The impact of the supply chain management policy on the Limpopo office of the premierChauke, Dzunekani David January 2021 (has links)
Thesis (MPAM.) -- University of Limpopo, 2021 / The South African government introduced the Supply Chain Management Framework in 2003, with a vision of creating a seamless system intended to play a critical role in service delivery to communities while achieving the objectives of cost-effectiveness, fairness, equity, transparency and ethics. This study focused on the impact of Supply Chain Management Policy Implementation in the Limpopo Office of the Premier.
Qualitative data were collected, primarily in the form of semi-structured interviews using an interview schedule consisting of both closed and open-ended questions with the Chief Financial Officer, Director (SCM), Deputy Directors (Demand, Acquisition, Logistics and Inventory, Asset and Transport Management) and SCM nineteen SCM practitioners. These officials provided sufficient information concerning the effect of Supply Chain Management policy implementation in the Limpopo Office of the Premier.
The study established that failure to implement SCM policy hurts service delivery. The effective implementation results in improved service delivery, whereas poor implementation results in the poor quality of service to the public, fraud and corruption, irregular and fruitless expenditures as well as negative departmental image.

Thesis (MBA (Business Management))--Stellenbosch University, 2008. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Distell Group limited is South Africa's leading producer and marketer of fine wines,
spirits and ready-to-drinks. The wine division has been confronted with limitations on
pressing capacity for a number of years. Sales of Distell wine brands are projected to
grow substantially, in particular in the premium and super premium categories.
Therefore a need for increase sUstainable supply of wine was created.
The objective of this study was to increase the throughput in Distell wineries
significantly, without or with minimal cash investment, by applying the principles of a
combined supply chain strategy. To achieve this, the study needed to allow for the
analysis of various scenarios, and indicate where the various constraints were within
the process.
Theory of constraint, which is a management philosophy aiming to continually
achieve more of the system's goal was applied to the Distell situation. The focus
points were to create value for the organisation, with collaboration between grape
farmers and the wineries.
It was necessary to follow a process of data capturing, and the data obtained from
the various sources in 2008 was combined into one database to develop a capacity
evaluation model.
There is no doubt that the Distell wineries as a group, improved their efficiency over
the last number of years, with effective management of the individual wineries. There
is however enough evidence to support the change to a combined supply chain
strategy, which could unlock more total benefits than the individual management. It is
clear from the findings in this study that not all the current available capacity is fully
utilised.
This study found that the white process in Distell was working at a higher than
required rate of the set capacity targets, and would need substantial capital
investment to increase throughput. The red process indicated opportunities for
increase throughput in the total system. It is possible to increase total throughput and
maintain quality for Distell wineries. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Distell is een van Suid Afrika se grootste produseerders en bemarkers van hoe
gehalte wyn, spiritus produkte en alkoholiese drankies. Die wynkelder omgewing
ervaar al vir 'n geruime tyd kapasiteit tekorte. Die vraag na Distell wynhandelsmerke
verwag om 'n konstante groei te toon oor die volgende paar jare, veral op die
premium en super premium katogoriee. Oit veroorsaak 'n groeiende behoefte vir die
volhoubare voorsiening van wyn, binne die maatskapy.
Die doel van die studie was om produksie te verhoog binne die Distell kelders, met
min of geen kapitale beleging, deur 'n holistiese strategie te volg ten opsigte van die
bestuur van die waardeketting. Die studie het verskeie alternatiewe ondersoek met
die doe I om die beperkings in die proses te identifiseer en te ontleed.
Die bestuurs filosofie 'Theory of constraint' is toegepas, waar daar gestreef word om
meer te bereik, van die mikpunt wat ge5tel is vir 'n spesifieke proses. Die hoofdoel
van die maatskapy was om waarde te skep, deur samewerking tussen druiwe
produsente en die verskiliende Distell kelders.
Die nodige data vir die ontleding van die beskikbare kapasiteit is verkry gedurende

is ruimte vir verbetering, sonder groot kapitale spandering. Die studie het gevind dat
die totale proses meer volumes rooidruiwe kan hanteer, en steeds voldoen aan die
nodige kwaliteit vereistes.

