Corporate Social Responsibility, the Triple Bottom Line, Standardization and Brand Management in Houston, Texas

This study examines Corporate Social Responsibility in Sustainable Development and the notion of the Triple Bottom Line as an imperative in today’s socially responsible corporation. Standardization is used as a tool for integrating social and environmental costs and benefits into the financial bottom line of an organization. This research aims to discover what standards or methods are used to measure social and environmental progress in three organizations in Houston, Texas and the implied potential for CSR as a driver for profitability. The primary data included in this research was captured through semi-structured qualitative interviews with upper level management of the three companies included in the final study. The results consistently supported positive correlations between CSR and improvements in company image and stakeholder relations. One participant was also able to report evidence of increased profitability through cost containment as a result of their integration of CSR initiatives throughout their organization.

Sustainable development is one of the most frequently used expressions in the economic context. Its importance is emphasized not only at the national level but also at the corporate level. The purpose of this study is to find the influence of company´s age, size and type of industry on the level of sustainable development among Swedish companies. In order to accurately evaluate the level of sustainable development a comprehensive measurement scale is needed. We have recognized the research gap of lack of sustainability measurement methods. Thus, the second goal we have decided to achieve is to develop an extensive measurement scale for sustainability performance evaluation. The main contribution of the study lies in filling the research gap by providing a new measurement method that can be adopted in order to evaluate the sustainability performance and to find the effects of company age, size and type of industry on the level of CSR. The relationships in the study are hypothesized and summarized in the conceptual model and consequently tested. This study distinguishes five underlying perspectives of sustainability and several categories of company ages, size and types of industry. These aspects are in the focal point of the questionnaire sent to our sample of Swedish companies. The data collected from the survey were analyzed in SPSS statistics program using a variety of analytical methods. At first, each set of questions was analyzed separately. Thereafter, the findings regarding each determinant of CSR were thoroughly discussed. Based on the results from analytical tests a revised conceptual model is proposed. The new features added to the model should enhance its quality and explanatory value. The collected data reveal that the responding Swedish companies engage in the sustainability perspectives in a considerable extent. According to the results of the study there is no or minor effect of company age and type of industry on the level of CSR. Company size, however, is found to be a significant determinant of CSR causing an U-shaped effect. This U-shaped effect of company size implies that the level of CSR activities decreases as a company grows from small to middle-sized but increases from middle-sized to large company.

The Fair Trade Coffee Business Model’s Affect on the Small Scale Producers through the Lens of the Triple Bottom Line

The aim of this study is to understand the Fair Trade Coffee Business Model by determining how the Fair Trade Coffee Business Model affects the livelihoods of the small scale producers in developing countries. The Fair Trade Coffee Business Model is driven by the mission to improve the well-being of the small scale producers located in developing countries through the lens of the Triple Bottom Line (economic, social and environment). What is the significance of fair trade coffee to the economies of developing countries that produce coffee? The economies are considerably impacted by coffee production as coffee ranks as the second foremost exported commodity from developing countries (European Coffee Federation, 2006). Ensuring the small scale producers receive a fair price for the coffee they grow is only one of the initiatives of the model. Other key initiatives include pre-harvest financing, increased healthcare services, working together for a higher quality coffee, fairer business conduct, improvements in education, and technical assistance. The findings of this study provide some insights into the Fair Trade Coffee Business Model’s effect on the livelihoods of the small scale producers in developing countries through the lens of the Triple Bottom Line. The Fair Trade Coffee Business Model has increased the quality of the coffee bean produced by the small scale producers along with developing long term business relationships throughout the Fair Trade Coffee Business Model supply chain. In sum, the small scale producers reported that the Fair Trade Coffee Business Model has a positive effect on their livelihood and well-being. More specifically, they also indicated that the motivations for them to participate in the Fair Trade Coffee Business Model are receiving a better price for coffee, democratic decision making and farm training. An additional finding affirms that the Fair Trade Coffee Business Model is a sound contributor to the socio-economic stability of the small scale producers, offering a sustainable income-generating alternative market strategy.

