That we might love him the more : an Irenaean theodicy built on Christ crucified

Gallaher, Brandon. January 2001 (has links)
[B]ut when He became incarnate, and was made man, He recapitulated in Himself the long history of human beings, and furnished us, in brief, with salvation (Irenaeus of Lyons. Against Heresies [= AH] III.xviii.1).This thesis attempts to clarify the mystery of evil through an analysis and contemporary restatement of Irenaeus of Lyons' theology interpreted as a 'Christocentric theodicy.' 'Theodicy' is here defined as God's response in the Gospel of Jesus Christ to suffering and the theological interpretation of that response. The response begins and ends with the cross as proclaimed in the Eucharist, that is, with God's own self-offering. It is argued that God allows suffering because He knows that only by the thankful union of our fallen knowledge of sin and death with the offering of Christ can we attain to a knowledge of eternal life: our adoption by the Father. Put otherwise, God's love for creation, and, therefore, His nature as a good and just Being, can be seen in the economy of salvation where evil is allowed to exist so that it might be transformed into good. The Introduction states the primary assumptions and limitations of the thesis' argument. Part I examines Irenaeus' Christocentric theology with particular emphasis on his understanding of the economy of salvation. Part II, building upon Part I, argues for a contemporary 'economic' or 'Christocentric' theodicy. The Conclusion recapitulates the whole thesis.

Augustine's theology of preaching

Randolph, David James January 1962 (has links)
Thesis (Ph.D.)--Boston University. / The purpose of this dissertation is to set forth systematically and to analyze critically the theology of preaching of Aurelius Augustine, 345-430 A.D. Available source material was studied resulting in a subject index which disclosed the most promising lines of investigation. The dissertation deals with Augustine's theological orientation as it bears on his theology of preaching, the nature and purpose of preaching, the content of preaching, the method of preaching, and the actual preaching of Augustine. The guiding principle of Augustine's theology of preaching in his understanding of God as personal being. The God of the Christian revelation both is and cares for man. As the ultimate, God commands ment to preach through authorities He ordains in history: Scripture, church, and reason. As personal being in His ultimate reality, He compels men to preach. Men are moved to witness to His gracious love supremely demonstrated in Jesus Christ. The purpose of preaching is rooted in the nature of God. Theology of preaching proceeds from this revealed truth. It begins in metaphysics and issued in history. Theology of preaching is concerned throughout with God and man as personal beings, existing in an inviolable Creator/creature relationship in which God interacts with man without absorbing him. Preaching in instruction in the Christian faith. Christians preach because the God revealed in Jesus Christ commands and compels them to preach. The content of Christian preaching is the faith of the church, proceeding from belief in the Trinity, which faith is at once ultimate and existential truth. The method of preaching consists fundamentally in the personal preparation of the preacher as a Christian, the determination of the subject from Scripture, interpretation of Scripture according to sound principles, and communication to the hearers. Communication is from person to persons in the presence of God. Theology of preaching effects itself in the act of preaching for which it provides the origin and structure. Major issues of Augustine's theology of preaching are viewed in the perspective of some aspects of subsequent theological thought and homiletical method. Much later thought and practice is found to be illuminating, but revision is necessitated only in the area of Augustine's biblical exegesis. Augustine's theology of preaching is found to be biblically sound, classically Christian, and rationally coherent. [TRUNCATED]

AVALIAÇÃO DO DESEMPENHO DE DIFERENTES MÉTODOS DE ANÁLISE DE ESTABILIDADE DE TALUDES EM BARRAGENS DE TERRA / PERFORMANCE ASSESSMENT OF DIFFERENT METHODS OF SLOPE STABILITY ANALYSIS IN EARTH DAMS

