A business model development strategy to expand into the bottom of the pyramid population

Ver Loren van Themaat, Tanye 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MScEng (Industrial Engineering))--University of Stellenbosch, 2011. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The Bottom of the Pyramid (BoP) population are those individuals who live under the poverty line. They often do not have easy access to products and services, because the infrastructure to serve them is not in place and most organisations consider the challenges of the BoP overwhelming and unconquerable. The primary objective of this research is to develop a framework that guides an organisation through the design of a business model, which will allow them to expand into the BoP population Organisations face constant pressure to increase their market share and profits, and improve their performance in the current aggressive environment. To retain their competitiveness they have to look at unconventional and alternative markets. By recognising the BoP as a potential emerging market, organisations can increase their market share or enter new markets, thereby creating benefits for organisations and the BoP alike. The reasons why organisations fail when targeting the BoP market are also identified in this research. These reasons include aspects like organisations making assumptions about the BoP, not understanding the BoP, not knowing how to approach the BoP market and being ignorant in designing a business model tailored for the BoP market. This research addresses the difficulties organisations face when they want to target the BoP by developing a framework that allows an organisation to successfully target the BoP population. This framework also fulfils the secondary objective of this research, which is to adhere to the three goals of Sustainable Development: • Fair treatment of all people: Giving all people, regardless of their level in the economic pyramid, equal access to products and services. This is the foundation for social equity. Including the BoP in economic activity by overcoming the constraints the BoP face; • To not degrade the environment through sustainable design; • Economic growth and development to ensure the organisation makes a profit. Four primary research fields – Sustainable Development, Bottom of the Pyramid literature, Business Models and Blue Ocean Strategy – were investigated and then aspects of these fields were merged to form the Business Model Development Strategy. This framework offers a systematic approach for organisations to first analyse and understand all aspects of the BoP and their environment, and then develop a business model that fulfils the core requirements of the BoP. It was found that if organisations want to successfully target the BoP, they have to fulfil the 4 A’s – Acceptability, Awareness, Availability and Affordability – which are the core needs and requirements of the BoP. Using the Business Model Development Strategy as guideline, organisations can design a business model that minimises the risk of failure when they target the BoP, while maintaining the principles of Sustainable Development.

On Visual Attention in Natural Images

Tavakoli, Fatemeh January 2015 (has links)
By visual attention process biological and machine vision systems are able to select the most relevant regions from a scene. The relevancy process is achieved either by top-down factors, driven by task, or bottom-up factors, the visual saliency, which distinguish a scene region that are different from its surrounding. During the past 20 years numerous research efforts have aimed to model bottom-up visual saliency with many successful applications in computer vision and robotics. In this thesis we have performed a comparison between a state-of-the-art saliency model and subjective test (human eye tracking) using different evaluation methods over three generated dataset of synthetic patterns and natural images. Our results showed that the objective model is partially valid and highly center-biased.By using empirical data obtained from subjective experiments we propose a special function, the Probability of Characteristic Radially Dependency Function, to model the lateral distribution of visual attention process.

Froener, Muriel Scopel January 2016 (has links)
In order to valorise locally available residues, bottom ash (BA) from a thermo-electrical plant was selected as the main material within the project presented here. BA does not have any commercial value and normally it is used to refill old coal mines or it is disposed in extended basins increasing the environmental impact as well as the cost related to its transport. Also there exist convincing interests in the development of non-conventional binders, i.e. alkali-activated cements (geopolimers), which can be a feasible pathway to the valorization of different industrial wastes. When alkali-activated concrete is produced under optimal conditions, it can exhibits similar or even higher mechanical performance and durability when compared to traditional Portland cement concrete. These materials are based on aluminosilicate mineral (precursor) chemically activated by an alkaline solution (activator). Thus, this project is focused in the optimization dosage of bottom ash based geopolymers in pastes and the subsequent mortars production and assessment. Mechanical performance and some permeability properties of the developed geopolyemrs were assessed. The results showed that 15% of Na2O in respect to the bottom ash with 1,0 SiO2/Na2O molar ratio as activator produced more suitable geopolymeric paste. This material was used as a reference system for the development of the proposed project. Also mechanical treatement applied to the BA reduced x% the mean particle size obteining 7 μm and this improved up to ~95% the mechanical performance of the produced geopolymers. The inclusion of Portland cement as a secondary precursor did not have significant effect under the compressive strength when compared to the BA-based systems. Furthermore, the use of other sorces of aluminosilicates, such as aluminium anodizing sludge and spent fluid cracking catalyst, also did not presented any improvement in the analysed geopolimeric systems. BA-based systems activated at 15% of Na2O using an alkali activator solution with a Ms of 1.0 showed the lowest permability and higher mechanical performance.

