Nicola, Marcelo Porto January 2015 (has links)
This thesis aims to investigate local management and significant features of rural development in family beef cattle breeders’ communities in the municipalities of São Jerônimo, Butiá and surroundings, Central South region of RS. In this thesis, the dynamics of rural development in the family livestock are understood as transitional or counter-current movements to the consolidation and deepening of conventional agriculture seated on parameters of the modern technical-scientific paradigm. In the studied reality, family beef cattle breeders were elevated from a marginalized and peripheral position to a central segment condition in the rural development web, reassessed for their social, environmental and economic importance in the relationship they establish with the local and regional society and native grassland ecosystems of the Rio Grande do Sul State, currently heavily impacted by degradation processes. Understanding RD as a transitional or counter-current movement this thesis uses analytical and methodological components provided by Multilevel Perspective, particularly the Strategic Management Niche, and the elements to think contemporary rural development, such as its multilevel character, the notion of multidimensional rural web, multifunctional agriculture and role of peasant farmers. Methodological procedures are performed through literature review, secondary data collection, semi-structured interviews to key informants and participant observation of countrysides, farms, and practices and trajectories. The theoretical framework utilized provides contributions to treat local experience in a dynamic perspective of RD occurring at the micro level, methodologically defined as a development niche of family farming, positioned under broader and more influential structural constraints, such as prevalent socio-technical regimes and socio-technical landscape. Despite the consolidation and greater structuring of the higher levels, there is interdependence and mutual interaction between what happens at micro and macro levels. Related to management there are three major alignments in the rural web: infrastructure and quality of life; genetic improvement of livestock and of natural grassland and domestic flocks management; the adding value and governability of markets. It’s considered that even though the notable alignments there are disagreements and inconsistencies as well. Even in the alignments most vigorous strategies and expectations, such as genetic improvement of sheep and cattle; creation of new markets, and in perception of natural pasture as valuable, productive and cheap resource, there are important inconsistencies. The most striking changes of RD are identified as: novelties; governability of markets; aspects referent to sustainability and endogeneity; and issues relating to social dimension of rural web. In this thesis, family farmers dedicated to livestock are assessed as able to reconcile profitably conservation and sustainable use of natural forage resource, emphasizing the multifunctionality of their farming styles based primarily on natural resources, on co-production and co-evolution. Despite this remarkable positive feature, deficiencies in training, management practices, and increased use of some modern industrial exogenous inputs prevent these positive impacts to be stronger on the environment and society. In the end, considerations are made about possible strategies and public policies for the improvement of local experience, which are expected to be also used in other cases and situations.

The objectives are to describe the macro and microscopical injuries of the kidneys and muscle. Three outbreaks affected different flocks of broilers. One case occurred in broiler breeders affecting two houses of a farm. In the broilers, high mortality and high index of discarding was observed and also high condemnation in the abattoir. Respiratory snicks, apathy and ununiformity were observed. In the flock of broiler breeders, decline of production and high mortality were noticed. All the animals where positive for IB serology, and positive results were also obtained on the flock where PCR was carried through. In the necropsy, swollen and renal pallor were observed, pallor and white streaks mainly of the deep pectoral muscles, and in some cases mild edema. In the histopathology examination, the kidney injuries consisted of moderate to intense glomerular hyperplasia, in some cases interstitial multifocal inflammatory infiltrate and tubular degeneration. In the muscle, interstitial edema was found, hyaline degeneration, vacuolation, hypercontraction and myophagia of the muscle fibres. In one case, moderate fibrosis was observed. In other cases, mild to moderate lymphocytic infiltration was observed in the trachea. In the broiler breeders, other than the described lesions, a peribrochial lymphoid hyperplasia and hyaline degeneration was noted in the pulmonary vessels. In all the cases a close relation was observed between renal and muscular injury / Relata-se a ocorrência de quatro surtos espontâneos de Bronquite Infecciosa (BI) cursando com nefrite e miopatia peitoral objetivando descrever as lesões macro e microscópicas do rim e músculo.

