Observation of b → dγ decays and determination of |Vtd/Vts|

Mohapatra, Debabrata 15 August 2006 (has links)
The flavor changing neutral current process b → dγ is a sensitive probe to the Standard Model of elementary particle physics. Using a sample of 386 × 10⁶ B meson pairs accumulated by the Belle detector at the KEKB e⁺e⁻ collider, we measure the branching fractions for the exclusive modes B⁻ → ρ⁻γ, B̅⁰ → ρ⁰γ and B̅⁰ → ωγ as follows: B(B⁻ → ρ⁻γ) = 0.55 −0.36+0.42−0.08+0.09 B(B̅⁰ → ρ⁰γ) = 1.25 −0.33+0.37−0.06+0.07 B(B̅⁰ → ωγ) = 0.56 −0.27+0.34−0.10+0.05 where the first error on each value is statistical and the second is systematic. Assuming that these three modes are related by isospin conservation rules, we find the combined branching fraction B(B̅ → (ρ,ω)γ) = 1.32 −0.31+0.34−0.090.10. This result is used to determine the ratio of CKM matrix elements, |Vtd/Vts| = 0.199 −0.025+0.026−0.0150.018. / Ph. D.

Measurement of the Partial Branching Fraction for Inclusive Semileptonic B Meson Decays to Light Hadrons B->Xu l nu and an Improved Determination of the Quark-Mixing Matrix Element |V_ub|

Volk, Alexei 22 June 2009 (has links)
This thesis presents an analysis of inclusive semileptonic $B \to X_u e \nu$ decays using approximately 454 million $\Upsilon(4S) \to B \bar{B}$ decays collected during the years 1999 to 2008 with the BABAR detector. The electron energy, $E_e$, and the invariant mass squared of the electron-neutrino pair,$ q^2$, are reconstructed, where the neutrino kinematics is deduced from the decay products of both B mesons. The final hadronic state,$ X_u$, consists of a sum of many hadronic channels, each of which contains at least one $u$ quark. The variables $q^2$ and $E_e$ are then combined to compute the maximum kinematically allowed invariant mass squared of the hadronic system, $s_h^{max}$. Using these kinematic quantities, the partial branching fraction, $\Delta BR(B \to X_u e \nu)$, unfolded for detector effects, is measured to be $\Delta BR(E_e>2.0 GeV, s_h^{max}<3.52 GeV^2) = (3.33 \pm 0.18 \pm 0.21) \times 10^{-4} in the $\Upsilon(4S)$ and \Delta \tilde{\BR}(\tilde E_e>1.9 GeV, \tilde {s}^{max}_{h} < 3.5 GeV^2) = (4.57 \pm 0.24 \pm 0.32) \times 10^{-4} in the $B$ meson rest frames. The quoted errors are statistical and systematic, respectively. The CKM matrix element $|V_{ub}|$ is determined from the measured $\Delta \tilde{\BR}$ using theoretical calculation based on Heavy Quark Expansion. The result is $|V_{ub}| = (4.19 \pm 0.18{}^{+0.26}_{-0.20} {}^{+0.26}_{-0.25}) \times 10^{-3}, where the errors represent experimental uncertainties, uncertainties from HQE parameters and theoretical uncertainties, respectively.

Wilden, Leif 14 October 2002 (has links)
The branching fraction for B -> rho e nu decays and the CKM matrix element |Vub| is measured with semileptonic exclusive B-meson decays using approximately 55 million Upsilon(4S) -> BBbar decays collected during the years 2000 and 2001 with the BABAR detector. The result is Br(B0 -> rho- e+ nu) = (3.39 +- 0.44 +- 0.52 +- 0.60) x 10^-4, and |Vub| = (3.69 +- 0.23 +- 0.27 +0.40-0.59) x 10^-3. The quoted errors are statistical, systematic, and theoretical respectively. These are combined results obtained using five different form-factor models. Individual results are also quoted.

Simard, Martin 11 1900 (has links)
We report the results of a study of the exclusive charmless semileptonic decays, B^+--> êta^(') l^+v and B^0--> pi^- l^+v, undertaken with approximately 464 million BBbar pairs collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the BABAR detector. The analysis uses events in which the signal B decays are reconstructed with a loose neutrino reconstruction technique. We obtain partial branching fractions for B^+--> êta l^+v and B^0--> pi^- l^+v decays in three and twelve bins of q^2, respectively, from which we extract the f_+(q^2) form-factor shapes and the total branching fractions B(B^+--> êta l^+v) = (3.39 +/- 0.46_stat +/- 0.47_syst) x 10^-5 and B(B^0--> pi^- l^+v) = (1.42 +/- 0.05_stat +/- 0.08_syst) x 10^-4. We also measure B(B^+--> êta' l^+v+) = (2.43 +/-0.80_stat +/- 0.34_syst) x 10^-5. We obtain values for the magnitude of the CKM matrix element |V_ub| using three different QCD calculations.