Measurements of charmless B⁰s meson decays at LHCb

Morris, Adam Benjamin January 2017 (has links)
Using 3 fbˉ1 of proton-proton collisions, collected at centre-of-mass energies of √s = 7 and 8 TeV by the LHCb detector, several measurements of charmless B⁰s meson decays are made. A search is also performed for a highly suppressed B⁰ decay. First, the branching fraction of the B0⁰s→ ØØ decay is measured to be B(B⁰s→ ØØ) = (1.84 ± 0.05(stat) ± 0.07(syst) ± 0.11(fs=fd) ± 0.12(norm))X10ˉ⁵; where the third and fourth uncertainties arise from the fragmentation fraction fs/fd and the branching fraction of the normalisation mode. This represents a factor of five reduction in the statistical uncertainty compared to the previous best measurement. An upper limit on the branching fraction of the mode B⁰→ ØØ is set at B(B⁰→ ØØ) < 2.8 X 10ˉ⁸ (90% CL). This is a factor of seven improvement over the previous best measurement. An amplitude analysis of the B⁰s→ ØK+Kˉ decay is performed, wherein first observations of the decay modes B⁰s→ Øf´2(1525) and B⁰s→ ØØ(1680) are made. The branching fraction of the B⁰s→ Øf´2(1525) decay is measured to be B(B⁰s→ Øf´2 (1525)) = (1.63 ± 0.18(stat) ± 0.12(syst) ± 0.29(model) ± 0.17(norm)) X 10ˉ⁶; where the 'model' uncertainty arises from the choice of amplitude model. The longitudinal polarisation fraction of the decay B⁰s→ Øf´2(1525) is measured to be F0 = (86.6 ± 3.4 ± 0.8 ± 2.0 (model))%.

Savanna woody plant community and trait responses to bottom-up and top-down controls, with a specific focus on the role of mammalian herbivory / Réponses des traits spécifiques et des communautés ligneuses de savane aux processus de contrôle ascendant et descendant (bottom-up/top-down), avec une emphase sur le rôle des mammifères herbivores