Entre chasse et pastoralisme, l'art rupestre de la région d'Arica-Parinacota (Chili) / Between hunting and pastoralism, the rock art of the Arica-Parinacota region (Chile)

Dudognon, Carole 15 June 2016 (has links)
In the far north of Chile, in the region of Arica-Parinacota, this research, centered on the study of three decorated shelters (Vilacaurani, Incani and Anocariri), aim at highlighting the socioeconomic and cultural stages of the transformation of the Andean populations in connection with the process of the animal domestication. Between 2800 and 3800 m in Andean Piedmont, the human settling seems to correspond to the ecosystem of certain species such as the guanaco and the taruca abundantly hunted during the most ancient periods. The most important testimonies of this activity, so far known, are found at the heart of shelters or on wide panels through impressive polychromatic frescoes. The artists put the accent on the animal figure, mainly Camelidae of the genus Lama (guanaco and llama) and on the representation of varied scenes such hunting, capture or grazing. These representations are significant because they evoke possible phases of the Camelid’s domestication which began around 6000 BP in the central Andes (Wings, 1986 ; Wheeler et al., 1977 ; Lavallée et Julien, 1980 ; Lavallée et al., 1995) which result in the development of the pastoral societies and the economy of production in the Andean highlands. Nevertheless, mechanisms working in this transformation remain badly known. This research offers a new reading of the artistic manifestations as first source of information to understand the socioeconomic and cultural transition of the populations in the highlands. Through the study of the pictorial scenes and the impressive system of overlapping of figures, we are capable of describing the progressive sliding, both on the technical plan and the symbolism, and the transitory stages which characterize the passage of an economy mainly based on hunting to a pastoral economy.

The study of female broiler breeders is of great importance for the country as broiler production is the third largest export item, and Brazil is the world second largest producer. The study of female breeder behavior is of scientific interest as it searches of specific pattern that may determine health and welfare in those birds. Production housing needs to provide inside environmental conditions that reaches bird's thermal comfort. This research has as objective the implementation of statistical and methodology analysis tools that may contribute to develop a system of electronic behavior monitoring. The experiment was developed with data collected under controlled environmental conditions, using birds from one genetic, and submitted to three distinct levels of ambient temperature, feed energy and age. Data were organized and processes using the software Minitab@ and SAS@. The descriptive, and exploratory analysis were applied, and afterwards the modeling - using the Generalized Estimate Equation. Estudo da influência de touro e de genearca da raça Nelore nos aspectos quantitativos e qualitativos de carcaça e da carne / Study of the influence of steer and breeders of Nellore in the quality and quantitative aspects of carcass and beef

Marina de Nadai Bonin 09 May 2008 (has links)
The present study had as objective to estimate the genetic variability between steers and breed lines of Nellore, these represented by the greatest breeders, referred to carcass and beef quality. The animals used to collect the samples of carcass and beef belonged to the project of genetic improvement and evaluation to emission of CEIP-Special Certificate of Identification and Production of CFM Farm-Ltda. The animals had age between 21 and 28 months. Were analyzed the characteristics of hot carcass weight (PCQ), rib eye area (AOL), backfat thickness (EGS), marbling (MAR).The beef quality was evaluated for the periods of 7, 14 and 21 days of ageing, as reference the drip loss (PE), cooking loss (PC) and tenderness (MAC). The evaluation of the genetic variability between the breed lines was done based in the values of the expected progeny differences (DEP) of the characteristics of PCQ, AOL, EGS, MAR and MAC at days 7, 14 and 21 of ageing. There was found a variability between steers and the breed lines studied, suggesting that a genetic process may be possible by selecting the animals to carcass and beef characteristics in the Nellore breed.

