Children's Vocabulary Development : The role of parental input, vocabulary composition and early communicative skills

Cox Eriksson, Christine January 2014 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to examine the early vocabulary development of a sample of Swedish children in relation to parental input and early communicative skills. Three studies are situated in an overall description of early language development in children. The data analyzed in the thesis was collected within a larger project at Stockholm University (SPRINT- “Effects of enhanced parental input on young children’s vocabulary development and subsequent literacy development” [VR 2008-5094]). Data analysis was based on parental report via SECDI, the Swedish version of the MacArthur-Bates Communicative Development Inventories, and audio recordings. One study examined parental verbal interaction characteristics in three groups of children with varying vocabulary size at 18 months. The stability of vocabulary development at 18 and 24 months was investigated in a larger study, with focus on children’s vocabulary composition and grammatical abilities. The third study examined interrelations among early gestures, receptive and productive vocabulary, and grammar measured with M3L, i.e. three longest utterances, from 12 to 30 months. Overall results of the thesis highlight the importance of early language development. Variability in different characteristics in parental input is associated with variability in child vocabulary size. Children with large early vocabularies exhibit the most stability in vocabulary composition and the earliest grammatical development. Children’s vocabulary composition may reflect individual stylistic variation. Use of early gestures is associated differentially with receptive and productive vocabulary. Results of the thesis have implications for parents, child- and healthcare personnel, as well as researchers and educational practitioners. The results underscore the importance of high quality in adult-child interaction, with rich input fine-tuned to children’s developmental levels and age, together with high awareness of early language development. / SPRINT project

Sudden death is the leading cause of decease, because of that, the implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) has become an important therapeutic option in this disease. Objective: To define the prevalence and predictors of electrical storm (ES) in patients with Chronic Chagas Heart Disease (CCh) with an ICD. Methods: We retrospectively studied 81 consecutive patients with CCh in whom an ICD was implanted between January 2004 to December 2007, with a mean follow up of 45,9 ± 15 months. Patients were classified into two groups according to the presence of ES episodes. We compared baseline and funcional characteristics. p values less than 0,05 were considered statistically significant. Results: Thirty five patients (43,2%) developed TE during follow up. By univariate analysis, QRS width ≥ 150 ms (p=0,001), previous pacemaker (p=0,001), ventricular tachycardia (VT) for indication of ICD (p=0,001) and cumulative percent ventricular pacing (C%VP) > 40%/80%) were all predictors of TE. However, by multivariate analysis only the indication of ICD for VT (odds ratio (OR) = 9.16, 95% CI: 1.98 to 42.78, p = 0.005) and C%VP > 40%/80% (OR = 6.30, 95% CI: 1.56 to 25.49, p = 0.010) were independent predictors of TE. Conclusion: 1- ES is very frequent in subjects with CCh and ICD; 2- Indication of ICD for VT and C%VP > 40%/80% were independent predictors of TE.

Estudo descritivo e compreensivo da capacidade adaptativa de pacientes adultos submetidos ao implante de cardioversor desfibrilador implantável / Descriptive study and understanding of adaptive capacity of adult patients undergoing implantation of implantable cardioverter defibrillator

Andréa Cristina Boldrim Pinto Gomes 25 November 2014 (has links)
The implantable cardioverter - defibrillator (ICD) is an electronic device used to treat patients with episodes or risk of cardiac arrest. It is able to continuously monitor of the patients heart rate for the recognition of fatal arrhythmias and the consequent triggering of shocks to reverse them. These electric shocks are classified as appropriate when the triggering occurs due to potentially fatal arrhythmias or inappropriate when the ICD fires the shock due to incorrect interpretation of the heart beat. In general, the shocks occur while patients are conscious, thus causing unexpected discomfort of strong intensity. The way the patient experiences such events, their reactions and their ability to cope with unexpected situations substantially influence their adaptation to the disease and to ICD. Furthermore, the device is a foreign object lodged inside the body, which refers to a malfunction of the heart and may arouse ambivalent feelings and difficulty of adaptation. Thus, the main objective of this study was to describe and understand how surveyed patients experienced and adapted to ICD implantation from the four variables related to operation of the device: the absence of shocks, the presence of appropriate shocks, the presence of inappropriate shocks and presence of (appropriate and inappropriate) mixed shocks. In order to carry out the study, the clinical-qualitative method was used. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 4 patients undergoing ICD implantation that represent each variable. Inclusion criteria were male patients with previous ischemic heart disease, ICD implantation as primary or secondary prevention procedure of sudden cardiac death (SCD ), aged between 50 and 70 years who had the implanted device for at least two years. All patients were selected from the outpatient clinic of the Clinical Unit of Cardiac Pacing of the Heart Institute - HC - USP (Hospital das Clinicas, Medical School, University of São Paulo). Data were analyzed having the Psychosomatic and Freudian Psychoanalytic referential and subsequently categorized by the Revised Operational Adaptive Diagnostic Scale (ROADS). The results have shown that adaptation (according to the concept used) to the impact of ICD and shock is directly linked to the impact of AMI and to the disease as a whole and that the reactions of patients on the different episodes seem analogous, showing that you can only understand psychic repercussions on the ICD from the understanding of the effects caused by the disease that led the patient to have the device implanted. One of the patients proved to be adapted to the illness and the ICD, although he has not experienced episodes of shock while the other three patients demonstrated to be somewhere along the adaptation process, having experienced psychic conflicts that influence their adaptive capacity. There is evidence that if psychological interventions are adopted, this adaptation process will occur much more effectively

