Göra kön på bloggen : En studie om framställningar och skapandet av ”kvinnan” på mode- och livsstilsbloggar / Doing Gender on the blog : A study of representations and the creation of ”the woman” in fashion and lifestyle blogsAndersson, Dennis January 2014 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to investigate how the “woman” is depicted and created on fashion and lifestyle blogs. I have done this from a “doing gender” perspective. I have also used Goffman’s theories of identity values and stigma. I been working with an eclectic approach to the choice of method and I have therefore been using different methods in which content coding on text and symbolic interpretation of images has been the most prominent. These codes were created based on my theoretical framework. The result of my analysis is that gender is done on fashion and lifestyle blogs relative to the two categories, sex categorization as well as gender. This doing appears in different forms in which the body´s appearance, its decoration and individuals´ behavior and opinions are of central importance. Identity values and stigma are two phenomena that are manifest on this kind of blogs. These two phenomena occur in relation to both sex categorization and gender.

Canadian political blogs: online opinion leaders or opinionated followers?Brown, Curtis 26 March 2010 (has links)
Self-published web diaries called blogs are one manifestation of the Internet’s potential to create new discursive and dialogic spaces for citizens. Blogs are described by their authors and others in the news media (as well as some academic commentators) as a medium that potentially fosters political dialogue in the spirit of Habermas’ conceptual “public sphere.” Blogs also serve as potential competitors to mass media outlets in political debates in two distinct ways: first, by acting as agenda-setters and framers of issues, events and figures and second, by challenging journalistic norms such as the principles of fairness, neutrality and non-partisanship. In spite of these claims, however, very little empirical evidence exists to date on whether political blogs perform the roles of agenda-setters, gatekeepers or framers, or whether they are actually seen as a challenge or potential replacement to mass media outlets by themselves, by journalists or by those who could utilize blogs to transmit messages to the public. This thesis examines these questions as they pertain to Canadian politics, focusing on the interaction between journalists, partisan bloggers and political communications practitioners to assess whether blogs written by explicitly partisan authors actually: 1) create unique discursive spaces for discussion of Canadian political issues, 2) set agendas for political discussion and set issues and 3) serve as an occupational threat/potential replacement to media outlets for disseminating political information. Using surveys and content analysis, this thesis contends that partisan blogs largely mimic political discussion already occurring in media-produced content and are perceived as a potential, though not completely credible, replacement for shaping political agendas and disseminating information.

Up Close and Personal: Latino/a Immigrant Children Making Sense of Immigration and Developing Agency Through Critical Multicultural Literature and Online Discussions in a Third Grade ClassroomAllen, Eliza G 16 May 2014 (has links)
This multiple case study explores the ways in which Latina/a immigrant children make sense of immigration by reading critical multicultural texts and blogging. As U.S. immigration policy shifts have created more punitive policies for immigrant adults, these changes place both documented and undocumented children in difficult situations. With many children born in the U.S. as citizens, these families are identified as "mixed-status" families because of the rights and privileges that immigrant children and parents are afforded or denied (Capps & Fortuny, 2006). What appears to be missing from the research around immigration status and children of immigrants is how literacy, in particular digital literacy or blogging can play a role in the understanding of immigration. Studies have illustrated that critical literacy discussions often help facilitate Latina/a immigrant youth's understandings of the multiple communities and larger social spaces and their identities. Moreover, blogging also gives students an opportunity to express themselves in a way which will make them feel comfortable, which is not always possible in a classroom setting (Bloch, 2011, p. 159). The questions guiding this study are: How does reading critical multicultural texts around immigration issues and discussions in computer-mediated discourse communities help children make meaning of a larger social issue like immigration? and (2) How do children use computer mediated discussions to deepen their understandings of literature?
Three lines of inquiry guided the research: social constructivist learning theories (Gee, 2004; Lave & Wenger, 1991; Vygotsky, 1978), critical literacy theory (Lewison, Flint, & Van Sluys, 2002: Luke, 2012; Luke & Freebody, 2012), and transactional theory (Rosenblatt, 1978, 2005; Smagorinsky, 2001). Participants in the study were third grade Latina/a students. Data sources included students' blog posts, audio recordings of classroom discussions, student writing samples, field notes, and interviews. Constant comparative approach (Glaser & Strauss, 1965) was used to analyze the data. Findings demonstrate that discussions and blogging afforded students a space to deconstruct the complexities surrounding immigration and immigration policies. Students' gained a greater sense of agency when disrupting the status quo and taking action on such issues. The broader implications from this study highlight the need to use varied modalities and formats when working with culturally diverse students and critical multicultural texts.