Wigley, Benjamin Joseph 09 September 2013 (has links)
[etc] / Savannas are complex ecosystems affected by several bottom-up (e.g. soil nutrient availability and rainfall) and top-down (e.g. fire and herbivory) drivers. However, the relative importance of bottom-up vs. top-down drivers in influencing savanna dynamics is still widely debated. Within the top-down (disturbance) category of drivers, the role of mammal browsers in particular in driving savanna functioning is still not well understood. Two approaches were adopted to determine the role of disturbance in savannas. Firstly, by using a comparative approach, I attempted to address the so-called ‘savanna problem’ by investigating how savanna woody plant community compositions and key plant traits relating to the leaves, stems, architecture, and defence are influenced by soil nutrient status, rainfall, fire and browsing. Sixteen sites were selected along gradients of these four drivers from savanna parks throughout South Africa and Zimbabwe. The dominant woody species (species that accounted for >80% of standing biomass) at each site were identified and sampled for the key leaf and stem traits relating to plant functioning, palatability, architecture, physical and chemical defences. Measurements were undertaken for each species in order to determine both meso-browser and mega browser impact. Transects were undertaken in order to determine the relative abundance and the effects of fire on each species at each site. Due to the current lack of standardized soil sampling protocols in the ecological literature, and uncertainty around the definition of what denotes a fertile or infertile soil, I propose a number of standardized protocols and sampled according to these established protocols in order to accurately determine the soil nutrient status at each site. Following this, the relationships between climatic variables and soil nutrients with both species means and community weighted means for eight key leaf traits were explored. Although some significant relationships were found between savanna leaf traits of woody plants, climate, soil nutrients and their interactions, these tended to be weaker than those found in meta-analyses. These broad-scale studies usually include sites from many biome types, many of which are from temperate regions where inherent levels of disturbance are typically much lower than in African savannas. The high levels of disturbance typically found in African savannas are thought to partially account for the high within site variability found in leaf traits and the weak relationships found between leaf traits, soil nutrients and rainfall. To assess the importance of resources vs. disturbance in savannas functioning, the effects of soil nutrients, rainfall, fire and both meso-browser and mega-browser impact on twenty savanna woody plant traits relating to plant palatability, chemical and structural defences were explored. Structural defences were found to be more strongly correlated with soil characteristics than chemical defences, while browser impact was found to be strongly correlated with structural defences but not with chemical defences. Actual browser utilisation tended to be more predictable for meso-browsers than mega-browsers. Secondly using an experimental approach, two sets of herbivore exclosures were utilized to directly test how mammal browsers influenced woody species distributions, abundance, population structure and plant traits relating to palatability and defence. The effects of three longterm herbivore exclosures in the Kruger National Park on savanna woody plant community compositions, population demographics and densities were determined. Browsers were found to have significant impacts on species distributions, densities and population structures by actively selecting for species with favourable traits, particularly higher leaf N. An interaction between browsers and fire which limited the recruitment of seedlings and saplings into larger size classes was also demonstrated… [etc]

Longhi, Márlon Augusto January 2015 (has links)
Geopolymers are a new class of binder obtained through a chemical reaction between an amorphous aluminosilicate (precursor) and an alkaline activator. This material is a good alternative to the development of more environmental friendly binders, as well as the opportunity to valorize industrial wastes. These materials also show some technical advantages, including high compressive strength at early times of curing, low permeability and higher chemical stability under certain condition of exposure. As precursors, aluminosilicates from industrial wastes such as fly ash (FA), granulated blast furnace slag (GBFS) and/or calcined clays such as metakaolin (MK) are typically used. As activators, the most commonly used are hydroxides and soluble silicates. Therefore, the search of novel aluminosilicates sources from industrial wastes locally available in large volumes could facilitate the adoption of geopolymers by the construction industry. This study assessed the production of different geopolymer binders using as precursors calcined kaolin sludge (CKS) from the Brazilian mining industry and a bottom ash (BA) generated during coal combustion. An alternative alkali activator produced by the dissolution of rice husk ash (RHA) was also evaluated, in order to optimize the environmental benefits of these materials. The precursors were activated individually and also blended using sodium hydroxide, commercial sodium silicate and alternative sodium silicate as activators. The geopolymers were produced based on literature review. The reaction products formed upon alkali activation were evaluated using different characterization techniques, including isothermal calorimetry, X-ray diffractometry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis coupled with mass spectrometry. Complementary, the compressive strength of the geopolymer pastes produced was evaluated up to 90 days of curing. The micro and macro structural characterization results show that these waste are suitable precursors to produce geopolymer binders, with compressive strengths as high as 80 MPa after 7 days of curing. The content of soluble silicates plays an important role in the kinetic of geopolymerization, favoring a high compressive strength development. The use of an alternative alkali activator based it is a feasible alternative to produce more environmental friendly geopolymers with similar mechanical performance to that of geopolymers produced with traditional soluble silicates based on commercial sodium silicate solutions.