Master Data Management, Integrace zákaznických dat a hodnota pro business / Master Data Management, Customer Data Integration and value for business

Rais, Filip January 2009 (has links)
This thesis is focused on Master Data Management (MDM), Customer Data Integration (CDI) area and its main domains. It is also a reference to a various theoretical directions that can be found in this area of expertise. It summarizes main aspects, domains and presents different perspectives to referenced principles. It is an exhaustive background research in area of Master Data Management with emphasis on practical use with references on authors experience and opinions. Secondary focus is directed to the field of business value of Master Data Management initiatives. Thesis presents a thought concept for initiations of MDM project. The reason for such a concept is based on current trend, where companies are struggling to determine actual benefits of MDM initiatives. There is overall accord on the subject of necessity of such initiatives, but the struggle is in area of determining actual measureable impact on company's revenue or profit. Since the MDM initiative is more of an enabling function, rather than direct revenue function, the benefit is less straight forward and therefore harder to determine. This work describes different layers and mapping of business requirements through layers for transparent linkage between enabling functions to revenue generating ones. The emphasis is given to financial benefit calculation, measurability and responsibility of business and IT departments. To underline certain conclusions thesis also presents real world interviews with possible stakeholders of MDM initiative within the company. These representatives were selected as key drivers for such an initiative. Interviews map their recognition of MDM and related terms. It also focus on their reasons and expectations from MDM. The representatives were also selected to equally represent business and IT departments, which presents interesting clash of views and expectations.

Application of electrodes with redox mechanisms for the desalination of water / Applicering av elektroder med redoxmekanismer för avsaltning av vatten

Moreno Cerezo, Pablo January 2023 (has links)
Capacitive deionization is a promising technology for purification and desalination of brackish water with great advantages over current technologies due to its low operating cost and high-water recovery ratio. Most of the system studied relies on the adsorption/desorption capacity of activated carbon electrodes due to its high surface area. However, its specific adsorption capacity is limited since the adsorption is predominantly on the surface of the electrodes. In this thesis we propose the use of polyaniline as a chloride-ion adsorption material. Polyaniline is a redox polymer able to accommodate anions in several of its three states when subjected to an external voltage. To this end, we synthesized polyaniline by electrodeposition technique and its electrochemical behavior was studied. A hybrid CDI system was assembled, using PANI as anode material and activated carbon cloth as cathode, showing outstanding adsorption of 37.26 mg/g Cl at current densities of 250 A/g. The energy consumption of this system was of 0.4979 kWh/m3. Its stability was evaluated over 50 cycles with negligible capacity loss. Along with its use in a CDI system, the aim of this thesis was to understand the mechanisms of operation of this material, by means of its physical and electrochemical characterization, as well as its efficiency and stability through the use of this material in capacitive deionization cells.

Master Data Integration hub - řešení pro konsolidaci referenčních dat v podniku / Master Data Integration hub - solution for company-wide consolidation of referrential data

Bartoš, Jan January 2011 (has links)
In current information systems the requirement to integrate disparate applications into cohesive package is greatly accented. While well-established technologies facilitating functional and comunicational integration (ESB, message brokes, web services) already exist, tools and methodologies for continuous integration of disparate data sources on enterprise-wide level are still in development. Master Data Management (MDM) is a major approach in the area of data integration and referrential data management in particular. It encompasses the referrential data integration, data quality management and referrential data consolidation, metadata management, master data ownership, principle of accountability for master data and processes related to referrential data management. Thesis is focused on technological aspects of MDM implementation realized via introduction of centrallized repository for master data -- Master Data Integration Hub (MDI Hub). MDI Hub is an application which enables the integration and consolidation of referrential data stored in disparate systems and applications based on predefined workflows. It also handles the master data propagation back to source systems and provides services like dictionaries management and data quality monitoring. Thesis objective is to cover design and implementation aspects of MDI Hub, which forms the application part of MDM. In introduction the motivation for referrential data consolidation is discussed and list of techniques used in MDI Hub solution development is presented. The main part of thesis proposes the design of MDI Hub referrential architecture and suggests the activities performed in process of MDI Hub implementation. Thesis is based on information gained from specialized publications, on knowledge gathererd by delivering projects with companies Adastra and Ataccama and on co-workers know-how and experience. Most important contribution of thesis is comprehensive view on MDI Hub design and MDI Hub referrential architecture proposal. MDI Hub referrential architecture can serve as basis for particular MDI Hub implementation.