Pereira, Tonismar dos Santos 20 February 2013 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The diversity of sizes and uses of dams and embankments, in Brazil, is reflected, in terms of these structures, too. Some are impeccably designed, meeting safety standards consistent with national and international standards more stringent, while others have serious risks that safety limits are exceeded, and may even result in the disruption of the structure, given the complexity and excessive hand-labor calculations of slope stability. The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of the methods of slope stability analysis less accurate, to reduce the number of operations which make use the most accurate methods available in the literature. The development work was given from the performance index of 4 methods of calculating slope stability, being Fellenius (1936), Bishop (1955), Simplified Bishop (1995) and Janbu Simplified (1973) compared with the method of Spencer (1967) considered an exact method for calculating the safety factor, however, which requires more computational time to obtain the results. The procedure was performed in scenarios with different soil types, heights and inclinations of slopes, and for conditions subject to reservoir emptying fast and slow. Based on the calculated FS values were adjusted linear regression equations, where the dependent variable was obtained by the FS equation Spencer, and independent variable FS values estimated by other methods. Thus, comparative analyzes were performed using the correlation index "r" accuracy "d" (WILLMOTT et al., 1985) and performance "c" suggested by Camargo & Sentelhas (1997). The methods we have obtained optimum performance for all conditions with the highest levels of trust were Simplified Bishop and Janbu Simplified, and the values obtained by these FS calculated determination coefficients of 99% and 96.59%, respectively, and can be used alternatively, replacing the Spencer s method, in the analysis of slope stability in earth dams.

Blood knot

White, William Nicholas 02 May 2009 (has links)
This collection of original poetry is preceded by a critical introduction that details how Marianne Moore and Elizabeth Bishop’s similar aesthetics in poetry have influenced my own. The following poems focus on themes that challenge the nature of “manhood,” particularly the archetype of Southern masculinity, and highlight characters who struggle to understand themselves, their desires, and their society. The critical essay tracks how Bishop’s personifications, as she grows as a poet and as her narrator’s “drive into the interior” of nature, become harder to define and control and how this loss of control precipitates a jubilant self-awareness—an awareness of the limitations and frailty of language, of poetry, and of human understanding to fully comprehend and capture the vastness of the natural world. Ultimately, this essay points toward and helps articulate my own questions (and struggles) as a poet: How much do I conceal? How much do I confess?

The Eternal Law in Augustine's Early Investigation of Justice

Thomas, Adam Michael January 2016 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Robert C. Bartlett / In my dissertation I seek to contribute to the revival of interest in Augustine’s political thought by attempting to uncover his doctrine of eternal law. While absent from his mature writings, including the City of God, this doctrine is central to the investigation of justice in Augustine’s early writings. After considering Augustine’s summary of this early investigation in the Confessions, the most surprising feature of which is Augustine’s insistence on the importance of specifically political questions to his mature understanding of justice, I take up the two treatments of eternal law. In the dialogue On Free Choice, the eternal law is contrasted with the temporal law and is understood in terms of the fundamental command to “order,” which means in the first place wisdom, but also “right and honorable” action. In the anti-Manichean polemic Contra Faustum, the eternal law is presented as the will of God that commands the preservation of the natural order, which means that actions are truly just insofar as they conduce to “mortal health.” I argue that these two discussions of eternal law indicate the limitations of any kind of “higher law” doctrine. On Free Choice demonstrates the difficulty of breaking free of the guidance of temporal law and its harmonization of the demands of eternal and temporal law depends on an understanding of moral virtue whose independence is rather assumed than proven. Contra Faustum shows that the natural ends of self-preservation, procreation, and civic peace are only the beginning points of moral reasoning, since the pursuit of those ends is governed by further moral criteria that cannot easily be understood in terms of nature. In the end, then, I argue that the doctrine of eternal law, while illuminating a great deal about the problems of politics and morality as Augustine encountered them, points to the crucial importance of the question of human virtue and of acquiring the prudence that provides for this virtue in light of the necessary limitations of political life. It is probably for this reason that Augustine does not return to the doctrine in his later writings and does not rely on it in his reconciliation of the two cities in the City of God. / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2016. / Submitted to: Boston College.