Previous issue date: 2012 / The aim of our study was to characterize the action of blogging (Miller and Shepherd, 2007) as a constellation of genres (Araújo, 2006), using as criteria the central concept of specific communicative purpose (Swales, 1990, 2004, ASKHAVE AND WALES, 2001 and BHATIA, 1993, 1997, 2001, 2004). For this we draw a theoretical-methodological route that sought first to describe the profile of discursive communities such as bloggers, academics and journalistics which make use of blogs as part of its set of genre. Then we identified the different genres of the constellation of blogs based on the apprehension of their specific communicative purposes. Finally, we analyze how the specific purposes influence on the constitution of gender constellation of blogs. Our basic hypothesis was that if, having as criteria for achieving gender definition of purpose (s) communicative (s) specific (s) taken (s) from using that discourse communities are of a certain gender, therefore, we believe it is possible that the characterization of the different discursive communities that make use of blogs to reach diverse genres appointed as general blog, but because they have specific communicative purposes constitute a constellation formation of distinct genera, however, traversed by common elements what unites them and enables recognition of all by the same common name of blog. In developing our research we have adopted the method of approach, ethnomethodology (Garfinkel, 1967, CICOUREL, 1977, COULON, 1995), already used by Miller (2007), and whereby we seek deduce significant statements of the subjects in their contexts spontaneous interaction, by copying screens of blogs, which would enable us to achieve the objectives of this research. This method of approach was adequate to the apprehension of communicative purposes as well as the understanding of the functioning of discursive communities that use blogs. To analyze the influence of communicative purpose in each gender constellation, we use a quantitative analysis in checking the occurrence of similar characteristics between the samples analyzed. The results demonstrate that the discursive communities analyzed using blogs with their own communicative purposes and those purposes influence in fact the constitution (compositional plan, themes and style) of each of the three identified distinct genres of blogs: personal blogs, journalistic and academic. In our view it is sufficient to characterize them as distinct genera, but united by a similar compositional structure, characterizing the constellation of blogs.

An Activity Theoretical Analysis of Microblogging and Blogging by Spanish L2 Learners in a Bridging Activities FrameworkJanuary 2015 (has links)
abstract: The use of blogging tools in the second language classroom has been investigated from a variety of theoretical and methodological perspectives (Alm, 2009; Armstrong & Retterer, 2008; Dippold, 2009; Ducate & Lomicka, 2008; Elola & Oskoz, 2008; Jauregi & Banados, 2008; Lee, 2009; Petersen, Divitini, & Chabert, 2008; Pinkman, 2005; Raith, 2009; Soares, 2008; Sun, 2009, 2012; Vurdien, 2011; Yang, 2009) and a growing number of studies examine the use of microblogging tools for language learning (Antenos-Conforti, 2009; Borau, Ullrich, Feng, & Shen, 2009; Lomicka & Lord, 2011; Perifanou, 2009). Grounded in Cultural Historical Activity Theory (Engestrom, 1987), the present study explores the outcomes of a semester-long project based on the Bridging Activities framework (Thorne & Reinhardt, 2008) and implemented in an intermediate hybrid Spanish-language course at a large public university in Arizona, in which students used microblogging and blogging tools to collect digital texts, analyze perspectives of the target culture, and participate as part of an online community of language learners with a broader audience of native speakers. The research questions are: (1) What technology is used by the students, with what frequency and for what purposes in both English and Spanish prior to beginning the project?, (2) What are students' values and attitudes toward using Twitter and Blogger as tools for learning Spanish and how do they change over time through their use in the project during the semester course?, and (3) What tensions emerge in the activity systems of the intermediate Spanish-language students throughout the process of using Twitter and Blogger for the project? What are the underlying reasons for the tensions? How are they resolved? The data was collected using pre-, post-, and periodic surveys, which included Likert and open-ended questions, as well as the participants' microblog and blog posts. The quantitative data was analyzed using descriptive statistics and the qualitative data was analyzed to identify emerging themes following the Constant Comparative Method (Glaser & Strauss, 1967). Finally, three participant outliers were selected as case studies for activity theoretical analysis in order to identify tensions and, through their resolution, evidence of expansive learning. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Spanish 2015

History Steps Off the Page: The Past in the Future, A Case Study of How the Mormon Battalion is Making History InteractiveJones, Allyson 01 May 2010 (has links)
This thesis addresses the presentation of the Mormon Battalion's history in three interactive forms. The Battalion served in the U.S.-Mexican War between 1846 and 1847. In 2008 a group known as Battalion Trek chose to rehike the original trail as closely as possible. The three chapters of this thesis address the reenactors who planned and completed the rehike, the blog they kept as they did so, and a program which allows those interested to learn more about the trail. Analyzing what such presentations have to offer is important as history moves into the hands of the public and as the world moves deeper into the technological realm.
