Hip Hop, Bluegrass, Banjos, and Solidarity: Race and Class Histories in Appalachia U.S.A

This dissertation examines the historical race and class tensions across the United States, and particularly focuses on Appalachia as a potential place of resistance against racial and class injustice. Arguing for a thick cross-racial solidarity movement, I examine the history of Black oppression from slavery to current modes of oppression such as mass incarceration and colorblind constitutionalism. The presence of anti-Black racism and under acknowledgement of whiteness hinders any form of cross-racial solidarity. To combat this, I ask, are the genres of hip hop, bluegrass, and country able to provide a reckoning of the continual racial oppression of Black people and an acknowledgement of whiteness, in Appalachia and the U.S.? I examine the historical progression of bluegrass and country, and hip hop, through the history of the banjo and music industry. The banjo, an African instrument, links Appalachia with histories of both Black expression and racial oppression. From here, I argue that the history of the music industry provides a further understanding of racial injustice that is parallel to the instances of institutional racial injustice in the U.S. This history provides evidence that Black artists used their music to enable social movements and resistance against systemic racial injustice in the U.S. Throughout several chapters, I analyze the many untold, forgotten, and hidden histories of Black racial violence that exists in the U.S. and Appalachia, and how music operates as a tool of resistance that can enable Black liberation against racial injustice. Through an examination of racial injustice in my hometown of Martinsville, Virginia, and using music as a tool, I suggest that, a thick cross-racial solidarity can exist with a recognition of historical racial injustice against Blacks, both locally and nationally, an acknowledgment of whiteness, an anti-racist framework for community activism, and a centering of Black voice, narrative, and Black liberation. / Doctor of Philosophy / This dissertation examines the historical race and class tensions across the United States, and particularly focuses on Appalachia as a potential place of resistance against racial and class injustice. Recreating and Deconstructing the Shifting Politics of (Bluegrass) Festivals

Utilizing archival research from Berea College's Appalachian Sound Archives and Appalachian State University's Belk Special Collection, more than 45 survey results, 15 extensive interviews, and participant observations from 15 festival field sites, I examine bluegrass festivals as sites of identity production through feminist methodologies and a participatory ethnographic approach. This requires careful analysis of the nature of the genre's audience and audience members' investments in the process of framing the performance of bluegrass music's history through a shared historical narrative. More broadly, this analysis clarifies the nuanced role of bluegrass festivals in constructing generalizations about place-based identities, race, and gender within the performative space of festivals. In this assessment, the political and economic actions generated as a result of bluegrass performances are explored as temporal and spatial organizers for the (re)production and consumption of generalized ideals which are projected onto both literal and figurative southern stages. I perform this research utilizing the conceptual frameworks of theories of space and place, politics of culture, and feminist methods, combined through critical regionalism. My hypothesis is that bluegrass festivals serve as spaces to perform white patriarchal capitalist desires while relying on marginalized and hidden cultural productions and exchanges. My findings reveal that in order to gain a fuller understanding of politics culture, the stage must be subverted and the researcher's gaze must go beyond that which is typically traditionally framed to encompass the festival in its entirety. This requires seeking out not merely that which is intentionally framed but also narratives that create the stage or are omitted by dominant ways of interpreting the festival space. Ultimately, I find the significance of temporary physical sites for identity construction and the potential for dynamic social change within these spaces relies on the ability of scholars and participants alike to re-historicize and retell dominant narratives. / Ph. D. / The fantasized rural Appalachian region and greater south—a social construct, constantly created and recreated by social desires, political needs, and economic trends—has been a space of cultural production and experimentation, notably since the reconstruction era. One result has been the stereotypically regional genre of bluegrass music. This project asks how bluegrass music festivals began, for whom, and to what end. More importantly, it turns an eye towards research methods and power structures within the community. Research was conducted at Berea College’s Appalachian Sound Archives, at Appalachian State University’s Belk Special Collection, and through online surveys, participant observations, and interviews. In this dissertation, I carefully examine the role(s) of bluegrass festivals, specifically those envisioned and enacted by Carlton Haney (notably, in Fincastle, Virginia, in 1965). My findings illuminate how bluegrass festivals serve as sites where widely accepted generalizations about place (specifically, Appalachia and the rural American south) and specifically the bluegrass community are formed. Further, I address the role of gender within these spaces and the symbiotic relationship between female labor and bluegrass. The history of bluegrass festivals is approached with the intention of broadening discussions of gender, labor, and historical narratives beyond the festival grounds.