Análise do mercado de sementes de soja no Rio Grande do Sul / Analysis of soy seeds market in Rio Grande do Sul

Cirino, Jean Carlos 20 December 2010 (has links)

No. of bitstreams: 1 dissertacao_jean_carlos_cirino.pdf: 387867 bytes, checksum: 5c3bb5afc470b0617ca833072e543dd0 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2010-12-20 / The soy beans market is adjusting a restructuring since the liberation of Roundup Ready® (RR) technology by federal government in Brazil. In the latest years, the sector started to increase the internal sales, through the agriculturists consciousness about the seeds, more productive and with higher technology than pirate seeds. However, the seed market, many times is evaluated through empirical numbers that end up not representing the exact tendencies of the sector. This study has as a goal a detailed evaluation of numbers that move this market. For this it was used as a reference basis two documents sent by seed farmers to the MAPA: the relation of fields for seeds production (RC), and the production and seeds business (MP). Both documents are processed by APASSUL according to the term of technical cooperation among MAPA(SEFIA/RS), CSM and APASSUL. The observed notes are about the crops in 2005/2006, 2006/2007 and 2007/2008. The results presented a growth in legal seeds production and business, confirming the growth in the sector. It was also possible to note the new breeders that have been growing in this market. About the cultivars usage, that previously, was restrict to some materials, the scenario shows an increasing stratification with similar tendency verified in the market participation as a breeder. Note that for every hectare approved less than a half ton of seeds is commercialized, and low level of marketing is the highest risk factor.

Influência da idade da matriz e do peso do ovo incubado nas respostas de pintos de corte alimentados com rações pré-iniciais farelada, triturada ou micro-peletizada / Effect of breeder age and incubated egg weight on the responses of broiler chicks fed with mash, crumbled or micro-pelleted pre-starter diets

Ana Beatriz Traldi 12 March 2010 (has links)
Four trials were conducted to evaluate the physical form of pre-starter diets on performance and allometric growth of gastrointestinal organs of chickens from eggs having the same or different weights, hatched from Ross breeders of different ages. In trails1 and 2, 2,340 eggs were incubated and in trails 3 and 4, 2,160. The eggs percentage composition was evaluated. Trials 1 and 2, as well as trials 3 and 4, were carried out simultaneously. After hatching, 1,380 day-old chicks, males and females, from young breeders (29 weeks) or adult breeders (55 weeks) were used in performance experiments: in experiment 1 the eggs weighted 57,8 g or 68,8 g, respectively, and in experiment 3, egg weight was standardized at 62 g. The performance trials were conducted in a completely randomized design with 6 treatments and 5 replicates, and the treatments consisted of a 2 3 factorial arrangement of breeder age (young and adult) and physical form of the pre-starter feed (mash, crumbled or micro-pellets). This feed was provided at a fixed amount of 200 g per chick and, after that, the birds in all treatments were fed a common starter, grower and finisher diet in mash form, to 42 days of age. Live weight, weight gain, feed intake, feed conversion and viability were evaluated on a pen basis. The time required for total consumption of the pre-starter feeds was monitored. To evaluate the allometric growth of gastrointestinal organs (small and large intestines, liver, pancreas, proventriculus, gizzard and yolk sac), in experiments 2 and 4, 240 one-day-chicks, males and females, were distributed to six pens with the same treatments as experiments 1 and 3, respectively. Six chicks from each breeder age on the first day and four chicks at ages three, five, seven, 14 and 21 days were sacrificed. The experimental unit was each chick. The yolk from adult breeder eggs was heavier, even when the eggs had similar weight of those from young breeders. In both performance trials, better results were obtained for chickens from adult breeders, as well as, for chickens fed processed pre-starter diets. The chickens consumed 200 g of processed diets faster than the mash diet. On the first day, gizzard, proventriculus, liver and small intestine were heavier in chicks from adult breeders than in chicks from young breeders, when the former presented heavier initial weight. Pancreas, small intestine, liver and proventriculus development was superior to body growth, independent of breeder age. It is concluded that egg weight influences the chick weight at hatching, however, breeder age affects the overall performance of the chickens. Furthermore, processed feeds benefit the chicks in the pre-starter phase and this benefit is maintained in the broilers to market weight.