Associating remotely sensed seafloor types with groundfish species in Hecate Strait

Traditional stock assessment methods do not incorporate remotely sensed ecosystem variables such as seafloor type, relief, and complexity. Incorporation of these and other ecosystem variables allows for targeting of species' optimal habitat during surveys. Recently, acoustic remote sensing methods have allowed us to gain insight into groundfish habitat. In June 2002, a geophysical survey was performed in selected fishing areas of Hecate Strait. While underway, single beam acoustic data were collected along survey lines utilizing a 50 kHz echosounder coupled with Quester-Tangent's QTC VIEW 5; a Huntec seismic system, and a dual frequency sidescan sonar system. Surficial sediment distribution and seabed features were mapped through examination of seismic, sidescan, and bottom grab data and compiled into a GIS. The surficial sediment classes were compared to bottom type classifications obtained from QTC single beam, with results showing the Gravel and Sand class from the surficial sediment data being classified best by the single beam system. Catch data from the groundfish bottom trawl fishery for the areas of interest were made available by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO). The distribution of groundfish aggregates and individual fish species were compared to surficial sediment classes using correspondence analysis to investigate habitat associations. Results show that the Rock Sole aggregate had a habitat preference of gravel and sand mixture and the Dover Sole and Arrowtooth Flounder aggregates had a habitat preference of sandy mud. Correspondence analysis allows for a 2-dimensional view of multivariate categorical data which are the norm for habitat-based biological studies. Results suggest that the procedures developed in this work can improve stock assessment methodology and indicate that using various acoustic remote sensing techniques can be effective in characterizing seafloor habitats and ecological connections between groundfish species and seafloor types.

Hydrothermal alteration patterns exposed in the sheeted dike complex at Pito Deep

This thesis documents hydrothermal alteration patterns exposed along major fault scarps at Pito Deep, a tectonic window into the upper ocean crust formed at the very fast-spreading (>140 mm/yr) East Pacific Rise. Two main study areas were examined, each covering at least five lateral kms across the sheeted dike complex, exposing > four km of relief. and revealing >70,000 years of spreading history. Hydrothermal alteration patterns reveal vertical and lateral variation in the degree of alteration, dominant secondary mineral assemblages, peak temperatures of alteration, and metal depletion on the scale of 10s to 100s of meters. Amphibole and chlorite are the most common secondary minerals and replace clinopyroxene, interstitial zones, and plagioclase. Mineral assemblages indicate alteration temperatures of 250-450°C were common throughout most of the sheeted dike complex. Geothermometry indicates a range in alteration temperatures from 902-505°C and 350-60°C for amphibole-plagioclase and chlorite thermometry respectively. The highest temperatures are recorded in both deformed and undeformed dikes indicating that deformation was not always synchronous with peak alteration temperatures.

Onshore/offshore structure of the Northern Cascadia subduction zone from Bayesian receiver function inversion

This study applies Bayesian inversion to receiver functions (RF) to estimate local shear wave velocity (Vs) structure of the crust and upper mantle beneath two ocean bottom seismometers (OBS) offshore, and two land-based seismometers onshore Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. We use passive seismic data recorded on NC89, a permanent NEPTUNE (North-east Pacific Time-series Undersea Networked Experiments) OBS located on the continental slope, and on a temporary autonomous KECK foundation OBS, KEBB, located at the Endeavour segment of the Juan de Fuca Ridge (JdFR). The two land based seismometers (OZB and PGC) are located on Vancouver Island and are part of the Canadian National Seismograph Network (CNSN). The introduction of NEPTUNE has helped to fill a gap in offshore seismic monitoring, however; due to high noise levels and a relatively short deployment time, few useful events have been recorded (to date) for RF analysis. In this study, we utilize three-component, broadband recordings of large (M6+), distant (30 -100 degrees) earthquakes to compute RFs due to locally generated P (compressional) to S (shear) converted waves. RFs are then inverted using a non-linear Bayesian approach which yields optimal profiles of Vs, Vp (compressional wave velocity), and strike and dip angles, as well as rigorous uncertainty estimates for these parameters. Near the JdFR a thin sediment layer (<1 km) is resolved overlying a 2 km thick oceanic crust. The crust contains a large velocity contrast at the depth of an expected axial magma chamber. The oceanic crust thickens to 10 km at the continental slope where it is overlain by 5 km of sediments. At the coastal station (OZB) a low velocity zone is imaged at 16 km depth dipping approximately 12 degrees NE. Evidence for this low velocity zone is also seen beneath southern Vancouver Island (PGC) at a depth consistent with previous studies. Determining such models at a number of locations (from the spreading ridge to the coast) provides new information regarding local structure and can aid in seismic hazard analysis. / Graduate

