Portuguese Language Use among First Generation Brazilian Immigrants in Utah County: Some Considerations about Language and Ethnic IdentityPizzio, Simone 15 December 2023 (has links) (PDF)
The current study presents an investigation of the Portuguese language use among first generation Brazilian immigrants in Utah County. The research was carried out with 54 first generation immigrants. Several studies have shown that ethnic identity is related to shared cultural characteristics such as practices, beliefs, and languages (Liebkind, 2010; Pennycook, 2010; Reyes, 2010; Souza, 2016). This study explores the relationship between language and ethnic identity by analyzing the attitudes toward the Portuguese language, the contexts and factors that influence language choice, and the purposes for which the Portuguese language has been used by this selected group of immigrants. The results show that Portuguese is part of their daily life, and they teach it to their children to preserve the Brazilian culture. They mostly use the English language in contexts of work, study, religion, and socialization, but keep the Portuguese language at home, as well as to express their feelings and to keep their Brazilian ethnic identity.

Acculturation Strategies and its Effect on Depressive Symptoms in the Brazilian Immigrant Community in the Greater Toronto AreaCosta, Iara Regina Da 30 July 2008 (has links)
Among several difficulties associated with immigration, acculturation process has been
recognized as one of the main stressors and one of the major risk factors associated in the
incidence of mental disorders. The strategies adopted by individuals to deal with the
acculturation process appear to be predictive of different mental health outcomes. This
exploratory study investigated the relationship between acculturation strategies and the
occurrence of symptoms of depression in the context of the Brazilian immigrant community
living in the Greater Toronto Area. The results demonstrated that Separation and Assimilation
were the predominant strategies for this sample and that acculturation strategies failed to serve as
significant predictors of depression scores. However, participants with Separation as their
predominant acculturation strategy exhibited higher depressive symptom endorsement. The
significance of these findings in the context of previous research as well as its implications for
future research and critical multicultural practice in mental health are discussed.

The Brazilian telenovela in the intergenerational relationship of Brazilian immigrants in Japan: mediation, speeches and production of sense.Suzuki, Helen Emy Nochi 24 April 2019 (has links)
The research investigated the space for mediation of the Brazilian telenovela in the intergenerational relationship between Brazilian parents and children living in Japan. This is a case study that focused on reception and adopted the techniques of discussion group, in-depth interview and life history. The field research, conducted in Japan, involved the collection of data about the Brazilian telenovela with Brazilian immigrants, parents and children, who live in that country. The theoretical framework was based on the Cultural Studies, the Mediations approach, the Discourse Analysis (AD) and the Bakhtin\'s language studies. The main objective was to observe the senses produced by the discourses of and about the Brazilian telenovela and its possible constitution as mediation in the intergenerational relationship. The telenovela is constructed as mediation, that is, as a space through which it is possible to observe different layers of meanings provided by their discourses that combine cultural matrices and the social, economic and cultural injunctions involved in Format. Based on the analysis performed it was possible to observe the incessant clash between some aspects of the behaviours and values of the Brazilian and the Japanese cultures, constituents of the double cultural anchoring of these Brazilians. The materiality of these conflicts can be observed: in the consumption of products exhibited in the telenovela; in the discussion about the values and worldview of Brazilians and Japanese; in the estrangement and/or acceptance of behaviors shown in the telenovela. In this way, the telenovela occupies a symbolic space of mediation that brings memories, produces senses of identity and Brazilian identity sense, updates information, serves as a bridge and reference for the relations between parents and children who negotiate, discuss, debate and in this Daily confrontation they learn to establish boundaries and demarcate territories in the \"between the places\", divided between the two cultures, the Japanese and the Brazilian.

A telenovela e a produção de sentidos de identidade brasileira no discurso de imigrantes brasileiros no Japão / The Telenovela and the production of senses of Brazilian identity in the discourse of Brazilian immigrants in JapanSuzuki, Helen Emy Nochi 16 December 2014 (has links)
The research investigated the production of senses of Brazilian identity constructed in the daily life of Brazilians living in Japan based on the analysis of the discourse produced for they about the topics covered in the telenovela Amor à Vida. This was a survey of reception of qualitative approach which adopted the technique the participant observation. It was reception research of qualitative approach that used participant observation as method. In the field research Brazilian immigrants living in Japan were observed during their routine of watching Brazilian telenovelas from Globo International television channel. Based on the analysis of discourses from the participants, how the telenovela creates Brazilian identity sense in emigrated Brazilians living in a, most of the time, not belonging situation was investigated. How values, tensions and other topics were presented in the Brazilian telenovela influences in conflicts and daily life of participants was analyzed. The research showed the centrality of the telenovela as an element of identity construction that works both on a personal level as on a national level. The analysis of the discourse showed that the participants are living such a long time in Japan that they not only remember Brazil through the telenovela, but also recognize elements of self identification through comparisons and reflection as Brazilians dealing with the Japanese culture, in which they are immersed. In this sense, the analysis unveiled that Brazilians who watch telenovelas in Japan showed in their discourse meanings and values that were made based in their Brazilian cultural matrix. However, these meanings and values are systematically reconfigured by the situation in which they are living, divided between two places, of birth and of living, West and East.

Being Brazilian, Becoming Canadian: Acculturation Strategies, Quality of Life, Negative Affect, and Well-being in a Sample of Brazilian Immigrants Living in the Greater Toronto AreaDa Costa, Iara Regina 18 July 2014 (has links)
Acculturation is a predominant feature of today’s society and one that has unique implications for immigrants’ mental health. Given that two thirds of Canada’s population growth is due to immigration, understanding the effects of acculturation on newcomers should be a central focus of academic research. The present study utilized an exploratory quantitative method to investigate the associations between acculturation strategies, quality of life, and negative affect in a sample of 180 Brazilian immigrants living in the Greater Toronto Area. The mediating and moderating roles of quality of life (QOL) were explored, as well as which patterns of acculturation strategies were associated with enhanced well-being, represented by low negative affect (NA), high QOL, and high Satisfaction with Life in Canada (SLCI). Clusters analysis identified patterns of acculturation strategy use, resulting in four acculturation profiles: integrated, assimilated, separated, and marginalized. Results indicated that QOL did not act as either a mediator or moderator of the relationship between acculturation profiles and NA. With regard to well-being indicators, acculturation profiles successfully predicted NA and SLCI, with the Assimilated being the most favourable profile evidenced by its lowest NA and highest SLCI levels. While acculturation profiles did not predict QOL, the trend of the Assimilated profile being predictive of favourable well-being was also present as its members reported slightly higher QOL than their counterparts from other profiles. Well-being risk and protective factors are presented. The results highlight the importance of including control variables in future research in order to uncover the unique impact of acculturation on the mental health of immigrants. Implications for practice and future research are also discussed.
