Certain external factors, for instance a child with disabilities, can have a negative or positive influence on the child.
The aim of this study is to determine the influence of the child with Cerebral Palsy on the social and emotional development of siblings. The research will be done using the idiographic method. The mission of the Gareganze's Brothers in Christ Church facing the chaos of the socio-political situation in DRC resulting mostly from the question of the Congolese nationality is to dynamise the christian mission and to protect the poor, set free the captives, because God is always at their side. The DRC, though, has enormous natural resources and the competent human resources capabilities. The national institutions seem to be unable to handle this situation because of the lack of political culture, mismanagement and moral untidiness.
The successive Congolese crises mostly are the same, the common denominator resides in the causes that brought them about. The main objectives of the antagonist groups are political leadership and material wealth.

Thesis (MPhil (Visual Arts))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This dissertation aims to investigate, from a feminist perspective, representations of female
sexuality in fairy tale text and illustrations. I conduct my analysis in the form of a case study
of the Brothers Grimm’s The Handless Maiden as it appeared in the 1915 English edition of
their Children and Household Tales. My investigation is prompted by the belief that fairy
tales play an important role in the social construction of gender relations, a process known as
‘interpellation’ within contemporary feminist discourse. This due to the fact that fairy tales
are some of the earliest narratives young children get exposed to and thus help shape their
understanding of the world around them and their role as social beings in it. I start my
investigation by looking exclusively at fairy tale text – The Handless Maiden by the Brothers
Grimm - and how language gets used to construct a specific version of female sexuality; that
which is silenced and without agency, thus repressive and problematic from a feminist
perspective. Here I firmly situate my argument within a theoretical framework provided by
contemporary feminist discourse with reference to the arguments of theorists Judith Butler
and Luce Irigaray and their emphasis on the key role of language within processes of
‘interpellation’. I then move on to a discussion of fairy tale illustrations and the important role
thereof to underscore, by making visible, the particular version of female sexuality implicit in
the accompanying text. The next part of my investigation focuses on images of women in the
photo-collages of the early 20th century German artist Hannah Höch. I posit these as
exemplary of imagery with the potential to destabilize patriarchal notions of female sexuality.
By means of this investigation I hope to provide a discursive framework in which to situate
my own set of illustrations of the Grimm’s Handless Maiden, which I completed as part of the
practical component of my submission for the current degree. The final part of my discussion
focuses on my own illustrations of the Grimm’s Handless Maiden and here I will argue for
my illustrations as a means to, not only destabilize notions of female sexuality implicit in the
accompanying fairy tale text, but also a means to suggest other, alternative, readings of the
nature of the female sexual subject position implicit in the text. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie tesis ondersoek die feministiese tentoonstelling van vroulike seksualiteit in sprokies
se illustrasie en teks. My ondersoek analiseer die Broers Grimm se The Handless Maiden soos
dit verskyn het in die 1915 Engelse uitgawegenaamd, Children and Household Tales. Hierdie
ondersoek word gelei deur die aan-name dat sprokies‘n belangrike rol speel in die sosiale
konstruksie van geslag verwantskappe, ‘n proses bekend as “interpellasie” in die diskoers van
kontemporêre feminisme. Sprokies is van die vroegste narratiewe waaraan kinders blootgestel
word en beïnvloed dus hul begrip van die wêreld, ondermeer hul sosiale rol daarin. My
ondersoek begin met die fokus op The Handless Maiden se teksen hoe taal gekonstrueer word

Exploring the experiences of the sibling of a child with an intellectual disabilityJervis, Sarah Jenny 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MEdPsych)--Stellenbosch University, 2008. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study is aimed at gaining insight into the experiences of siblings of an individual
with an intellectual and physical disability. Attaining greater insight into their lived
reality, their feelings and concerns could make it possible to provide appropriate
support.
The review of selected literature provides information on many aspects of the these
siblings' experience. Although many studies are quantitative in their approach, the
literature review provides relevant and useful findings and inferences which were
used to support and substantiate findings. During this qualitative study, which is
situated within an interpretive phenomenological paradigm, four participants between
the ages of eight and sixteen years were interviewed using semi-structured
interviews. This format of interview allowed participants to use their own words to
express their personal experiences.
The results showed that siblings have both positive and negative experiences when
another sibling has an intellectual disability. Other common difficulties include
embarrassment, guilt, and the experience of differential treatment. Positive
experiences and competencies include love and acceptance, personal growth,
maturity, pride in siblings accomplishments, and appreciation for one's sibling.
Several experiences were congruent with those mentioned in the literature.
The insights into the experiences this study provides has implications for the
development and provision of sibling support programmes and interventions. At
present, state group support programmes for siblings are not provided within the
Western Cape area. The interventions and assistance that do exist seem to be
provided by the private sector only. Support can prove very costly, which means that
it is not accessible to many who require it. Sibling workshop groups could provide a
valuable support alternative to a currently "unsupported" group, the siblings. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie studie poog om insig te verkry in die ondervindings van die broers en susters
van 'n kind met intellektuele en fisiese gestremdhede. Beter insig in die realiteit van
hul leefwyse, hulle gevoelens en bekommernisse kan beter ondersteuning aan hulle
moontlik te maak.
Die ondersoek van geselekteerde literatuur voorsien inligting rakende vele aspekte
van die ondervindings van hierdie kinders. Alhoewel baie van die studies kwantitatief
in hul benadering is, het die bestaande literatuur tog relevante en bruikbare bydraes
en gevolgtrekkings verskaf wat gebruik kon word om bevindings te bevestig en te
staaf. Hierdie kwantitatiewe studie het plaasgevind in 'n verklarende
fenomenologiese paradigma en vier semi-gestruktureerde onderhoude is gevoer met
deelnemers tussen die ouderomme van 8 jaar en 16 jaar. Hierdie formaat van
onderhoudvoering dra by dat deelnemers hulle gevoelens in hul eie woorde uitdruk.
Die bevindings het gewys dat broers/susters beide positiewe en negatiewe
ondervindings van kinders met 'n intellektuele gestremdheid het. Ander algemene
probleme sluit in skaamte, skuldgevoelens en die gevoel van gedifferensieerde
behandeling. Positiewe ondervindings en vaardighede van broers en susters sluit
liefde en aanvaarding, persoonlike groei, volwassenheid, trots op die broers/suster
se bekwaamheid en die waardering van so 'n broer/suster in. Verskeie van die
ondervindings het ooreengestem met bevindings wat in die literatuur gevind is.
Die insigte in hierdie ondervindings wat deur hierdie studie voorsien word het
implikasies vir programme en intervensies wat ondersteuning aan hierdie kinders
bied. Tans is daar nie sodanige staatsgefinansierde ondersteuningsprogramme in
die Wes-Kaap area nie. Die intervensies en ondersteuning wat wel beskikbaar is
word slegs in die privaatsektor aangebied. Ondersteuning kan baie duur wees, wat
beteken dat dit vir baie kinders wat dit nodig het, ontoeganklik is.
Ondersteuningsgroepwerkswinkels kan 'n waardevolle alternatief bied vir die "nieondersteunde"
groep, die kinders.