Effect of advanced reproductive technologies on smallholders' pig productivity in Gauteng Province

Matabane, Matshidiso Bailekae January 2018 (has links)
Thesis (Ph.D. (Animal Production)) --University of Limpopo, 2018 / Pigs are of high economic importance, especially among the smallholder pig farmers as they contribute to human nutrition, food security, poverty alleviation, enhanced livelihood and creation of employment for the rural community. However, reproductive inefficiency is the main limiting factor due to inaccessibility to superior germplasm. Therefore, advances in reproductive technologies such as oestrus synchronization and artificial insemination (AI) offers unprecedented opportunities for livestock improvement for smallholder pig farmers. The first objective determined the status of pig productivity in smallholder farms of Gauteng Province prior to the introduction of advanced reproductive technologies (ARTs). The population was divided into four strata, namely West Rand, Ekurhuleni, Tshwane and Sedibeng district municipalities. A proportional stratified random sampling procedure was used to select 71 smallholder pig farmers with the assistance of extension officers from Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (GDARD). The majority of the respondents were males (67%) and were above 50 years of age (67%), whilst 56% of the respondents had high school education. Majority of the respondents privately owned the farms (62%) and the farm infrastructure had facilities with low cost housing and modern facilities. Additionally, 47% of the respondents fed their pigs with feed swill. A large proportion of the respondents did not vaccinate their pigs (81%). Majority of respondents did not identify their pig herds (63%). Interestingly, majority of the respondents did not have breeding boars (73%) and sold their pigs at auctions (70%). The second objective determined semen characteristics evaluated by a Computer Aided Sperm Analyser® (CASA®) as a measure of boar fertility to be used for artificial insemination (AI). Sixteen ejaculates were collected from three Large White boars that are routinely used for semen collection purposes using the gloved-hand technique. The semen was extended with a commercial semen extender; Beltsville Thawing Solution, and the AI dose used consisted of 80mL semen sample (3×109 spermatozoa/mL). Aliquots of diluted semen were evaluated for spermatozoa motility using CASA®. Spermatozoa viability was evaluated using Synthetic Binding CD-14 (SYBR+)/Propidium Iodide (PI-), whereas spermatozoa morphology was evaluated using Eosin Nigrosin stain. The average semen volume, concentration and pH were 210 mL, 264.8 x 106 spermatozoa/mL and 7.1, respectively. The average values for total spermatozoa motility was 95.1%, ranging from 82.7 and 98.5%. However, XIX there were lower values found for progressive spermatozoa motility, ranging from 13.6 to 39.0%. The mean values for morphologically normal spermatozoa ranged from 47.8-60.9% and live spermatozoa ranged from 71.8-77.7%. The third objective determined sow fertility following AI at smallholder farms A total of 73 multiparous sows were artificially inseminated. Conception rates, farrowing rates, litter size and number born alive were recorded. The average conception and farrowing rates were 78.1 and 57.5%, respectively. Furthermore, AI resulted in acceptable fecundity (i.e., 11.8 litter size and 10.0 number of piglets born alive). The fourth objective determined the relationship between spermatozoa quality characteristics and sow fertility at smallholder farms in Gauteng Province. Of all fertility characteristics studied, conception rate was significantly related to total spermatozoa motility rate (r= 0.37, P<0.01), progressive motility (r= 0.31, P<0.01) and rapid motility (r= 0.40, P<0.01), although relatively low. There was a low negative relationship between spermatozoa morphological characteristics and fertility (P>0.05). The fifth objective determined the pre-weaning growth performance of piglets born following AI at smallholder farms of Gauteng province. Individual piglets were weighed using an electronic weighing scale. Litter size, number of piglets born alive, number of piglets weaned, the average piglet birth weight and average piglet weaned weight were recorded. The average litter size was 11.8 ± 0.2. The average birth weight and weaning weights were 1.9 and 6.2 kg, respectively. No significant differences were found between male and female piglets for all the growth performance characteristics. Piglets born during winter had a significantly higher (P<0.05) birth and weaning weight as compared to autumn and summer months. Season had a significant effect on birth and weaning weight (P<0.01). However, sex of piglets had no effect on all the characteristics recorded (P>0.05). The interaction between sex and season was only observed on the total number of weaned piglets (P<0.01). A highly significant positive correlation was found between litter size and number of piglets born alive (r= 0.86) and total number of piglets weaned (r= 0.50). A highly significant correlation was found between total number of piglets born alive and total number of piglets weaned (r= 0.55). In conclusion, the study demonstrated the potential benefit of adopting AI technology under smallholder production systems to disseminate superior genetic material to smallholder pig farmers in Gauteng Province. The total spermatozoa motility, progressive and rapid spermatozoa motility were the only spermatozoa motility characteristics significantly correlated XX with conception rate. Conversely, litter size and number born alive were not correlated with CASA® spermatozoa motility attributes. No relationships existed between spermatozoa morphological characteristics and fertility. The sex ratio percentage of piglets born following AI was 52:48% (females: males). The number of piglets born alive was 10.2 and 9.5 for number piglets weaned. Season influenced birth to weaning weight. However, sex had no significant influence at birth and weaning weight. Litter size affects the number of piglets born alive and weaned. The study showed that the introduction of advanced reproductive technologies improved productivity of pigs at smallholder pig farms in Gauteng Province. / Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (GDARD) and Southern African Science Service Centre for Climate Change and Adaptive Land Management (SASSCAL

