Análise experimental dos efeitos do fluido e da orientação do escoamento no desempenho de dissipadores de calor baseados na ebulição convectiva em microcanais / Experimental evaluation of the effect of the fluid and the footprint orientation on the performance of a heat spreader based on flow boiling inside micro-scale channels

Hugo Leonardo Souza Lara Leão 06 February 2014 (has links)
This study presents an experimental investigation on the effect of the fluid and the footprint orientation on the performance of a heat spreader based on flow boiling inside micro-scale channels. This heat spreader is used in an electronics cooling application with high-power density. Initially an extensive investigation of the literature concerning single-phase and two-phase flow inside a single microchannels and multi-microchannels was performed. In this literature review the leading predictive methods for heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop are described. The experimental study was carried out in the apparatus developed by Do Nascimento (2012). The heat sink evaluated in the present study is comprised of fifty parallel rectangular microchannels with cross-sectional dimensions of 100 µm width and of 500 µm depth, and total length of 15 mm. The fins between consecutive microchannels are 200 µm thick. Experimental tests were performed for R245fa, low-pressure fluid used in low pressure refrigeration cycles, and R407C, high-pressure fluid used for heat comfort, saturation temperature of 25 and 31°C, mass velocities from 400 to 1500 kg/m² s, degrees of subcooling of the liquid of 5, 10 and 15°C, outlet vapor quality up to 0.38, heat fluxes up to 350 kW/m², and for the following footprint heat sink orientations: horizontal, vertical with the microchannels aligned horizontally and vertical with upward flow. The results were parametrically analyzed and compared again the predictive methods from literature. Average heat transfer coefficients up to 35 kW/m² °C were obtained. The results for R134a from Do Nascimento (2012) for the same heat sink presented heat transfer coefficients higher than R245fa and R407C. The fluid R407C presented oscillation of the temperature due to thermal instability effects with lower frequency and amplitude lower than R134a, and R245fa. None predictive method provided satisfactory heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop predictions of the experimental data. The Homogeneous model with the viscosity given by Cicchitti et al. (1960) provided the best pressure drop prediction while the heat transfer coefficient was best predicted by Bertsch et al. (2009) and Liu and Winterton (1991). The horizontal orientation of the footprint provided the highest heat transfer coefficients while the vertical footprint orientation with upward flow the lowest pressure drops. Images of the two-phase flow were obtained with a high-speed camera and analyzed.

Theoretical and experimental study on convective boiling inside tubes containing twisted-tape inserts / Estudo teórico e experimental sobre a ebulição convectiva no interior de tubos com fitas retorcidas

Taye Stephen Mogaji 25 March 2014 (has links)
This research comprises an experimental and theoretical study on convective boiling inside tubes containing twisted-tape inserts. The demand for more compact and efficient thermal systems, in which the heat exchangers plays an important role, has led to the development and use of various heat transfer enhancement techniques. Among them twisted-tape insert as a swirl flow device is one of the most used. Twisted-tape inserts have been used for over more than one century ago as a technique of heat transfer enhancement applied to heat exchangers. However, the heat transfer augmentation comes together with pressure drop increment, impacting the pumping power and, consequently, the system efficiency. Moreover, until now it is not clear, the operational conditions under which the heat transfer coefficient augmentation by the use of twisted-tape inserts overcomes pressure drop penalty. In the present study, initially, extensive investigations of the literature concerning convective boiling inside plain tubes with and without twisted-tape inserts were performed. This literature review covers pressure drop, heat transfer coefficient and the leading frictional pressure drop gradient and heat transfer coefficient predictive methods during convective boiling inside tubes with and without twisted-tape inserts. Then, pressure drop and heat transfer coefficient results acquired in the present study were obtained in an experimental apparatus of 12.7 and 15.9 mm ID tubes during flow boiling of R134a for twisted-tape ratios of 3, 4, 9, 14 and tubes without inserts, mass velocities ranging from 75 to 200 kg/m2 s, saturation temperatures of 5 and 15°C and heat fluxes of 5 and 10 kW/m2. The experimental results were parametrically analyzed and compared against the predictive methods from literature. An analysis of the enhancement of the heat transfer coefficient and the pressure drop penalty is presented. Heat transfer coefficient increments up to 45% keeping the same pumping power and pressure drop penalty of about 35% were obtained by using twisted-tape relative to tubes without inserts. Additionally, through comparison of the present study experimental results with the predictive methods from the literature for heat transfer coefficient during two-phase flow inside tube containing twisted-tape inserts, it was verified that non of these methods predict satisfactory well the experimental results. However, a new method was develop for predicting the heat transfer coefficient during flow boiling inside tubes containing twisted-tape inserts based on the experimental results obtained in the present study. The predictive method takes into account the physical picture of the swirl flow phenomenon by including swirl flow effects promoted by the twisted-tape inserts. The proposed method predicts satisfactorily well the data obtained in the present study, predicting 89.1% of the experimental data within an error band of ± 30% and absolute mean deviation of 15.7%.