This paper explores the dialectical concept of love in Dostoyevsky's The Brothers Karamazov through Katerina and Grushenka, the heroines, and Dmitri Karamazov. Dostoyevsky's dialectic is most accurately described by the terms Eros and Agape, as defined by Denis de Rougemont in Love in the Western World. Chapter One examines the character of Katerina and establishes that although her love is ostensibly Agape, her most frequent expression of love is Eros. Chapter Two establishes that Grushenka's most frequent expression of love is Agape although ostensibly Eros. Chapter Three demonstrates how each woman personifies a pole of Dmitri Karamazov's inner conflict, and then traces his development with regard to his relationship to each woman.

Regaining Equilibrium: Understanding the Process of Sibling Adjustment to Pediatric Acquired Brain InjuryBursnall, Samantha, n/a January 2004 (has links)
This study developed a comprehensive framework for understanding the process of sibling adjustment to pediatric acquired brain injury (ABI). Grounded theory methodology was employed to inductively explore the issues siblings perceived to be their main concerns and how they managed these concerns. Fifty-three interviews were conducted recursively with twenty child and adolescent siblings of individuals with an ABI, four adult siblings of individuals with an ABI and four child and adolescent siblings of individuals with congenital disability. Observational and secondary data from hospital staff and parents were also analyzed. The framework was developed and verified through simultaneous data collection and analysis (Glaser, 1978; Strauss & Corbin, 1990). The main issue of concern for siblings following their brother or sister's ABI was the loss of equilibrium in their lives. Losing equilibrium was defined by the concepts of vulnerability and emotional turmoil. Specifically, following ABI, siblings were confronted with the vulnerability of their assumptive world, which was influenced by their exposure to unforeseen circumstances, mortality, the enduring nature of their brother or sisters injury, and the perceived vulnerability of their family unit. In response to these losses, siblings experienced emotional turmoil, including acute anxiety, chronic worry, ambivalent emotions and disenfranchised grief. Losing equilibrium was an ongoing concern for siblings that threatened their sense of security, safety, predictability and control for many years post injury. To manage these ongoing concerns, siblings employed a variety of interrelated strategies to regain equilibrium. These strategies were conceptualized by the concepts, navigating and sacrificing. The purpose of these strategies was to restore safety, predictability and control in the siblings' environment. Navigating required siblings to negotiate the enduring disequilibrium in their lives, by challenging new rules with old tools, withdrawal, trying and buying, merging the familiar and the unfamiliar and integrating. Sacrificing required siblings to relinquish their needs and desires to regain equilibrium and was illustrated through the concepts, surrogate parent, surrendering parental attention, emotional repression, and self-blame. These self-sacrificing strategies appeared to influence siblings' long-term personal development. For instance, siblings believed that they became more responsible, understanding, tolerant, and cautious in everyday activities. The data indicated that these personal changes subsequently maintained siblings sacrificing behaviors. Although sacrificing strategies were employed by some siblings from the time of the ABI, most siblings mastered their loss of equilibrium through the navigating process. Like the non-finite nature of losing equilibrium, regaining equilibrium was an ongoing cyclical process. Rather than focusing on adjustment outcomes only, the current study has extended previous research by providing a framework for understanding the process of sibling adjustment to ABI. This framework provides a set of integrated categories, concepts, hypotheses and propositions to inform future research and practice.

Born in south-eastern Arkansas, Barb and Debbie haunted Amber Nicole Brooks until she initiated them into the world of fiction in an initial short story set in 1970. Since then, many stories, ranging from the 1960s to 1990s, have been born of these characters’ exploits, despair, and erotic encounters. In a drastic overhaul of prose, Amber has reworked the episodes of these characters lives into one long, linear narrative, a thing some folks might perhaps characterize as a novel.