Allegretti, Gabriela January 2013 (has links)
The themes sustainable development and sustainability have guided countless discussions and debates in both academic and business circles. This is a direct result of the importance placed on society´s approach to environmental, social and economic issues and, in many cases, evaluations that go beyond these dimensions. The focus of the research has been on the environmental dimension, but an integrated and interrelated analysis of all dimensions is shown to be necessary. The motivation for this research was triggered by the need to create a methodology based on producer´s perception to evaluate finishing pig systems. The methodology needed to be specific to this area, accessible and composed of performance indicators which integrate the three dimensions proposed by Triple Bottom Line. Performance indicators were established encompassing social, environmental and economic dimensions to adapt M.A.I.S. methodology (Method of Evaluation of Organizational Sustainable Indicators) to swine termination in integrated systems of production. The methodology was validated through survey research applied in 2011 to 31 family properties in the rural area of the city of Aratiba, a region with the largest concentration of swine herds in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. As a result of the study, the region was granted the status of “balanced” despite the identification of unbalanced indicators within the three proposed dimensions. In addition to the classification, the method allowed for the visualization of critical points shown inside each dimension and each productive system of the sample properties. The application tool revealed limitations in the construction of some indicators, compromising effectiveness and validation of the method as a whole. However, the undissociated and interrelated analysis of indicators and dimensions allowed for the identification of some critical points that can guide the strategic foundation of public and private actions in order to contribute to the development of the sector.

Development of High performance Concrete Composites Using Class F Fly Ash and PCC Bottom Ash, and a Statistical Model to Predict Compressive Strength of Similar Concrete Composites

Puri, Rajnish 01 December 2015 (has links)
AN ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION OF RAJNISH PURI, for the Doctorate of Philosophy Degree in ENGINEERING SCIENCE WITH CONCENTRATION IN CIVIL AND ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING, presented on APRIL 15, 2015 at Southern Illinois University Carbondale TITLE: DEVELOPMENT OF HIGH PERFORMANCE CONCRETE COMPOSITES USING CLASS F FLY ASH AND PCC BOTTOM ASH, AND A STATISTICAL MODEL TO PREDICT COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH OF SIMILAR CONCRETE COMPOSITES ADVISOR: Dr. Sanjeev Kumar It is a common knowledge that the use of concrete is as old as the evolution of human civilization. People have always dreamed beyond the dotted lines and so does the usage of concrete. With the rapid industrialization and globalization, the journey from ordinary concrete to high performance concrete (HPC) has been swift and remarkable. The diversification and utilization of high performance concrete has given the tool in the hands of engineers and architects who can now design and execute buildings of any shape and size deemed impractical a few decades ago. The aim of this research was to develop high performance concrete composites having different percentages of Illinois Class “F” fly ash and bottom ash by replacing the appropriate proportions of Type 1 portland cement and fine aggregate, respectively. The target was to develop high performance concrete composites that have compressive strength of 8,000 psi (55 Mpa) after 28 days of curing in water with a slump of 4±½” (102mm ± 13mm) and air content between 4 and 6 percent. In order to achieve the targeted air content, an air entraining agent DARAVAIR 1400 was used. The water-cement ratio of 0.3 was maintained throughout the research and to achieve the targeted slump, high-range water reducer ADVA 140M was used. The engineering parameters of the high performance concrete composites and an equivalent control mix were evaluated by conducting a detailed laboratory study which included several tests, e.g., slump, fresh air content, compressive strength, splitting-tensile strength, flexural strength, resistance to rapid freezing and thawing, sealed shrinkage and free swelling, and rapid chloride permeability. The results presented show that all high performance concrete composites developed in this study achieved the targeted compressive strength of 8,000 psi (55 MPa) after 28 days of curing in water. The results of the durability tests show that the concrete composites developed in this study have trends similar to that of an equivalent conventional concrete. Based, on the results of this study, it was concluded that the concrete composites have potential to be used on real world projects and thus help the environment by substantially reducing the amount of fly ash and bottom ash going to ash ponds or landfills. Based on the experimental test result data, a detailed statistical analysis was conducted to develop an empirical model to predict compressive strength of similar concrete composites for a given amount of fly ash, bottom ash, and curing period. Additional laboratory tests were performed to validate the mathematical model.
