhibiting similar faunal assemblages.</p> <p align="justify"><i>Type-specific reference conditions and ecological status definition of rivers in Wallonia using invertebrate biocenotic metrics</i><br> Faunal lists and IBGN (i.e. "Standardized Global Biological Index IBGN") metric values, evolving from the biological quality assessment network in Wallonia, were used to discriminate the river types and to define the reference sites, the reference conditions and the status class limits. South of the axis made by the Sambre & Meuse Rivers, involving four river-type groups, reference values and ecological status definition were based and calculated on a reference network of sites of high status. The "reference condition values” were defined as the median values of the metrics in all “high status” sites. Where no site of high status was available, i.e. in the others river-type groups north of the same axis and in the Rivers Sambre and Meuse themselves, reference conditions (or maximum ecological potential) and class limits were based on coefficients applied to “good status” sites and on expert judgement.</p> <p align="justify"><i>Intercalibration pilot exercise</i><br> Fifty samples were selected from R-C3 rivers (i.e. small, mid-altitude, siliceous) in Wallonia (corresponding to the “Arden’s brooks”) showing the widest range of ecological quality from high to bad status. Each Intercalibration Common Metric (ICM) was compared (linear and polynomial regression) to IBGN scores. The highest correlation was found with the synthetic ICM index, whose high R² (0.95) allows accurate and reliable intercalibration. To IBGN EQR (i.e. Equivalent Quality Ratio) = 1 corresponds a very close ICM index value (= 1.004). Consequently, the metric IBGN score is being proposed to act as the metric for the assessment of the invertebrate fauna ecological status in Wallonia, Belgium.</p> <p align="justify"><i>Exotic and invasive species</i><br> The recent opening of the canal Danube – Main in 1992 and the subsequent navigation allowed several Ponto-Caspian macroinvertebrate species to invade successively the Rhine and the River Meuse basins. From 1998 to 2000, the monitoring network recorded four new alien species in the River Meuse in Belgium: one Polychaeta (<i>Hypania invalida</i>) and three Crustacea (<i>Hemimysis anomala, Dikerogammarus villosus, D. haemobaphes</i>). Earlier, in 1995, the Asian Bivalvia <i>Corbicula fluminea</i> and the North American Amphipod <i>Crangonyx pseudogracilis</i> were also recorded for the first time. The invasions’ dynamics were studied and discussed.</p> <p align="justify"><i>Present biological status</i> (2000-2002) of surface water-bodies in Wallonia and biological status evolution over a one-decade period (1990-2002) is included and discussed in the study. A global quality improvement of 6 % is recorded for the period. Quality improvement concerns mainly the “bad” and “poor” status raising up to “moderate” status.</p>

Étude de l'état actuel et des variations temporelles de la composition de la macrofaune benthique des substrats meubles du golfe du Lion, Méditerranée occidentale / Study of the present state and of recent temporal changes in the benthic macrofauna composition of Gulf of Lions soft-bottoms macrobenthic communities, NW Mediterranean

Bonifácio, Paulo 26 February 2015 (has links)
My main aims consisted in: (1) assessing the present state and recent (1998-2010)changes in benthic macrofauna composition of the Gulf of Lions soft-bottom communities through the long term comparison of 91 stations; (2) testing the current paradigm regarding the control of those communities by climatic parameters through a 10-year monitoring of 4 stations located in the Bay of Banyuls-sur-Mer; (3) assessing the influence of Rhône River inputs on the composition of benthic macrofauna through the sampling, of 5 stations , under 4 hydrological regimes; and (4) updating the ecological quality status of Gulf of Lions benthic habitats. My results have shown the persistence ofthe same 3 communities between 1998 and 2010, the strong influence of both the NAO and the Rhône River on benthic macrofauna composition in the whole Gulf. They also showed a control of benthic macrofauna by climatic oscillations with the WeMO contributing most especially during wintert ime. Moreover, the stations most impacted by Rhône River inputs were located close to its mouth. They are negatively affected during floods and positively affected during dry periods. Lastly, Ihave updated the sensitivity/tolerance levels of Mediterranean species and confirmed the existence of major discrepancies in the results derived from different biotic indices used, although all tested indices indicated an overall stability in the ecological quality status of benthic habitats between 1998 and 2010.