Estudo teórico-experimental da transferência de calor e do fluxo crítico durante a ebulição convectiva no interior de microcanais / A theoretical and experimental study on flow boiling heat transfer and critical heat flux in microchannels

Cristiano Bigonha Tibiriçá 13 July 2011 (has links)
This research comprises an experimental and theoretical study on flow boiling heat transfer and critical heat flux inside small diameter tubes based on data obtained in experimental facilities specially designed for this purpose. A broad literature review was carried out and the main methods to predict the heat transfer coefficient, critical heat flux and flow patterns were pointed out. The experimental results were parametrically analyzed and compared against the predictive methods from literature. For the first time, microchannels experimental results obtained by an unique researcher in distinct laboratories were compared and a reasonable agreement was observed. The importance of such a comparison is high-lighted for flow boiling inside microchannels due to the high discrepancies ob-served when results from independent laboratories obtained under similar experimental conditions are compared. Moreover, the experimental results obtained in the present study were used to develop correlations and models for the heat transfer coefficient and heat flux that takes into account the flow patterns observed in microchannels. The heat transfer coefficient and critical heat flux models were developed based on mechanistic approach. In addition, criteria to characterize macro to microchannel transition were proposed based in the occurrence of the stratified flow pattern and the liquid film symmetry under annular flow conditions.

Um estudo experimental da ebulição convectiva de refrigerantes no interior de tubos lisos e internamente ranhurados / An experimental study of convective flow boiling of refrigerants inside smooth and microfin tubes

Enio Pedone Bandarra Filho 29 April 2002 (has links)
Present research deals with an experimental study of the heat transfer and pressure drop of pure and mixtures of refrigerants undergoing convective boiling inside horizontal smooth and microfin tubes. An experimental apparatus has been developed and constructed whose main component is a horizontal tube electrically heated. Experimental results have been grouped into two mass velocity ranges: the one corresponding to mass velocities lower than 200 kg/s.m2, where the stratified flow pattern is dominant, and that for mass velocities higher than 200 kg/s.m2, where typically the annular flow pattern can be found. Effects over the heat transfer coefficient of physical parameters such as mass velocity, heat flux, diameter, saturation temperature, and refrigerant have been investigated and analyzed. It has been found out that the thermo-hydraulic performance of microfin tubes is better than that of the smooth ones. Empirical correlations have been proposed for both the two-phase flow multiplier and the heat transfer coefficient for different ranges of operating conditions as well as for smooth and microfin tubes. Results from the proposed correlations can be deemed adequate for practical applications given the limited dispersion obtained with respect to their experimental counterpart. Noteworthy are the results obtained from correlations for both the two phase flow multiplier for microfin tubes and the heat transfer coefficient for the lower range of mass velocities in smooth tubes. Finally, worth mentioning is the photographic essay developed in present research involving the flow patterns that occur under convective boiling of refrigerants in horizontal tubes.

Bubble dynamics and boiling heat transfer : a study in the absence and in the presence of electric fields / Dynamique de bulles et transfert thermiques par ébullition : étude en absence et en présence de champs électriques

Siedel, Samuel 13 April 2012 (has links)
Since boiling heat transfer affords a very effective means to transfer heat, it is implemented in numerous technologies and industries ranging from large power generation plants to micro-electronic thermal management. Although having been a subject of research for several decades, an accurate prediction of boiling heat transfer is still challenging due to the complexity of the coupled mechanisms involved. It appears that the boiling heat transfer coefficient is intimately related to bubble dynamics (i.e. bubble nucleation, growth and detachment) as well as factors such as nucleation site density and interaction between neighbouring and successive bubbles. In order to contribute to the understanding of the boiling phenomenon, an experimental investigation of saturated pool boiling from a single or two neighbouring artificial nucleation sites on a polished copper surface has been performed. The bubble growth dynamics has been characterized for different wall superheats and a experimental growth law has been established. The interaction between successive bubbles from the same nucleation site has been studied, showing the bubble shape oscillations that can be caused by these interactions. The forces acting on a growing bubble has been reviewed, and a complete momentum balance has been made for all stages of bubble growth. The curvature along the interface has been measured, and indications concerning the mechanism of bubble detachment have been suggested. The rise of bubble after detachment has been investigated, and the maximum velocity reached before a change of direction has been estimated and compared to existing models from the literature. The interaction between bubbles growing side by side has been studied: the generation and propagation of a wave front during the coalescence of two bubbles has been highlighted. As boiling heat transfer enhancement techniques are being imagined and developed, this study also focuses on the electrohydrodynamic enhancement technique. Boiling experiments have been performed in the presence of electric fields, and their effects on heat transfer and bubble dynamics have been characterized. Although the volume of the bubbles at detachment and the relationship between the bubble frequency and the wall superheat were not affected, the bubble growth curve was modified. The bubbles were elongated in the direction of the electric field, and this elongation was estimated and compared to other studies from the literature. The rising velocity of the bubble was reduced in the presence of electric field, and the behaviour of bubbles growing side by side was modified, the electric field causing the bubbles to repeal each other. These results, obtained in a fully controlled environment, provide compelling evidence that electric fields can be implemented to alter the bubble dynamics and subsequently heat transfer rates during boiling of dielectric fluids.