Quantifying the impact of bottom trawling on soft-bottom megafauna communities using video and scanning-sonar data on the continental slope off Vancouver Island, British Columbia

The purpose of this study was to develop a methodology to analyse ROV video and scanning-sonar data to document the abundance and distribution of epi-benthic megafauna on the continental slope off Vancouver Island and to quantify the impact of trawling on these megafaunal assemblages. Impacts of bottom trawling on deep-sea ecosystems vary depending on habitat types and species present. Environmental factors such as depth, dissolved oxygen concentration, substratum type, and bottom roughness also affect the diversity and composition of benthic communities. We studied two transects (30km and 12km long) on the upper continental slope off Vancouver Island, BC, Canada, that included areas of seafloor with visible trawl marks. Our study area was also located in an oxygen minimum zone with very low bottom water dissolved oxygen concentrations in its core (600m-1000m). The main target for bottom trawling fisheries in this area is the longspine thornyhead (Sebastolobus altivelis). Field data were collected using the ROV ROPOS equipped with a 3CCD video camera and high-resolution scanning sonar. Megafaunal composition/abundance and bottom characteristic information were extracted from video imagery and assembled using a custom-designed MS Access database. The same database was used to compile information on trawl-door marks detected in recorded sonar imagery. The sonar surveyed a 50m radius around the submersible during transects, providing a broader view of evidence of trawling in the area than video. This thesis reports on relationships between environmental variables and faunal abundance, diversity and species distribution. Following the video and sonar analysis, diversity patterns and general species distribution for both transects were determined. Relationships of community structure to depth and trawling intensity were investigated using the hierarchical clusters technique to identify similarities in the megafauna assemblages between stations . Finally, spatial structures in the megafaunal community and their associated environmental variables were examined using the Principal Coordinates Neighbour Matrices (PCNM) and redundancy analysis tests. Differences in total abundance, species composition and distribution, and species diversity were detected between the high and low trawling intensity areas. One of the main highlights of our results was the dominance of ophiuroids and holothurians along most of the transect, except for the highly trawled area. Spatial structures were identified in the megafaunal community, showing a strong influence of bottom trawling intensity and, to a lesser extent, depth. Nearby water column measurements of dissolved oxygen concentrations suggest that depth might be associated with dissolved oxygen levels, but in situ oxygen data were not available during the ROV surveys. A deeper understanding of in situ oxygen levels would help clarify the role of this factor in shaping megafauna assemblages and its interaction with trawling. / Graduate

The relative contribution of top-down and bottom-up information during lexical access

The research reported in this thesis examines the relative contributions of top-down and bottom-up information during lexical access. I evaluate the Cohort Model of lexical access (Marslen-Wilson and Welsh, 1978; Marslen-Wilson and Tyler, 1980; and Marslen-Wilson, 1987) which specifies that the first stage in lexical access is fully autonomous and that during this stage all processing proceeds in terms of analysis of the acoustic-phonetic input. Implicit in this model is the assumption that bottom-up processing is immune to any effects of contextual or top-down information. I examine the extent to which listeners ever rely exclusively on bottom-up information during lexical access and investigate this issue empirically, by measuring effects of context on both the production and the perception of words in various contexts. I test the hypothesis that a word uttered in a constraining context will be acoustically indistinguishable from its competitors by, first, measuring one acoustic parameter (VOT) across constraining and non-constraining contexts and, then, examining the intelligibility of tokens of that parameter taken from the varyingly constraining contexts. The data from these experiments suggest that the realization of VOT is not an aspect of bottom-up information which would create problems for a bottom-up processor in terms of providing ambiguous acoustic-phonetic information. I then investigate whether bottom-up processing during lexical access is immune to effects of context. Following Grosjean (1980) and Tyler (1984), I utilize the Gating Paradigm. Using incongruous contexts, I argue that direct assessment of the contributions made by different information sources during lexical access can be made. By presenting bottom-up information which is inappropriate to the contextual (topdown) information, I evaluate the extent to which one information source is given priority over the other. I vary both the contextual constraints available to the listener and the acoustic clarity of bottom-up information. The observed pattern of listeners' identifications of the words suggested that whilst bottomup information was given priority, top-down information was available and was utilized during lexical access. I present data which support the working structure of the Cohort Model of lexical access. I conclude, however, that the model places disproportionate emphasis on initial bottom-up processing. It appears that top-down information is not prohibited from contributing to processing during the initial stage of lexical access.