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) adoption in the South African retail sector: an investigation of perceptions held by members of the retail sector regarding the adoption constraintsLiu, Haidi January 2008 (has links)
Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology is a ethod of identifying unique items using radio waves that communicate between RFID tags and readers without line-of-sight readability. RFID technology provides great potential in many industries and a wide spectrum of possible uses. Areas of application include person identification, logistics, pharmaceutical, access control, security guard monitoring and asset management. One of the areas where RFID is being used and where it promises excellent results is the retail industry. While RFID systems have the potential to revolutionise the way products and goods are tracked and traced in the retail supply chain, barriers to its widespread adoption exist: for example; technical constraints, return on investment constraints, a lack of awareness and education and as well as privacy and security issues. The research aims to identify the barriers to the adoption of RFID and to investigate the perceptions of RFID held by members of the retail sector in South Africa (SA). Current research and available literature are used to identify RFID adoption barriers and a conceptual framework on this subject is proposed, which is then verified by SA retailers’ perceptions, established by means of a survey. Initial barriers to widespread adoption include a shortage in skills, a lack of standards, high costs associated with RFID devices, the difficulty of integrating with current legacy systems, and a lack of familiarity with the system. Finally, an enhanced framework is proposed, describing RFID adoption barriers within the South African retail sector. In summary, the framework is an outline of the barriers impacting RFID adoption in the SA retail sector that need to be considered and addressed. The framework identifies six categories of RFID adoption barriers, with each category containing two or more barriers relating to that particular category. These categories are Technological, Cost and return on investment, Privacy and security, Implementation, Organisational factors and People.

Factors influencing the adoption of enterprise application architecture for supply chain management in small and medium enterprises with Capricorn District MunicipalityLamola, Kingston Xerxes Theophilus January 2021 (has links)
Thesis (M.COM. (Business Management)) -- University of Limpopo, 2021 / Increasing consumer demand, customer expectations, and change in technology compel industrial corporations, governments and small medium enterprises (SMEs) to adopt Enterprise Application Architecture (EAA). EAA is a system where the applications and software are connected to each other in such a way that new components can easily be integrated with existing components. This study focused on how internal and external factors impact the adoption of EAA for Supply Chain Management (SCM) in SMEs, located in the Capricorn District Municipality. Data is analysed through a statistical package for the social sciences (SPSS version 25). A quantitative methodology with self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data from SMEs (SMEs owners and managers). In total, 480 questionnaires were distributed and 310 useable were returned. Cronbach’s Alpha was used to measure reliability. Data validity is obtained through the use of Kolmogorov-Sminorv-Test to ensuring that the questionnaire was based on assumptions from accepted theories as set out in the literature review. From the research findings, it was concluded that the adoption of EAA for SCM in SMEs depends on internal factors, external factors and perceived attitudes towards the adoption of EAA. The managerial implications of the study is based on actual results such as; (a) Internal factors on owners’ characteristics were described as assessment of interior dynamics affecting the enterprise, of which the management have a full control over them, such as employees, business culture, norms and ethics, processes and overall functional activities, (b) The Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA) revealed that behavioural measures on Enterprise Resources that depends on speculations about the intensions towards the adoption of EAA for SCM, (c) Compatibility in Diffusion Theory of Innovation ascertains that Technology Acceptance Models need to be linked with relevant Information System Components to have a functional EAA for SCM, (d) The Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) encourages apparent behaviour on control for supplementary forecaster on intentions of employees towards the adoption of EAA for SCM in SMEs, (e) The TPB encourages apparent behaviour on control for supplementary forecaster on intentions of employees towards the adoption of EAA for SCM in SMEs, (f) Consultations with government parastatals or legal representatives of the enterprise would save the SMEs against any unforeseen challenges such as product liabilities, legal costs on lawsuit, tax evasion or avoidance penalties so forth, (g) The Diffusion Theory of Innovation (DTI) proposes that the Perceived Attitudes towards the Adoption of EAA have is affected by behaviour challenges from employees’ personal conduct that affect SCM activities within the SMEs, and (h) The DTI on the intention towards the adoption of EAA for SCM provides the competence in limiting some negative thoughts about the integrative phases or steps limiting the adoption of EAA for SCM.

