Library services to colleges of education in the former Republic of Bophuthatswana

The purpose of this research was to determine what library facilities, resources and services were available to students and lecturers at colleges of education in the former Republic of Bophuthatswana and to determine how they compare to those available in some colleges of education libraries elsewhere. Also to determine students' and lecturers' use of the facilities, resources and services provided and whether they regard them as adequate. This investigation comprised a survey of the literature and an empirical survey which entailed giving questionnaires to a sample of students and lecturers at colleges of education. It was tound that students and lecturers use the libraries, but that facilities, equipment and collections are inadequate in many respects which contributes to the fact that most of the students and lecturers deemed the services offered by library staff to be inadequate. Photovoltaics for educational television in rural schools

One application for photovoltaic (PV) technology is in providing electricity for educational aids, in developing areas remote from grid supply. Technical, social and economic aspects of this option are investigated, in local context, by examining the use of small PV systems to power educational television and video in secondary schools in Bophuthatswana. Technical performance was assessed through monitoring PV system behaviour and climatic variables over an extended period, using remote data-capture techniques at a demonstration site. Modelling provided for further prediction of performance in nonobserved conditions. Social and educational aspects of the schools television project were investigated through interviews with educationists, planners, project administrators and a limited sample of teachers and pupils in Bophuthatswana. Overall conclusions are that PV systems can provide a reliable and technically appropriate solution to the problem of powering light electrical loads in off-grid schools. Levelised unit energy costs can be acceptable if PV systems are critically sized, and if there is close match between designed capacity and actual load energy demand. If this is not the case - as in Bophuthatswana school systems - unit energy costs may be very high. Organisational features of project implementation and inadequate central resources, particularly for delivering appropriate educational software to schools, have impaired the potential of the project, and the equipment in schools is under-utilised. Proceeding from an inductive performance analysis of the monitored system, a PV system performance model was developed, in order to assess the optimum sizing of components in small stand-alone photovoltaic systems in such applications, and to judge the sizing of the systems installed. The model is based upon critical runs of adverse weather, leading to-wards system loss of power to load. It predicts the minimum insolation required to avoid system loss of power to load over runs of days, and compares this with percentiles for plane-of-array insolation over runs of days, derived from long term · hourly weather station records. The approach allows development of a loss of power probability (LOPP) sizing methodology which preserves the run-length characteristics of local climatic data. Sizing predictions from this method are compared with other sizing methodologies, and are used to indicate design savings possible for the monitored systems. The proposed critical-run LOPP sizing method has potential for incorporation in a microcomputer-based sizing tool, suitable for more accurate design of photovoltaic systems with battery storage in local applications.

Success and failure in mathematics among standard seven students in the Bafokeng Region of Bophuthatswana.

A Thesis submitted to the Faculty of Education, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy / This researcn investigates success and failure in mathematics at the standard seven level in middle schools in the Bafokeng region. There is great concern expressed by parents, teachers and students about the high failure rate in this subject in the external examinations. Mathematics is seen to be important for securing good jobs in the platinum mines which are situated on the Bafokeng tribal lands. in general, greater efforts by teachers and students have made little impact on the public examination results. The present study undertakes ar xn-de th analysis of this problem in the anthropolog^/cal paradigm using the illuminatxve approach. Interviews and questionnaires are used for gathering data and triangulation techniques are used for verification and checking. Statistical correlation is applied to the variables but the study is not limited to numerical relationships between factors associated with scholastic success and failure. Two separate criteria of "success" are defined, namely the standard 7 mathematics mark and the performance of a ten per cent sample in each of five picture problems. The population xs composed of one educational unit: the one high school in Phokeng, capital of the Bafokeng, and the three middle schools which make up the catchment area of this high school. The number of students involved is approximately three thousand. Language and attitudes show strong positive correlations with both criteria of success. Other variables, like socio-economic status and degree of westernization are significantly related to the picture problem scores but not to the mathematics mark. Surprisingly, self-concept and embedded figures scores show no statistically significant relationship with either of the two criteria of success. In order to succeed in school mathematics a student must attain a high level of abstraction. This research does not suggest that the case is any different for Bafokeng students, buJj it attempts to explore the modes of perception, methods of concept formation and the development of appropriate schemata by which abstraction is achieved. Finally the Implications for teaching and learning of mathematics in school are discussed in the light of the findings of this research. An evaluation of the interdisciplinary nature of environmental education in colleges of education in Bophuthatswana