Syftet med föreliggande arbete är att undersöka hur lärare i ett urval skolor talar om sitt arbete med den tidiga läs- och skrivundervisningen i årskurs F-3. Undersökningens fokus kommer i huvudsak vara lärares beskrivning av undervisningens utformning samt vilka faktorer och modeller som ligger till grund för deras läs- och skrivundervisning. Utifrån syftet görs en enkätundersökning där lärare yrkesverksamma i årskurs F-3 deltar. Undervisningsmodellerna Bornholmsmodellen, LTG-metoden, Att skriva sig till läsning, Wittingmetoden och Whole language ligger till grund för en del av enkätens frågor. Undervisningsmodellerna presenteras under arbetets forskningsbakgrund och enkätsvaren redovisas under arbetets empiriska del. Avslutningsvis leds arbetet in i en diskussion med utgångspunkt i arbetets syfte, forskningsfrågor och enkätsvar. Undersökningen visar att lärare använder sig av olika modeller i den tidiga läs- och skrivundervisningen. De slutsatser som lyfts fram i diskussionen är betydelsen av att kombinera olika undervisningsmodeller för att tillgodose elevers individuella behov och förutsättningar. Det visar sig även i arbetets undersökning att lärares yrkeserfarenhet är en faktor till hur lärarna väljer att utforma den tidiga läs- och skrivundervisningen.

Exploring Impulsive Activation During Spoken Language Comprehension

A language comprehension mechanism that immediately starts processing language as it is encountered is typically thought of as one that speeds and facilitates spoken language comprehension. However, there exist cases where the earliest parts of a word or phrase encode information that is somewhat at odds with the remainder of the word or phrase in full. Examples of these "potentially misleading" cases include compound words where the initial subpart of the compound belongs to a different syntactic category than the entire compound (e.g., "popcorn", "greyhound"), or noun phrases where the initial element of the phrase signals perceptual properties possessed by the referent of the noun phrase (e.g., some Chinese Cantonese classifier-noun phrases). Using a visual-world methodology, this dissertation explores the kinds of unintended or "impulsive" activation that are triggered when listeners encounter such cases, as well as how syntactic and contextual cues can constraining this impulsive activation. Experiment 1 examines whether hearing compound subparts (e.g., "pop-" in "popcorn") activates conceptual associates across syntactic categories, and Experiment 2 examines whether this activation is moderated by listeners' expectations about the syntactic structure of the sentences they encounter. Experiments 3 and 4 investigate the processing of compounds whose initial subparts correspond to colour terms (e.g., "greyhound"). Experiment 3 explores whether these colour subparts trigger the activation of phrasal-level descriptions of non-target objects in the visual display, and whether this activation is influenced by the presence/absence of motivation to use colour descriptions when naming screen objects. Experiment 4 further explores whether a perceptual mismatch between a target object and the colour term in its name increases this impulsive activation. Finally, Experiment 5 investigates whether listeners use the perceptual information encoded in pre-nominal classifiers in Cantonese Chinese to guide their consideration of referential candidates whose perceptual properties do or do not match the classifier semantics. The findings from this dissertation point to the highly interactive nature of spoken language comprehension, suggesting that the kinds of impulsive activation under current discussion are rampant and automatic, but can also be suppressed to varying degrees by the syntactic, semantic, and contextual cues available to the listener.
