The results of the challenges posed to the sector have led the biscuit and pasta industry to restructure, achieving a significant growth in sales in the last two decades, both the expansion of consumption in the domestic market and the expansion of supply through diversification and Product differentiation. This sector also had an increase in sales to the foreign market, especially since 2003, a period in which it has increased its exports. This work seeks to understand the transformations that occurred in the agribusiness manufacturing Chain, emphasizing the biscuit and pasta industry in Brazil. In view of the proposal, we sought to identify and analyze the main factors that, since the 1930s, have played a role in the development of the sector and its recent restructuring and have impacted on the spatial dynamics, both productive and markets. To that end, it is considered as an element of the multiple determinations present in this research: the state, political and institutional changes, wheat production, changes in the pattern of income consumption in society, business strategies in the sector, mergers and acquisitions, Expansion of the domestic market and exports.

Edson Ricardo Barbero 09 October 2008 (has links)
The central objective of this thesis was to investigate the manner in which competitive strategies are developed in Brazilian companies, in the state of São Paulo, in the secondary sector of economy. The process which gives rise to these strategies is called formation without, however, suggesting that there is a systematic formula to decision making. The available literature on this topic is fragmented and one dimensional. The present work seeks to offer a solution to remedy this limitation by means of both a conceptual approach and a multiple methodology. The investigation was carried out in two stages: (1) a survey through questionnaires answered by 354 companies and (2) one case study. Through this methodology and the proposal of a five-dimensional model of comprehension, the study tries to provide a general view of the phenomenon of strategy formation. The results show that companies regard their strategic process as being predominantly deliberated, apolitical, rational and markedly dictated by the environment. However, such conclusions are neither homogeneous in the universe of companies nor conceptually definitive considering that the indicators built to measure such dimensions did not present distinctive values and deviated considerably from the average. Quite the contrary, the results have shown that the predominant theories do not correspond closely with the Brazilian reality. Where there is a connection with the growth of the annual gross revenue, significant - though weak correlations were verified between the latter and the perceived use of rationality and discretionarity. Thus the companies with higher gross revenue growth between the years 2006 and 2007 were the ones that declared assessing their strategic alternatives systematically, developing formal planning and studying the environment carefully. The companies with lower results, on the other hand, were politically deterred from implementing their strategies and their plans were determined by external forces. The case study revealed the same results in general. The main conclusions of this thesis refers to the need of implementing a dual approach: developing a formal, long-term strategic planning while allowing for emerging strategies in the daily corporate routine. Furthermore, politically oriented decisions should be avoided and actions aiming at strengthening economic power are recommended. However, in spite of these findings, the question of how strategies are developed remains open and the answer also seems to depend on the specific characteristics of each enterprise. Despite this, it is hoped that this thesis proves to be a useful contribution to practioners as well as researchers.

Development and diffusion of building-integrated photovoltaics : analysing innovation dynamics in multi-sectoral technologies

Gazis, Evangelos January 2015 (has links)
The ongoing transformation of the energy system along a more sustainable trajectory requires advancements in a range of technological fields, as well as active involvement of different societal groups. Integration of photovoltaic (PV) systems in the built environment in particular is expected to play a crucial long-term role in the deployment of renewable energy technologies in urban areas, demanding the successful cooperation of planners, architects, engineers, scientists and users. The realisation of that technological change will require innovation at both an individual (within firms and organisations) and a collective (sector) level, giving rise to systemic approaches for its characterisation and analysis of its drivers. This study investigates the processes that either accelerate or hinder the development and diffusion of Building-Integrated PV (BIPV) applications into the market. Affected by developments in both the renewable energy and construction industries, the BIPV innovation system is a multi-sectoral case that has been explored only partially up to now. Acknowledging the fact that drivers of innovation span the globalised BIPV supply chain, this research adopts both an international and a national spatial perspective focusing on the UK. The analysis is based on a novel analytical framework which was developed in order to capture innovation dynamics at different levels, including technological advancements within firms, competition and synergy with other emerging and established innovation systems and pressures from the wider socio-economic configuration. This hybrid functional framework was conceived by combining elements from three academic strands: Technological Innovation Systems, the Multi-Level Perspective and Business Studies. The empirical research is based on various methods, including desktop research, semi-structured interviews and in-depth firm-level case studies. A thorough market assessment provides the techno-economic background for the research. The hybrid framework is used as a guide throughout the empirical investigation and is also implemented in the analytical part of the study to organise and interpret the findings, in order to assess the overall functionality of the innovation system. The analysis has underlined a range of processes that affect the development and diffusion of BIPV applications including inherent technological characteristics, societal factors and wider transitions within the energy and construction sectors. Future approaches for the assessment and governance of BIPV innovation will need to address its hybrid character and disruptiveness with regards to incumbent configurations, in order to appreciate its significance over the short and long term. Methodological and conceptual findings show that the combination of insights from different analytical perspectives offers a broader understanding of the processes affecting innovation dynamics in emerging technologies. Different approaches can be used in tandem to overcome methodological weaknesses, provide different analytical perspectives and assess the performance of complex innovation systems, which may span multiple countries and sectors. By better reflecting complexities, tensions and synergies, the framework developed here offers a promising way forward for the analysis of emerging sustainable technologies.