Ribeiro, Claudio Marques January 2009 (has links)
The subject of the herein enclosed thesis is that particular variety of family farmers that is currently being referred to as "family cattle breeders". These farmers' main activity is the raising of beef cattle bred within small, restricted areas. The aim targeted by the present work was that of probing the existence, economical logic, and strategies employed by family cattle breeders in the Campanha (Southernmost Plains) area of Brazilian state, Rio Grande do Sul. The hypotheses presented as guidelines to this work are (a) that family cattle breeders are an actual variety within the family agricultural work universe; (b) that they result from different mindsets achieved during the several waves of land occupation; and (c), that they indeed bring important contributions into the environment and the developmental process. Sixty interviews were conduced with family farm owners in three different Campanha area counties (Bagé, Dom Pedrito, and Quaraí) which led to a better understanding of their origins and the strategies adopted by them. To these were added four interviews achieved with recipiendaries of land grants afforded them by the Agrarian Reformation processes and who had been settled in two other Campanha area counties (Hulha Negra and Candiota) all of whom opted out for beef cattle breeding, repeating therefore the historically stablished ways of cattle-raising in said area. This paper takes their chosen ways of life and their adopted agricultural styles as the most consistent theoretical explanation for the reality that was found. Data gleaned shows that family cattle breeders are indeed a particular kind of family farmers and that they orient their activities and strategies from the way of life they defined for themselves and their families. The main characteristics which were pinpointed among the family cattle breeding farmers are five, as described below. The first is that beef cattle raising is their main farming activity and that it is performed on natural grasslands and with low usage of external inputs, as their beef cattle is considered to be prime goods. This prods them into the adoption of some necessary strategies, like high percentiles of animals per hectare, the "inside" diversification of the activity (breeding and re-breeding), as well as the selling of animals only when in need of hard cash. The second is their being autonomous in relation to the market prices, setting up marketing strategies according to the family needs and not in search for the best pricing, as well as keeping away from borrowing and getting into debts. The third characteristic is employing mainly the family's own work in association with labor trading with their neighbors, a technique that allows them to face the moments when the demand for labor is strongest. The fourth is the great importance and the numbers of rural retirement benefits for family beef cattle breeders. The fifth is the presence of a high degree of self-consume, which is not significatively represented by vegetal produce, but by beef cattle meat and, all the oftener, by mutton. Even though this group of families reaches only into the lowest income brackets, the analysis of data gathered allowed for the conclusion that their way of life contributes economically, socially, and environmentally toward the processes of rural development when this is understood in a broader sense than the simple economical growth.