Characterization of microbiota involved in aerobic (activated sludge) and anaerobic (UASB) processes in a food industry.

The increasing concentration of nutrients in receiving water bodies, especially nitrogen and phosphorus originating from domestic and industrial effluent discharges can cause eutrophication. In order to avoid that, the effluents must be properly treated for nutrients removal in wastewater treatment plants prior discharge. However, the role played by various groups of microorganisms found in wastewater treatment systems is not completely understood due to the complexity of interactions. This study aimed to characterize the structure and dynamics of microbial community (with focus on bacteria involved in the nitrogen cycle and microfauna) and evaluate the biological activity of aerobic and anaerobic reactors for wastewater treatment operated at a food industry. The physical and chemical parameters of the treatment plant were monitored. At the same time, hybridization in situ fluorescent assessed the structure and dynamics of bacterial community involved in the nitrogen cycle. The microfauna in the aerobic reactor were characterized and classified according to the Sludge Biotic Index. The sludge biological activity was assessed by respirometry assays and correlations were made between the microbiota found in the aerobic reactor and selected physicochemical parameters. The physical and chemical parameters analysed complied with the limits allowed by the federal and state regulations and parameters Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) and Kjeldahl nitrogen were reduced 99.8%, 99.6% and 74.9%, respectively. It was found the presence of both nitrite-oxidizing and ammonia-oxidizing bacteria in both reactors and in each sampling point within the reactors. Pseudomonas fluorescens bacteria also occurred in all collection points of both reactors. Among the microorganism groups observed in the activated sludge, crawling ciliates were the most frequent, followed by tecamoebians, rotifers, ciliates sessile, free natant ciliates, flagellates and other invertebrates. In addition, there was no difference between the densities of the groups found in Points 1 and 2 in the aerobic reactor and the Sludge Biotic Index was found equal to 8 (class I). The similarity between the presented Oxygen Consumption Rate of items 1 and 2 as well as the Oxygen Consumption Rate particularly between points 1 and 2 suggest that oxygen is distributed evenly within the aeration tank, causing the microorganisms to have similar growth conditions. The free natant ciliates were positively correlated with COD and BOD5 and sessile ciliates showed a negative correlation with the COD and the BOD5. Rotifers were negatively correlated with Suspended Volatile Solids in the aerobic reactor. Crawling ciliates, rotifers and the tecamoebians were positively correlated with the total microorganisms found in the aerobic reactor. The free natant ciliates showed a negative correlation with the sessile ciliates, total bacteria, Nitrobacter and other bacteria and a positive correlation with other invertebrates. The flagellates were negatively correlated with the total bacteria, while other bacteria were positively correlated. The other invertebrates showed a negative correlation with Nitrobacter.

Camelo, Flávio Roque Bernardes 18 February 2013 (has links)
Aquatic ecosystems have suffered intense pressure from human activities. Studies on water quality are important because they may indicate possible environmental impacts, and how these impacts disturb the aquatic ecosystem and the organisms that live there. As the assessment of water quality through physical and chemical parameters are insufficient to determine the ecological status of water biological monitoring has been presented as an effective method in determining this quality because it uses the structure of communities related to the environment as an indicator the degree of degradation. Thus the aim of this study was to investigate the benthic community in Uberabinha River Basin to propose an adaptation of BMWP to the regional reality of this basin, with the intention of establishing an initial diagnosis of the waters of the Triângulo Mineiro region. 308,176 organisms were identified in 64 taxa in the 28 sampling sites, of these, 6,145 distributed in 22 families belonged to the families of EPT. Among the points collected three were considered with excellent water quality, nine were considered of good quality, eight were considered satisfactory, seven had a poor quality of water and only one point was considered of terrible quality. When evaluating the points located on the Uberabinha river basin from the perspective of microrregions, then a tendency becomes clear by BMWP-TRI, where most of the points located upstream of the city were rated good to fair water, while most of the points on the perimeter urban and downstream of the city were classified as poor or very poor in relation to water quality. Through the results obtained by biomonitoring, we emphasize that the methodology adopted, was able to show changes in water quality conditions quite well. The score and rating points during the study period showed degradation processes in the studied environments.