A Human Capital Framework for inclusion in Company Annual Reports - A South African perspective

Kasselman, Reuphillan 09 November 2006 (has links)
A company’s ability to support its business strategy with it’s Human Capital is an important indication of the company’s future business performance. No standard or framework to enable the inclusion of Human Capital information in company reporting to demonstrate the effect on performance currently exists. Traditional HR metrics fail to report on the level of performance, knowledgebase or value of Human Capital, making it virtually impossible for stakeholders or valuators of companies to take this most important asset into account in valuing the company against it’s competitors. This exploratory study has been commissioned to add new theory which would span further research with the objective of improving the reporting systems and/or methodologies to value Human Capital for South African industry. The study poses the following questions: 1. What insight should investors and other external stakeholders have into the Human Capital employed by a specific organisation? 2. How best to ensure that Human Capital is reported and the information is trusted by investors and other stakeholders as seen as relevant, reliable and consistent, adding value to shareholders? 3. Which Human Resource Management components can form a basis for comparative external reporting on Human Capital (if any)? The study created an innovative framework for reporting which, is viewed as an improved, practical and theoretical approach and method relating to Human Capital and value creation for Human Assets. Triangulation was used to include a number of different metrics used by HR, linked to a framework that allows those who uses it to link quantitative calculations to Human Capital dimensions. Further testing may be required due to the limited insight and knowledge of current practitioners which may have skewed some of the results. This framework also links to a number of business questions and metrics which in turn, link to broader HR strategic themes and recommendations for reporting as part of company annual reports and which Human Capital aspects should be included as standard in such a report. The study provides Human Resource practitioners with the ability to counter the one-sidedness of viewing people as purely costs, demonstrating the value of Human Assets in quantitative terms. / Thesis (PhD (Organisational Behaviour))--University of Pretoria, 2006. / Human Resource Management / unrestricted

Orientador: Bastiaan Philip Reydon / Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Economia / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-26T13:32:17Z (GMT). Concluímos afirmando que em toda a sociedade é necessário desenvolver a ideia da necessidade de construção de um novo paradigma sustentável, onde o sistema econômico, a sociedade e o meio-ambiente possam se desenvolver harmoniosamente / Abstract: The main objective of this work is to evidence the private and public initiative that the recognition of sustainability-related subjects as business opportunities is crucial and advantageous to their management strategies. The work is the defense of hypothesis that the challenges related to sustainability should not be considered only as an externality of the production system, which charges the business, but as a source of competitive advantage and a new way to innovate, assisting in strategic positioning businesses and promoting these success in their markets. In the dissertation a case study is conducted at the Siemens AG Group, which can be considered an example of a corporation that is seeking to combine its business development to the sustainability issues. A literature review on the relationship between corporate strategy and sustainability indicates that innovation has key role in promoting sustainable development and that it should be understood according to its three main dimensions: environmental, economic and social. Furthermore, sustainable practices should be part of both corporate strategies and business units competitive strategies, also reinforcing the strategic positioning already adopted by these companies. The case study found that the environmental and economic dimensions are part of the Siemens Group corporate and competitive strategies, but the company still needs to develop the social dimension in order to really consolidate itself as a sustainable company. We conclude by saying that in all society is necessary to develop the idea of the necessity to build a new sustainable paradigm, where the economic system, society and the environment should develop harmoniously / Mestrado / Desenvolvimento Economico, Espaço e Meio Ambiente / Mestra em Desenvolvimento Econômico