Challenges faced by supply chain management officials in terms of implementing the procurement process at the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development in Waterberg, Vhembe and Mopani DistrictsMakgaleng, Manee Lucia January 2022 (has links)
Thesis (MBA) -- University of Limpopo, 2022 / The purpose of this study was to investigate challenges faced by Supply Chain Management (SCM) officials in the implementation of the procurement process at the Limpopo Department of Agriculture and Rural Development in Sekhukhune and Capricorn District as per the approval by TREC. The researcher requested the Head of Department for the Limpopo Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to grant approval to conduct the study at Sekhukhune and Capricorn Districts. The Head of Department delegated the Departmental Research Committee to attend to the researcher’s request. The Departmental Research Committee advised the researcher and granted approval to conduct the study at Waterberg, Mopani and Vhembe District offices, since the researcher is working at Sekhukhune District sharing the same complex with Capricorn District office. A qualitative research method was used to collect data which was collected using structured interview questions. Participants in the study were officials working at Waterberg and Vhembe District. The researcher was unable to conduct research at Mopani District due to the unavailability of the participants. The findings revealed that SCM officials are not adequately trained but are still expected to deliver service efficiently and effectively. The study further revealed that there is a shortage of staff and SCM officials are struggling to deliver because of IT Infrastructure network problems.
It was concluded that SCM Practitioners are facing some challenges in the implementation of the procurement process at Limpopo Department of Agriculture and Rural Development in Waterberg and Vhembe District offices. The respondents indicated that there is a shortage of staff and also that posts which are vacant are not given priority. In addition, the IT Infrastructure Network problem was a big challenge to SCM Practitioners since they are without network most of the time while their systems require daily network access. The research indicated that officials are not well trained and that there is lack of communication between the districts and Head office.
It is recommended that vacant posts be filled immediately after the post becomes vacant and that the Department should develop a communication tool which will be circulated to all SCM officials. Management at head office is advised to arrange

monthlymeetingsanda SCM forum inviting all SCM officials starting from the lower level upwards to address challenges and update each other about the new developments within the Unit.
It is recommended that the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development introduce intensive Training programmes within the Department to ensure that SCM Practitioners remain well informed. It is also recommended that the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development make a concerted effort to train top management in order to solicit their full support to the districts. It is recommended that the Department develops its SCM policy. The Department is advised to install Wi-Fi to officials working for the Limpopo Department of Agriculture and Rural Development at all five Districts in order to promote effective and efficient service delivery. It is recommended that the Department should allocate all necessary Logis training to SCM officials before they get access to the system. The Department needs to work with Provincial Treasury on the allocation of the items which need to be procured e.g seed and seedling in order to speed up service delivery.
It is recommended to the Department to appoint well qualified and experienced SCM officials to fill vacant posts, to offer training to officials who are already within the Unit and provide Bursaries to SCM officials to acquire long-term qualifications such as Diplomas and Degrees.

Supply chain resilience refers to the capability of a supply chain to both withstand and adapt to unexpected disturbances. In today's turbulent business environment, firms are continually seeking to create more resilience within their supply chain through increased information communication technology use and enhanced business-to-business relationships. The focus of this dissertation is the investigation of how information communication technology creates resilience at the differing process levels of supply chain operations. Past research into information communication technology use within supply chains has often been conducted at the macro-level of supply chain phenomena. As such, there is still much to understand about how decision-makers interact with information communication technology at the micro-level of supply chain decision-making. A more in-depth, broad coverage of this interaction will provide both practitioners and academics a better understanding of how to leverage information communication technology in achieving supply chain resilience. To meet this aim, this dissertation contains three essays that re-orient conceptual thinking about supply chain phenomenon, explore how advances in information communication technology influence business-to-business relationships, and identify how information communication technology effects the decision-making of supply chain managers.

practices, with the aim of improving supply chain performance. The conceptual
framework was exploratively tested by means of empirical research to determine
whether it can be used as an assessment tool to assess the SCD practices of
organisations. The study concluded that the conceptual framework that was
developed in this study can be used as an assessment tool with which organisations

An integrated approach to risk management for a bulk coal export logistic chainBotha, Andre 11 1900 (has links)
In an ever-changing world where economic growth is inter-alia dependent on the export of bulk
minerals, the risk and the severity of risk incidences in the bulk mineral supply chain should be
minimised. In South Africa the export of coal is a large contributor to the GDP and any risk to
this supply chain will directly affect its contribution to the GDP. Although all the stakeholders
in the bulk coal export logistic chain manage the risk in their own domain, the bulk export
logistic chain represents a supply chain structure where the risk of one stakeholder influences the
risk of another stakeholder. Therefore, to reduce the total risk, an integrated risk management
framework for the bulk coal export logistic chain is required.
This study investigated the risks and the risk management processes in the bulk coal export supply
chain. This logistic chain was chosen based on the monetary value the chain represents and the
contribution to the GDP. A qualitative research design was used with one-on-one interviews and
content analysis of risk management policies and procedures to obtain the data. The study revealed
that there are risks that could not be managed on an individual stakeholder level and therefore an
integrated risk management approach that considers the total bulk coal logistics export chain is
