FORMATION OF THE BOTTOM-SIMULATING REFLECTOR AND ITS LINK TO VERTICAL FLUID FLOW

Many places where natural gas hydrate occurs have a regionally extensive, bottom-simulating seismic reflector (BSR) at the base of the gas hydrate stability zone (GHSZ). This reflection marks the top of an underlying free-gas zone (FGZ). Usually, hydrate recycling (that produces gas as the stability field moves upward relative to sediments) is invoked to explain the presence and properties of the sub-BSR FGZ. However, this explanation is not always adequate: FGZs are often thicker in passive-margin environments where hydrate recycling is relatively slow, than in convergent-margin environments where hydrate recycling is relatively fast (e.g. Blake Ridge compared with Cascadia). Furthermore, some areas with thick FGZs and extensive BSRs (e.g. west Svalbard) have similar rates of hydrate recycling to northern Gulf or Mexico, yet the latter has no regional BSR. Here we discuss a gas-forming mechanism that operates in addition to hydrate recycling, and which produces a widespread, regional, BSR when gas is transported upward through the liquid phase; this mechanism is dominant in tectonically passive margins. If the gas-water solubility decreases downward beneath the GHSZ (this occurs where the geothermal gradient and the pressure are relatively high), low rates of upward fluid flow enable pore water to become saturated in a thick layer beneath the GHSZ. The FGZ that this produces achieves a steady-state thickness that is primarily sensitive to the rate of upward fluid flow. Consequently, geophysical observations that constrain the thickness of sub-BSR FGZs can be used to estimate the regional, diffuse, upward fluid flux through natural gas-hydrate systems.

3-D TRAVEL TIME TOMOGRAPHY INVERSION FOR GAS HYDRATE DISTRIBUTION FROM OCEAN BOTTOM SEISMOMETER DATA

This paper presents results of a seismic tomography experiment carried out at the Bullseye cold vent site offshore Vancouver Island. In the experiment, a seismic air gun survey was recorded on an array of five ocean bottom seismometers (OBS) deployed around the vent. The locations of the shots and the OBSs were determined to high accuracy by an inversion based on the shot travel times. A three-dimensional tomographic inversion was then carried out to determine the velocity structure around the vent, using the localized source and receiver positions. The inversion indicates a relatively uniform velocity field around and inside the vent. The velocities are close to the values expected for sediments containing no hydrate, which supports previous claims that the bulk concentrations of gas hydrates are low at the site. However, the largest resolved velocity anomalies of + 25 m/s are spatially within the limits of the acoustic blank zone seen in multichannel seismic data near the Bullseye vent. The velocity inversion is consistent with zones of high concentration (15-20 % of the pore space) in the top 50-100 m of sediment.

Authentic identity : the essence of how successful ecopreneurs communicate

This thesis employed qualitative methods including grounded theory to assess how successful ecopreneurs communicate to maintain and sustain their triple bottom line organizations. The analysis of transcribed interviews from 13 exemplars in North America revealed five groups of common attributes that form an overarching theme of authentic identity. This finding confirms the Communication Theory of Identity and furthers it because it is through authentic identity that successful ecopreneurs manage to narrow identity gaps across the four layers of identity: they continuously strive for alignment with themselves, in relationships, among and across stakeholder groups, and in their daily execution. Understanding ecopreneurs and their practices, distilling recommendations, and adding to the scarce body of academic literature on ecopreneurship, are critical because ecopreneurship, in light of the alarming economic and environmental outlook, is establishing itself as a considerable area of business activity and influence for social change and a sustainable future.

AN EVALUATION OF THE ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION PROVIDED BY COMPOSITE LINER SYSTEMS

The effect of calcium uptake by hydration and diffusion from an adjacent calcium-rich soil on the performance of a geosynthetic clay liner (GCL) is examined for three cases. In Case 1 the GCL rested directly on a soil with a high calcium (1800 mg/l) concentration in the pore water (called “calcium rich soil” herein). Case 2 involved a GCL resting on 300 mm of soil with a low (200 - 300 mg/l) calcium concentration in the pore water (“foundation soil”) overlying the calcium rich soil. In the third (“control case”), the GCL only rested on the foundation soil. The overburden pressure was 15 kPa. The moisture content of GCL increased to 96%, 86% and 108% in the first 279 days for Cases 1, 2 and 3 respectively. Under isothermal conditions, the GCL moisture content decreased to 80% and 67% for Cases 1 and 2 respectively and increased to 113% for Case 3. After 1100 days, the hydraulic conductivity (k) of the GCL was 4×10-11 m/s for Case 3 but had increased up to about 7×10-11 m/s and 2×10-10 m/s for cases with and without the foundation layer respectively. The results are used to calibrate finite element models. A good correlation was found between k the bulk void ratio (eB) of GCL. Leakage and contaminant transport through 10 mm diameter hole in a geomembrane in a composite liner involving a GCL is examined at a stress of 100 kPa for hydraulic heads of 0.3 or 1 m. When permeated with distilled water, the interface transmissivity (θ) was about 2.3 × 10 11 m2/s. After 800 days of permeation with 0.14M NaCl there was only about 3% increase in the flow despite an order of magnitude increase in GCL permeability near the hole because θ decreased from 2.3×10-11 m2/s to 1.1×10-11 m2/s and controlled the leakage despite the increase in GCL permeability. Benthic fluxes of biogenic elements in the Baltic Sea : Influence of oxygen and macrofauna