Marín Guirao, Lázaro 08 March 2007 (has links)
The objective of the Thesis is to determine the present situation of the Mar Menor coastal lagoon in relation with the contamination caused by heavy metals coming from old mining activities through the use of ecotoxicological tools. It begins with the study of the entrance of mining wastes in the lagoon ecosystem, its distribution in the lagoon waters as well as their toxic effects. It continues assessing the bioavailability of metals contained in sediments of the lagoon by means of bioaccumulation studies and toxicity tests; their possible deleterious effects on marine phanerogams and associated invertebrate communities. It also determines the potential trophic transfer of metals in trophic webs of the lagoon studying the possible biomagnification of metals. Finally, the Thesis concludes determining the utility of some indicators proposed for their application in the European Water Framework Directive when they are applied to aquatic ecosystems impacted by toxic contamination (heavy metals).

L’amélioration de la qualité se manifeste principalement pour les états « mauvais » et « médiocre » s’élevant à l’état « moyen ».</p><p><p><b>Abstract</b><p><p><p align="justify"><i>River typology in Wallonia and invertebrate fauna characterization</i><br>Twenty-five river-types in Wallonia were defined according to the Water Framework Directive taking into account obligatory and optional factors gathered in three criteria: the size (from “brook” to “very large river”), the slope (gentle, medium and strong) and five natural regions (Loess, Condroz, Famenne, Arden and Jurassic summarising the obligatory altitude, latitude, longitude and geology factors). A multivariate approach applied to a large amount of samples (i.e. taxa lists) led to give a more accurate definition of some river-types and to discriminate seven river-type groups exhibiting similar faunal assemblages.</p><p><p align="justify"><i>Type-specific reference conditions and ecological status definition of rivers in Wallonia using invertebrate biocenotic metrics</i><br> Faunal lists and IBGN (i.e. Where no site of high status was available, i.e. in the others river-type groups north of the same axis and in the Rivers Sambre and Meuse themselves, reference conditions (or maximum ecological potential) and class limits were based on coefficients applied to “good status” sites and on expert judgement.</p><p><p align="justify"><i>Intercalibration pilot exercise</i><br> Fifty samples were selected from R-C3 rivers (i.e. small, mid-altitude, siliceous) in Wallonia (corresponding to the “Arden’s brooks”) showing the widest range of ecological quality from high to bad status. Consequently, the metric IBGN score is being proposed to act as the metric for the assessment of the invertebrate fauna ecological status in Wallonia, Belgium.</p><p><p align="justify"><i>Exotic and invasive species</i><br> The recent opening of the canal Danube – Main in 1992 and the subsequent navigation allowed several Ponto-Caspian macroinvertebrate species to invade successively the Rhine and the River Meuse basins. The invasions’ dynamics were studied and discussed.</p><p><p align="justify"><i>Present biological status</i> (2000-2002) of surface water-bodies in Wallonia and biological status evolution over a one-decade period (1990-2002) is included and discussed in the study. A global quality improvement of 6 % is recorded for the period. Quality improvement concerns mainly the “bad” and “poor” status raising up to “moderate” status.</p><p><p> / Doctorat en sciences, Spécialisation biologie animale / info:eu-repo/semantics/nonPublished