Modélisation des mécanismes de formation sous ébullition locale des dépôts sur les gaines de combustible des réacteurs à eau sous pression conduisant à des activités volumiques importantes / Modelling of crud growth mechanisms under local boiling conditions in pressurized water reactors fuel clads leading to important volumes activities

Ferrer, Alexandre 10 September 2013 (has links)
The Pressurized Water Reactors (PWRs) primary circuit materials are subject to general corrosion leading to soluble metallic element (mainly Fe, Ni, Cr, Mn, Co) transfer and subsequent ion precipitation processes on the primary circuit surfaces. When deposited on fuel rods, these species are activated by neutron flux. Thus, crud erosion and dissolution processes induce to primary coolant activity. During a normal operating cycle in a EDF PWR, the volume activity in the coolant is relativly stable (usually about 10-20 MBq.m−3 in 58Co). In some cycles (depending on fuel management), significant increases in 58Co and 51Cr volume activities are observed (10 to 100 times the ordinary volume activities). These increases of volume activities are due to local sub-cooled nucleate boiling on the "hot" parts of fuel assemblies. As presented in this thesis, boiling at the top of some fuel assemblies may lead to much higher amount of metallic elements than usual (some micrometers). Indeed, boiling that can locally occurs under PWR conditions concentrates species and to increase significantly the quantity of deposited and precipitated material. Erosion flux is higher in these regions due to thicker crud thickness, involving a greater mass transfer of activated isotopes to the primary coolant. The OSCAR calculation code, developed by the "Laboratoire de Modélisation des interactions et Transferts en Réacteur" in CEA, with these new mass transfer models can now well estimate the amount of deposit and the volume activities in the primary coolant in case of boiling in accordance with french PWR measurements.

Interaction mechanisms for a laser-induced metallic boiling front

Samarjy, Ramiz Saeed Matti January 2017 (has links)
This thesis is about fundamental interaction mechanisms of laser remote fusion cutting, RFC, which is based on the formation of a quasi-stationary laser-induced boiling front that causes drop ejection, preferably downwards. Laser cutting of metals, invented in 1967, has developed from a niche to a well established high quality cutting technique in the manufacturing industry. Usually a gas jet is employed concentric to the laser beam, to eject the molten metal. One technique option, interesting though hardly applied yet because of usually low quality and speed, is remote laser cutting. Two techniques are distinguished, remote ablation cutting, grooving down through a sheet, layer-by-layer, and the here addressed remote fusion cutting, by a single pass through the sheet. For the latter, the ablation pressure from laser-induced boiling at the cutting front continuously accelerates and ejects the melt downwards. Advantages of remote laser cutting, facilitated by high brilliance lasers during the last decade, are the possibility of a larger working distance along with the avoidance of cutting gas and of a gas jet nozzle.   The review paper of the thesis surveys different laser remote cutting techniques, including their modelling, as well as the transition to keyhole welding, owing to similarities particularly from the boiling front and from root spatter ejection. The six Papers I-VI that compose the thesis address fundamental mechanisms of laser remote fusion cutting, theoretically and experimentally. In Paper I a simplified mathematical model of the RFC cutting front enables to estimate the geometrical and energetic conditions of the process. By evidence and post-modelling from high speed imaging, HSI, the simplified smooth cutting front model is developed further to a wavy topology in Paper III, for more sophisticated absorption analysis. As a systematic support, Paper II categorizes and analyses for the first time the different wavy topologies observed at the front, from HSI. The melt dynamics induced by a pulsed laser beam was studied in Paper IV, again from HSI. Apart from other interesting transient melt phenomena it was demonstrated that the ablation pressure can push the melt to a certain pending position during the laser pulse while the melt retreats by surface tension during the pulse break. To engage remote fusion cutting with additive manufacturing, Paper V introduces a novel technique where the drops ejected from RFC are transferred to a substrate, about a centimetre underneath, on which a continuous track forms. This technique can even be applied as an efficient recycling approach. In Paper VI a variant of the technique is presented, to develop a boiling front along the edge of a metal sheet from which the drop transfer takes place, in a different manner. This enables to systematically machine-off the entire sheet, which can be converted to a new shape and product.   Summarizing, the thesis provides a variety of analysis of fundamental mechanisms of a laser-induced boiling front that bear a certain simplicity and in turn controllability, of interest for established as well as for new applications, in manufacturing and in other sectors, including remote fusion cutting.

