Skandinavien i Yorkshire Herald under det första världskriget / Scandinavia in the Yorkshire Herald during the First World War

Larsson, Marcus January 2011 (has links)
The purpose of this dissertation is to examine the occurrence of Scandinavia in the then daily English newspaper Yorkshire Herald during the First World War. The dissertation looks into what the Yorkshire Herald wrote about Scandinavia in the parts of the newspaper where the newspaper´s own opinion was given. This approach is connected to the theoretical idea that the British local and regional press was politically free during the war period. The dissertation also looks into the number of news telegrams etcetera that concerned Scandinavia during the period. The result shows that Scandinavia, both as a whole as well as the three individual countries, was mentioned about 700 times, split over about 600 telegrams and articles, during the examined period stretching from the first of August 1914 to the eleventh of November 1918. Material that gives the newspaper´s opinion regarding issues concerning Scandinavia can be found six times during the period. Of these articles two have a slight aggressive tone, while the character of the remaining four is more neutral, even friendly and sympathetic.

The Representation of Vegans and Veganism in the British Press : A Corpus Linguistics Analysis

Santallusia Lloan, Roger January 2023 (has links)
Through the use of corpus linguistics, this paper examines the representation of veganism in four of the British newspapers with higher circulation. The method used is Corpus linguistics analysis, which is a useful tool to isolate sentences in which specific words are mentioned and therefore facilitates further analysis and comparison of these. The specific aim of the paper is comparing the use of vegan* between 2010 and 2015 in the aforementioned newspapers and spot any differences and similarities, as well as analysing whether the political stance of each newspaper also affects their views on the subject. The analysis uncovered an increase in popularity of veganism between both years, as well as a reduction of negative connotation when referring to the words under scrutiny. Veganism was also treated more neutrally. The most common way of representing veganism in a negative way was by mockery. Finally, more conservative newspapers were shown to represent veganism more negatively than the more liberal ones.

The long shadow of the emperor: fear and British press during the Napoleonic Wars (1795 - 1815) : A quantitative study on the history of the emotions

Ruiz-Tapiador Bartolomé, Juan January 2022 (has links)
"The long shadow of the emperor: fear and British press during the Napoleonic Wars (1795 –1815)” was a master thesis that combined the history of emotions with the use of quantitative computational techniques. The main objectives of the project were to detect and analyse the fear around the figure of Napoleon Bonaparte in the British press, between 1795 and 1815, and to check the feasibility of the proposed quantitative techniques for the history of emotions. The methodology consisted of the bibliographic collection of terms, web scrapping techniques, the creation of a database of mentions, and the emotional analysis of the subsequent information. The results showed how the emotion of fear was experienced in the British press, and the great explanatory potential of the methodology proposed by the study. The findings have revealed valuable information about international politics, public opinion, and erroneous assumptions in our current understandings of the Napoleonic Wars.

Special Relationship: Diskurz o britsko-amerických vztazích v britském tisku / The Special Relationship: discourse on UK-US relations in British Press

Ott, Libor January 2012 (has links)
The MA thesis "The Special Relationship: A discourse on British-American relations in the British press" focuses on a discourse analysis of the "special relationship" in 2001-2010. The thesis is based on a sample of 25 commentaries published in leading British newspapers over this period and describes the characteristic features that appeared in the discourse on the United Kingdom's most important bilateral partnership. The identified elements pertain to national identity, national interest, historical narratives, diplomatic rituals, assessment of the Prime Minister's personal role and the perception of the UK's junior status within the relationship. The thesis uses a Foreign Policy Analysis model that takes into account the role of the media in the formation of foreign policy. Methodologically, selected discourse analysis methods are used, particularly thematic analysis and analysis of metaphors. The characteristic features of the dominant discourse are identified through excerpts from relevant secondary literature on the history of the "special relationship" after WWII and subsequently compared with the results of the newspaper sample analysis. The thesis pays special attention to the repertoires of arguments used by the commentators and places them in the context of an intensive public debate on the UK's...

Le rôle du Times durant l'occupation britannique d'Égypte (1882-1956) / Times of Empire and Empire of The Times : the role of The Times during the British Occupation of Egypt (1882-1956)

Hamrat, Fatma-Zohra 25 November 2017 (has links)
This research is about The Times newspaper’s coverage of the situation in Egypt during the British occupation, that is from1882 to 1956. The historical context extends from a period when the Empire was at its apogee to its nadir. It is an attempt to suggest a new reading of the events that shaped the British policy in Egypt through the press, more precisely The Times. The objective is to determine the reactions of The Times to the evolution of the “Egyptian Question” and eventually the British policy. It will focus the imperial westward expansion in parallel with the evolution of journalism. The aim is also to approach the press from another angle, that of a press that may have an impact on, and be impacted by, political events. In other words, this study is an attempt to provide some key elements to answer the following questions: What was the role of The Times during the British occupation of Egypt? Can we consider an imperial commitment on the part of The Times? How did the editorial policy of The Times influence political decisions? What was the importance given to the “Thunderer” by policy makers? Finally, can we consider The Times as a means of conquest, a means of criticism or just a purveyor of news? We hope that this research will shed some light on the role of The Times in the construction and the maintaining of the British empire in Egypt.

Mediální obraz Československa v britském tisku 1918 - 1922 / The Image of Czechoslovakia in the British Press 1918 - 1922

Bajerová, Adéla January 2019 (has links)
This diploma thesis deals with the reception of the newly established Czechoslovakia by the British press from 1918 to 1922. My task was to find out how often and in what context did Czechoslovakia appear in the press and what was the difference between the image of the republic in each newspaper. Secondarily, my task was to evaluate the success of the Czechoslovak propaganda in Britain. The thesis consists of two parts. The first part presents the context of the emergence of Czechoslovakia, Czechoslovak-British diplomacy aims and cultural propaganda in the given period. One chapter is dedicated to the history of the British press and includes profiles of the journals examined. The practical part incorporates both quantitative and qualitative analysis. Four broadsheets in total were analysed; The Times, The Manchester Guardian, The Daily Telegraph and a Sunday newspaper The Observer. Quantitative content analysis of The Times was used to determine the frequency, the length and the interest of the mentions of Czechoslovakia as well as the theme of the articles. Based on the quantitative analysis, sample time periods were selected for the qualitative section. The qualitative analysis further deepens the quantitative part and presents the explicit and implicit attributes that Czechoslovakia was...