Carbon, nitrogen, and water fluxes from turfgrass ecosystems

Bremer / Turfgrass covers 1.9% of the nation’s surface area and is the largest irrigated crop in the USA. Developed urbanized land is projected to double by 2025, which will increase turf’s environmental impact. Studies were conducted to evaluate environmental impacts by characterizing nitrogen, carbon, and water fluxes in turfgrass ecosystems. Emissions of nitrous oxide (N[subscript]2O), a major greenhouse gas and ozone depleter were measured from bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon L. Pers. x C. transvaalensis Burtt-Davy) (bermuda), perennial ryegrass, (Lolium perenne L.) (rye), and zoysiagrass, (Zoysia japonica Steud.) (zoysia) under regional N management. In a separate study, N2O fluxes were measured from bermuda fertilized with controlled-release N fertilizers including polymer-coated and organic-N, and quick release urea. Emissions of N2O were measured using static surface chambers and gas chromatography. Zoysia, with less N requirements, had lower emissions than bermuda. Cumulative N[subscript]2O emissions were similar among N types. To measure water and carbon fluxes, a portable non-steady state chamber was designed and tested. The chamber had minimal affects to the canopy during field measurements: leak values averaged <1.5 micromol CO[subscript]2 m[superscript]-2 s[superscript]-1; average chamber pressure was 0.09 Pa ±0.01 Pa; temperature rise inside the chamber averaged 0.74C; and the chamber had 90% photosynthetically active radiation transmittance. Using the chamber, differences were detected in net photosynthesis (Pnet), gross photosynthesis (Pg), evapotranspiration (ET), canopy stomatal conductance (gc), and water use efficiency (WUE) in well-watered tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.), Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) (KBG), zoysia, and bermuda. Irrigation requirements, visual quality ratings, and genetic rooting potential of 28 KBG cultivars and 2 Texas bluegrass hybrids (P. pratensis x P. arachnifera Torr.) were quantified in greenhouse and rainout facility studies. Average water applied ranged from 23.4 to 40.0 cm among cultivars. Bedazzled, Preakness, and Bartitia required less water and had higher average quality than other cultivars. Compact America and Mid-Atlantic phenotypes exhibited greatest potential for success in integrating reduced water inputs with maintenance of acceptable visual quality. Results indicated that turfgrass management could mitigate N[subscript]2O emissions and conserve water while maintaining healthy turfgrass, and the new chamber will enhance turfgrass studies by providing rapid measurements of photosynthesis.

Response of plant roots and pastureland soils to increasing CO2 concentration

In an attempt to investigate the cause of change in the competitive ability between monocots and dicots in a pastureland in Farnham, Quebec under CO2 enrichment, I chose to study the response of Plantago major (dicot) and Poa pratensis (monocot) grown in ambient and elevated CO2 chambers, hypothesizing that a large increase in root biomass of dicots would be observed under elevated CO 2. A transient stimulation of root biomass of Plantago major was found during the first month of CO2 exposure but disappeared later. / The second objective of this study was to examine the effect of 5 years of CO2 enrichment both on root biomass and on total C and N content of roots and soil in the pasture. The largest belowground growth was recorded for Taraxacum officinale. Plantago major responded by achieving the highest aboveground growth. / N content of CO2 enriched roots was reduced. This change in the elemental composition of root tissues might negatively affect the process of decomposition and therefore, the nutrient availability to soil microbes and plants. The observed reduction of NO3 in CO2 enriched soil maybe due to greater N immobilization caused by the expected increase in microbial populations.