This thesis investigates how benthic fluxes of phosphorus (P), nitrogen (N), and silicon (Si) change upon oxygenation of anoxic soft bottoms in the brackish, eutrophicated Baltic Sea. Direct measurements in situ by benthic landers demonstrated that fluxes of dissolved inorganic P (DIP) from anoxic bottom sediments in the Eastern Gotland Basin are higher than previously thought (Paper I). It is argued that the benthic DIP flux has a much larger influence on the DIP inventory in the Baltic proper than the external sources. Similarly, benthic fluxes of DIP and dissolved inorganic N (DIN) from anoxic sediment in the coastal Kanholmsfjärden Basin, Stockholm archipelago, were sufficiently high to renew the pools of these nutrients below the upper mixed layer in roughly one year (Paper II). A natural inflow of oxygen rich water into the deep, and previously long-term anoxic part of Kanholmsfjärden Basin, increased the P content in the sediment by 65% and lowered DIP and dissolved silica (DSi) concentrations in the pore water. These changes, as well as the large increases in benthic effluxes of these solutes following de-oxygenation of the bottom water, suggest that they are influenced similarly by changing oxygen conditions. Experimental results in papers III and IV show that common benthic macrofauna species in the Baltic Sea can stimulate benthic release of DIN and DSi, as well as dissolved organic and particulate bound nutrients. Thus, if benthic oxygen conditions would improve in the Baltic, initial effects on benthic–pelagic nutrient coupling will change due to animal colonisation of currently azoic soft bottoms. A new box corer was designed (Paper V) which can be used to obtain highly needed virtually undisturbed samples from soft bottom sediments – if lowered slowly and straight into the bottom strata – as demonstrated by in situ videography and turbidimetry. THE EFFECT OF PRACTICE ON EYE MOVEMENTS IN THE 1/D PARADIGM

Previous studies have demonstrated that observers may ignore highly salient feature singletons during a conjunction search task through focusing the attentional window (Belopolsky, Zwaan, Theeuwes, & Kramer, 2007), or by the suppression of bottom-up information (Treisman & Sato, 1990). In the current study, observers’ eye movements were monitored while performing a search task in which a feature singleton was present and corresponded with the target at a chance level. With practice, observers were less likely to make an initial saccade toward the singleton item, but initial saccades directed at the target were likely throughout. Results demonstrate that, in an effort to ignore the singleton, observers were more likely to suppress bottom-up information than adjust the size of the attentional window.

TEMPERATURE-DEPENDENT TUNABLE PHOTOLUMINESCENCE PROPERTIES OF CARBON NANODOTS DERIVED FROM POLYETHYLENE GLYCOL

Fluorescent carbon dots (C-dots) are well known for their low cell-cytotoxicity, biocompatibility, low preparation cost, excitation dependent photoluminescence, and excellent photostability. Typically, raw C-dots have low quantum efficiency and thus researchers have been utilizing biocompatible polymers such as polyethylene glycol (PEG) as a passivation agent in order to increase fluorescence signal. In this work, we report fluorescent self-passivated carbon nanodots (CNDs) synthesized from PEG by using it as a carbon source as well as a passivating agent. Importantly, the addition of graphene quantum dots (GQDs) during the synthesis of self-passivated CNDs can tune photoluminescence property. The results of bioimaging and cytotoxicity test of self-passivated CNDs hold promises for biomedicine applications.

Area Efficient ADC for Low Frequency Application

Analog to digital converters (ADCs) are the fundamental building blocks in communication systems. The need to design ADCs, which are area and/or power efficient, has been common. Various ADC architectures, constrained by resolution capabilities, can be used for this purpose. The cyclic algorithmic architecture of ADC with moderate number of bits comes out to be probably best choice for the minimum area implementation. In this thesis a cyclic ADC is designed using CMOS 65 nm technology. The ADC high-level model is thoroughly explored and its functional blocks are modelled to attain the best possible performance. In particular, the nonlinearities which affect the cyclic/algorithmic converter are discussed. This ADC has been designed for built-in-self-testing (BiST) on a chip. It is only functional during the testing phase, so power dissipation is not a constraint while designing it. As it is supposed to be integrated as an extra circuitry on a chip, its area really matters. The ADC is designed as 10-bit fully differential switch-capacitor (SC) circuit using 65nm CMOS process with 1.2V power supply. A two stage Operational Transconductance Amplifier (OTA) is used in this design to provide sufficient voltage gain. The first stage is a telescopic OTA whereas the second is a common source amplifier. The bottom plate sampling is used to minimize the charge injection effect which is present in the switches.