This study was aimed at evaluating the interdisciplinary nature of environmental education within the colleges of education in Bophuthatswana. Data collection was based on semi-structured interviews with college lecturers and, to a lesser extent, on observations during a workshop with environmental educators from Bophuthatswana. Knowledge was gained about college related factors which influence the varying extent to which environmental education is being implemented within the colleges of education. Lecturers' understanding of the interdisciplinary nature of environmental education and related concepts was explored. Insights were also gained into problems of implementation which included lecturers' limited understanding of the concept of interdisciplinarity, structural ambiguities, limited training and experience, and a lack of clarity in both local and international literature on environmental education concepts and terms. Specifically the study sought to illuminate the dichotomy between theory and practice, the conflict between the dominant curriculum paradigm and the new emerging paradigm, and tensions between the interdisciplinary nature of environmental education and subject-based disciplines, which lead to problems of implementation. The study could make an important contribution to the current curriculum debate on environmental education in South Africa by illuminating the dichotomy between the theory and the practice of environmental education, and the problems involved in translating interdisciplinary approaches into workable classroom practices within discipline based curriculum structures.

Environmental education in primary schools in Bophuthatswana : a case study in curriculum implementation

This study examines the extent to which teachers in Senior Primary Schools who have obtained a professional qualification in Environmental Education, implement Environmental Education in their schools. It also explores factors which influence the implementation of Environmental Education at the Senior Primary School. Teachers who had qualified from Tlhabane and Hebron Colleges of Education were interviewed as were the principals of their schools and some of the lecturers who had taught them Environmental Education. The implementation of Environmental Education was addressed by means of comparing the teacher's responses with Primary Environmental Education Teacher Competencies as suggested by Glasgow and Robinson (1986) and Lahiry et al (1988). The information was deduced from the teachers responses from semi-structured interviews and were qualitatively analysed.

Although earlier judgments of the courts were promising and augured well for the future protection of human rights later judgments have reverted to the positivistic approach to constitutional interpretation. This led to the bill of rights being rendered inoperative. However, in the latest and most recent judgements there was a return to the bold and innovative interpretation of the first decisions. The legislative and executive branches of state was autocratic to the core as experienced elsewhere in Africa. The constitutional future of South Africa is evaluated against this background. / Law / LL.M.

A case study of the group work management techniques of an English second language teacher in the Molopo circuit of Bophuthatswana

This study examines the small group work management techniques of a teacher of English in a second language classroom in Bophuthatswana. The school at which the observation takes place, is a black secondary school in Mmabatho which follows the Department of Education and Training (DET) syllabus and writes the DET external matriculation examination. The goal of the research is to assess and evaluate the methods the teacher uses in managing group work according to five specified areas. These areas are noted for their importance in the successful management of group work. The report on the findings of this research reveals that the teacher's understanding of the nature of small group work differs from the accepted characteristics of successful group work management as interpreted by authorities in this field. This gives rise to management techniques that are sometimes inappropriate and ill-considered. Although this study observes only one teacher, the findings indicate the need for more classroom-based research in order to establish the true nature of classroom practice. Assumptions about classroom practice are too readily made by innovators, syllabus designers and textbook writers who design materials based on methodologies which can be complex and difficult to implement. These methodologies require understanding and commitment from the teacher. However, the pre-service and in-service education and development that the teacher receives often does not guarantee understanding of the processes involved nor does it generate the necessary commitment to small group work as an effective teaching technique.

Church and state relations: the story of Bophuthatswana and its independence from 1977 to 1994

The thesis is about the relationship between State and Church, taking note of alternative relations which existed over the ages. The government of Bophuthatswana declared their state to be Christian. The main emphasis was that the Batswana were religious people who were deeply Christian and thus the state was to become Christian as well. This was not separated from the issue of land which also was seen as a gift from God for them. Winterveld was used as a case study to show how the state was justifying its own actions to discriminate against non-Batswana from obtaining citizenship and denying them access to land. The transition period showed that the church stood on the other side of the fence when it supported changes that were sweeping South Africa and calling for the end of states such as Bophuthatswana.