Ohlsson, Daniel January 2017 (has links)
In the process of a boiling water reactor, high-levels of waste and radiation occur, where almost all the dose per person of the radiation in Forsmark are due to the radioactive iso-tope cobalt-60. The reason is that the stable isotope cobalt-59 is converted to the radioac-tive isotope cobalt-60 due to neutron irradiation in the reactor. Since 2012, unusually high levels of cobalt-60 have been observed at Forsmark 2 which occurs from the material Stel-lite and is a very common sealant in valves. The major disadvantage of the material Stellite in nuclear power is the high concentration of cobalt-59. When grinding alloy surfaces con-taining Stellite, cobalt-59 is released in the form of abrasive dust if the effectiveness of sub-sequent Stellite alloys is poor. The consequences lead to increased radiation levels, which implies major financial costs and a difficult work environment in, for example, mainte-nance work.Today, there is no mapping of valves containing Stellite, which may result in the decon-tamination of Stellite not being requested and missing when a maintenance action in the form of, for example, grinding is performed. The completed mapping of valves containing Stellite is thus the first that has been carried out within Forsmarks Kraftgrupp AB for the priority systems 313, 321, 331 and 415.In this work, valves containing Stellite have been mapped along main lines in systems that come into contact with reactor water without passing ion exchange filters. Furthermore, the effects of how the grinding of valves alloy surfaces in the seat / cone affects the feeding of cobalt-59 into the reactor and the effectiveness of subsequent decontamination of Stel-lite after grinding was investigated. The work has been divided into two main moments; Status analysis and Mapping, which in turn is divided into several sub-moments. The status analysis gathered the information re-quired to perform the mapping. With the gathered information from the status analysis, mapping was then carried out and valves were inventoried in the priority systems.A total of 45 valves containing Stellite were found whose water flow is likely to end up in the reactor without passing ion exchange filters. A total of 13 valves containing Stellite were found, which are not detected by the chemical departments measurement points and whose waterflow did not pass ion exchange filters before the reactor for systems 321 and 331.During a decontamination of Stellite in a valve, only alloy surfaces in the valves are con-trolled and cleaned, which results in dust from grinding remaining in the other surfaces of the valve as well as in the pipe ends when the valve has been assembled prior to commis-sioning. Of the 45 valves containing Stellite which have been inventoried, grinding in theseat/cone have occurred in eight of the valves, but only two of the valves have been de-contaminated since 2010-01-01. Since no decontamination of Stellite has occured six of eight times after grinding, and only alloy surfaces are checked as well as decontaminated, the effectiveness of subsequent decontamination of Stellite after grinding is very low.Based on the results of the work, a number of improvement proposals have been present-ed for continued work to reduce the feeding of cobalt 59 to the reactor water and eventu-ally reduce the radiation levels at Forsmark's nuclear power plant.

Contribution au développement d'une Approche Prédictive Locale de la crise d'ébullition / Contribution to the development of a Local Predictive Approach of the boiling crisis

Montout, Michaël 21 January 2009 (has links)
EDF aims at developing a "Local Predictive Approach" of the boiling crisis for PWR core configurations, i.e. an approach resulting in (empirical) critical heat flux predictors based on local parameters provided by NEPTUNE_CFD code (for boiling bubbly flows, only in a first stage). Within this general framework, this PhD work consisted in assess one modelling of NEPTUNE_CFD code selected to simulate boiling bubble flows, then improve it. The latter objective led us to focus on the mechanistic modelling of subcooled nucleate boiling in forced convection. After a literature review, we identified physical improvements to be accounted for, especially with respect to bubble sliding phenomenon along the heated wall. Subsequently, we developed a force balance model in order to provide needed closure laws related to bubble detachment diameter from the nucleation site and lift-off bubble diameter from the wall. A new boiling model including such developments was eventually proposed, and preliminary assessed