Etude des désintégrations sans charme Bº d,s → h+h′−πº decays dans LHCb / Study of charmless Bº d,s → h+h′−πº decays in LHCb

Roa Romero, Diego Alejandro 24 May 2013 (has links)
This thesis work is about the identification of charmless three-body decays of neutral B mesons with a π0 in the final state (B0d,s → h+h′−π0) through the analysis of a 1.0 fb−1 data sample collected in 2011 by the LHCb experiment at the LHC. Those modes are sensitive to CKM parameters and allow to test Standard Model predictions related to CP violation. Some of them, such as B0 s → K−π+π0 and B0 s → K+K−π0, have not been observed previously. This is the first analysis with energetic π0 in LHCb. To evaluate the detector performance for π0, D∗+ → D0(→ K−π+π0)π+ decays have been selected. This provides a clean and high statistics sample of neutral pions used to study their energy calibration as well as the effectiveness of the π0/γ separation tool of the experiment. Radiative decays are indeed the most dangerous backgrounds for the study of B0 d,s → h+h′−π0 modes. To select B0 d,s → h+h′−π0 events, a dedicated trigger algorithm has been implemented. It complements the standard online selections and significantly improves the efficiency. Offline, obvious backgrounds, mainly from charm decays, are rejected applying simple criteria. The sample is then further purified using a multivariate classifier. At last, information from the ring imaging Cherenkov detectors allows to separate π+π−π0, K±π∓π0 and K+K−π0 final states. A simultaneous fit of the reconstructed B mass spectra in the three subsamples is used to extract the signal yields. It accounts for the different backgrounds remaining as well as for the signal crossfeeds from one subsample to the other. The B0 → π+π−π0, B0 → K+π−π0 and B0 s → K+K−π0 contributions are clearly established. This is the first observation of the B0 s → K+K−π0 decay mode.

Determination of the CKM-matrix element |Vub| from the electron energy spectrum measured in inclusive B -> X u e[Ypsilon] decay with the BABAR detector

Lück, Thomas 11 March 2013 (has links)
This document presents a measurement of the CKM matrix-element Vub in inclusive semileptonic B to Xu e nu events on a dataset of 471 million BB events recorded by the BABAR detector. Inclusive B to Xu e nu decays are selected by reconstructing a high energetic electron (positron). Background suppression is achieved by selecting events with electron (positron) energies near the kinematical allowed endpoint of B to Xu e nu decays. A B to Dstar e nu veto is applied to further suppress background. This veto uses Dstar mesons which have been reconstructed with a partial reconstruction technique.

Measurement and Interpretation of Moments of the Combined Hadronic Mass and Energy Spectrum in Inclusive Semileptonic B-meson Decays / Messung und Interpretation von Momenten der kombinierten hadronischen Massen- und Energieverteilung in inklusiven semileptonischen B-Mesonenzerfällen

Klose, Verena 02 April 2008 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis presents first measurements of moments of the hadronic n_X^2 distribution measured in inclusive semileptonic decays of B mesons to final states containing a charm quark, B->Xc l nu. The variable n_X^2 is a combination of the invariant mass of the charmed meson m_X, its energy in the B-meson rest-frame E_X, and a constant \tilde{\Lambda} = 0.65 GeV, n_X^2 = m_X^2 c^4 - 2 \tilde{\Lambda} E_X + \tilde{\Lambda}^2. The moments <n_X^k> with k=2,4,6 are measured as proposed by theory to constrain assumptions made in the theoretical description of inclusive observables in semileptonic B-meson decays. This description uses Heavy Quark Expansion (HQE), an effective QCD combined with an Operator Product Expansion. The measurement is based on a sample of 231.6 million e+e- -> Y(4S) -> B\bar{B} events recorded with the BABAR experiment at the PEP-II e+e--storage rings at SLAC. We reconstruct the semileptonic decay by identifying a charged lepton in events tagged by a fully reconstructed hadronic decay of the second B meson. Correction procedures are derived from Monte Carlo simulations to ensure an unbiased measurement of the moments of the n_X^2 distribution. All moments are measured requiring minimum lepton momenta between 0.8 GeV/c and 1.9 GeV/c in the rest frame of the B meson. Performing a simultaneous fit to the measured moments <n_X^k> up to order k=6 combined with other measurements of moments of the lepton-energy spectrum in decays B->Xc l nu and moments of the photon-energy spectrum in decays B->Xs gamma, we determine the quark-mixing parameter |V_{cb}|, the bottom and charm quark masses, the semileptonic branching fraction BR(B->X l nu), and four non-perturbative heavy quark parameters. Using HQE calculations in the kinetic scheme up to order 1/m_b^3 we find |V_{cb}| = (41.65 +- 0.43 +- 0.40 +- 0.58) x 10^{-3} and m_b = (4.570 \pm 0.033 \pm 0.043)GeV/c^2, where the first uncertainty refers to experimental contributions, the second to uncertainties in the HQE, and the third to theoretical uncertainties in the calculations of the semileptonic decay rate. All obtained results are consistent with previous determinations. The inclusion of the moments <n_X^6> decreases the uncertainty on the HQE parameters mu_{pi} and rho_{D}. Furthermore, the theoretical treatment of higher order corrections in the HQE used for the moments <m_X^k> has been verified with these new measurements.
