Since the mid 90's computer communication has become more and more common in cars and other auto mobiles. CAN based networks with sensors transmitting small data packets are utilized in the automotive industry to operate and supervise vehicles' functionality. To ease communication several higher layer protocols for CAN based networks have been developed. In some applications it is necessary to exchange information between networks using different protocols, and by connecting the two networks to a gateway, the information is translated and forwarded and intercommunication is enabled. This master thesis is conducted at Torqeedo GmbH, Munich. Theme of the thesis was “Designing and Development of a Data Logging and Monitoring Tool”. Term “data logging” refers to the gathering or collection of specific data over a period of time. Monitoring means evaluate the data we are logging. Tools for data logging and monitoring are used in variant application these days. In medical, in-vehicle data logging and environment monitoring. This data could be voltage, current temperature, Time stump, heartbeat of the patient, vehicle fuel level etc. To capture and log data various communication channels used. Such channel varies from simple data cable to satellite link. There are variant protocols used for different communication channels. For our DBHS logging and monitoring tool we are using CANopen protocol. Main goal of this thesis is to develop a tool which can make debugging easy and log connection box data so we can use logged data later on for offline data analysis and simulation purposes.

Dimensionality Reduction for Commercial Vehicle Fleet MonitoringBaldiwala, Aliakbar 25 October 2018 (has links)
A variety of new features have been added in the present-day vehicles like a pre-crash warning, the vehicle to vehicle communication, semi-autonomous driving systems, telematics, drive by wire. They demand very high bandwidth from in-vehicle networks. Various electronic control units present inside the automotive transmit useful information via automotive multiplexing. Automotive multiplexing allows sharing information among various intelligent modules inside an automotive electronic system. Optimum functionality is achieved by transmitting this data in real time. The high bandwidth and high-speed requirement can be achieved either by using multiple buses or by implementing higher bandwidth. But, by doing so the cost of the network and the complexity of the wiring in the vehicle increases.
Another option is to implement higher layer protocol which can reduce the amount of data transferred by using data reduction (DR) techniques, thus reducing the bandwidth usage. The implementation cost is minimal as only the changes are required in the software and not in hardware. In our work, we present a new data reduction algorithm termed as “Comprehensive Data Reduction (CDR)” algorithm. The proposed algorithm is used for minimization of the bus utilization of CAN bus for a future vehicle. The reduction in the busload was efficiently made by compressing the parameters; thus, more number of messages and lower priority messages can be efficiently sent on the CAN bus.
The proposed work also presents a performance analysis of proposed algorithm with the boundary of fifteen compression algorithm, and Compression area selection algorithms (Existing Data Reduction Algorithm). The results of the analysis show that proposed CDR algorithm provides better data reduction compared to earlier proposed algorithms. The promising results were obtained in terms of reduction in bus utilization, compression efficiency, and percent peak load of CAN bus. This Reduction in the bus utilization permits to utilize a larger number of network nodes (ECU’s) in the existing system without increasing the overall cost of the system. The proposed algorithm has been developed for automotive environment, but it can also be utilized in any applications where extensive information transmission among various control units is carried out via a multiplexing bus.

Increasing efficiency in ECU function development for Battery Management SystemsSingh Rajput, Shivaram January 2016 (has links)
In the context of automotive industries today, the focus of ECU function development is always on finding the best possible combinations of control algorithms and parameter. The complex algorithms with broad implementation range requires optimal calibration of ECU parameters to achieve the desired behaviour during the drive cycle of the vehicle. With the growing function complexity of automotive E/E Systems, the traditional approaches of designing the automotive embedded systems are not suitable. In order to overcome the challenge of complexity, many of the leading automotive companies have formed a partnership in order to develop and establish an open industry standard for automotive E/E architecture called AUTOSAR. In this thesis, toolchain for ECU function development following AUTOSAR standard and an efficient measurement and calibration mechanism using XCP on CAN will be investigated and implemented. Two toolchains will be proposed in this thesis, describing their usage in different stages of ECU function development and in calibration. Both these toolchains will be tested to prove its working. / I området utveckling av funktionalitet på elektroniska styrsystem inom bilindustrin idag, ligger fokus på att finna den bästa kombinationen av reglermetoder och styrparametrar. Dessa avancerade system, med breda användningsområden, kräver bästa möjliga injustering av dess kalibrerbara parametrar, för att nå önskat beteende vid användning av fordonet. Det ökande omfånget av funktionskraven på styrsystemen, innebär att sedvanlig metodik för utveckling av dessa system inte är lämplig. För att kunna lösa dessa svårigheter, har de stora inom bilindustrin ingått ett samarbete, där de tillsammans skapat och utvecklar en industristandard för funktionsoch systemutveckling av styrsystem. Standarden kallas AUTOSAR. Denna rapport beskriver hur en kedja av utvecklingsverktyg som följer AUTOSAR-standarden kan användas, för att undersöka och använda en metod för systemövervakning och parameterkalibrering, genom användning av XCP över CAN.