Polymer Coated Urea in Kentucky Bluegrass

Nitrogen (N) is the most commonly over-applied nutrient in urban environments because of the large visual and growth increases. This over-application has led to an increase in the loss of N gas in the forms of ammonia and nitrous oxide, as well as an increase in nitrate leaching to surface and groundwater. Furthermore, excess N results in increased maintenance costs and landfill volume due to increased shoot growth from mowed clipping removal. Polymer coated urea (PCU) has proven to be an excellent source to these losses of N to the environment, but rate and timing parameters need study. A two-year field study, on sand and sandy loam soils in Provo, UT, was initiated in April 2014. Seven fertilized treatments included: urea split applied monthly; a single application of PCU (Agrium One Ap) applied in spring, a single PCU application in fall; two evenly split applications in spring and late summer; and three evenly split applications in spring, late summer, and late fall. These were compared to an untreated control. In addition the two application of PCU also had reduced rates of half and three-quarters, in addition to the full rate. Height and verdure measurements were taken on a weekly basis, along with periodic visual and biomass readings. All fertilized treatments resulted in a significant response to N as compared to the control. The single annual application treatments had significantly greater shoot growth during the weeks immediately after application and a significant reduction in verdure months later and, therefore, were unacceptable for consumer recommendation. Two applications of PCU, either at the three-quarter or full rates, were nearly identical in all measurements as compared to the spoon feeding of urea applied monthly. The half rate of two applications showed signs of inadequate N. Three applications of PCU was identical to two and, therefore, not recommended. This study shows two applications of PCU at the three-quarter rate is equally effective as spoon feeding the N. Doing so would result in less labor for fertilization. Further work is needed to evaluate other timing approaches for a single annual application, as well as long term effects of a reduced rate of N.

<p>  </p> <p>Annual bluegrass (<em>Poa annua</em> L.) is the most troublesome weed in turfgrass systems and the second most troublesome weed across all grass crops. Controlling annual bluegrass is exceptionally complicated due to its high genetic adaptability to new environments. Additionally, prolific seed production allowed the rapid development of herbicide resistance to 12 herbicide modes of action. Experiments were initiated with the goal to better understand annual bluegrass ecology and resistance to ethofumesate. A dose-response experiment was initiated in 2022 to determine the potential level of ethofumesate resistance in annual bluegrass collected from seed production systems. Seed from 55 annual bluegrass populations was obtained from three sources: seed production fields (31 populations), seed cleaning process (6 populations), and seed testing prior to retail distribution (18 populations). </p> <p>Individual seedlings (2–3 tillers) were treated with ten doses of ethofumesate: 0, 0.6, 1.1, 2.8, 5.6, 8.4, 11.2, 16.8, 22.4, and 44.8 kg ai ha−1; with 1.1 to 2.2 kg ha−1 as the label application rates for perennial ryegrass (<em>Lolium perenne</em> L.). The resistance to susceptible ratio of populations across all sources ranged from 0.48 to 5.48. The most resistant populations from production fields, removed during the seed cleaning process, or found in seed testing lots had ED50 values of 12.1, 13.1, and 9.4 kg ai ha−1, respectively. Further, 68% of the populations found in production fields had ED50 higher than 6 kg ai ha−1, which indicates that annual bluegrass resistance is common in grass seed production. A garden study was initiated in November 2020 to assess the development, reproduction, and survival of ten annual bluegrass populations in Indiana. Annual bluegrass plants were maintained in the absence of turf competition and not subjected to typical turfgrass management practices including irrigation, mowing and fertilization. Data collected in included growth rate, biomass production, ground cover, morphology, flowering time, seed production and morphology, and both winter survival and subsequent summer survival of plants. Principal component analysis indicated that certain populations grouped together based on their development, morphology, stress tolerance, and seed production. Plants from the cooler climates (OR, PA, and IN) were characterized by higher growth rates and biomass compared to southern ecotypes. These three populations survived the longest during the summer, with the PA population averaging the highest ground cover of 276 cm2 on 23 July 2021. Plants from warm climates (AL, FL, NC, SC, TN, TX) had poor summer survival. Additionally, the FL population had the highest winterkill of 68%, followed by TX at 45%. The NJ population was distinct from other populations, and plants had robust aboveground biomass and high seed production. The results indicate that the development, reproduction, and survival of different annual bluegrass biotypes are dependent on the climate of origin. A third experiment was designed to understand patterns of germination and seed longevity in populations from five climates across the U.S. at two depths of burial. Seed was retrieved in 6-month intervals up to 24 months. Seed viability by depth (surface vs. 5-cm deep) of burial differed only 18 months after the initiation of the study. However, seed viability did differ among populations on each date of seed retrieval. Viability was low ranging from 0.21 to 0.91%, and populations originating from cool climates (New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Oregon) generally had higher viability than populations originating from warmer climates. Annual bluegrass seed tested in this study typically had low levels of survival (<0.5%); however, all populations retained some level of viability 24 months after burial, which would allow future reproduction of this troublesome weed. Overall, this research determined that herbicides alone will likely be ineffective at controlling annual bluegrass and that knowledge of the development, reproduction, and survival of local annual bluegrass populations should be factored into an integrated weed management strategies created for each site. </p> <p>  </p>
