THE FEASIBILITY OF DIRECTED-IMAGINAL MUSIC PSYCHOTHERAPY FOR SELF-AWARENESS FOR INDIVIDUALS WITH SUBSTANCE USE DISORDER

Benonis, Daniel 12 1900 (has links)
This single-session feasibility trial aimed to examine the effects of Directed-Imaginal Music Psychotherapy (DIMP) on self-awareness in relation to change in adults being treated for substance use disorder. DIMP is a two-part protocol. The first part is a live music, receptive intervention in which a trained music therapist plays a specified harmony sequence on guitar accompanied by verbal guidance to promote imagery and sensory experiences in participants. The verbal guidance is based on participant-defined “Comforts” in each of their five primary senses. The music and imagery component was followed by group verbal processing to discuss physical, emotional, or cognitive changes participant’s experience and gauge an understanding of insights into treatment gained by the participants. Participants completed the Self-Awareness Outcomes Questionnaire (SAOQ; Sutton, 2016) before and after the intervention to measure possible change in self-awareness in relation to change in their recovery. The Wilcoxon signed rank test indicated statically significant improvements in self-awareness scores from 3.37 pre-test to 3.77 post-test. Fieldnotes and transcripts from audio recordings were also used in thematic analysis. Deductive themes of Insight, Mindfulness, Reflection, and Rumination were taken from Sutton’s (2016) SAOQ study. Inductive themes of Disconnection/Connection, Safety & Comfort, Independence/Isolation, and Goal Orientation emerged from the qualitative data. Feasibility for implementation was considered through the lenses of adoption, reach fidelity, and sustainability (Pearson et al., 2020). The study found that DIMP is feasible for implementation (Bowen et al., 2009). Considerations for future research and clinical practice were identified. / Music Therapy

Glare, Daylight and View:“Exploratory study of the effect of patterns on glare and view in an indoor environment.”

Nazari, Marzieh January 2019 (has links)
The dilemma of keeping the daylight quality and view to the outside or protecting our eyes from disturbing glare by covering the window is a moment that probably everyone has experienced in their life. Having access to daylight and enjoying the view to the outside when there is not visual comfort has been a problematic issue related to the window in space. Shading devices are designed in different shapes and forms to control glare and also energy consumption inside the space. Using shading covers part of the window and it affects the light quality and view to the outside and can change our perception from architectural space. In this thesis, the main question is how can we protect the indoor space from discomfort glare without covering the whole part of the window by curtain, blinds or shading devices in order to keep daylight quality and view to the outside.Glare is a phenomenon that is related to the viewpoint of observers and in order to study the glare metrics, the data from 140 viewpoints of the observer in 20 different locations in one simulated room were analyzed based on three main factors:1- Glare Metrics2- Light Quality3- ViewThe 20 selected patterns were simulated in [Rhino /Grasshopper/ Diva] software to analyze the glare and daylight metrics in Solstices and Equinoxes. Also, in order to define a parameter for view, one questionnaire was used and the responses from 40 participants were collected and all of the data were evaluated by mathematics and statistics methods. The final aim of the study is to introduce some simple principles for patterns of shadings to provide better-daylit environment and view to the outside with most visual comfort conditions for the user inside the space.

The positive light

Alcalá, Gemma January 2020 (has links)
This Masters Thesis is a response to the personal willingness of obtaining something positive from the global crisis, caused by Covid-19. In such a situation, an understanding of the role of light in domiciles is appropriate not only functionally, but emotionally, as new ways of living in space are introduced. Indeed, flexibility has turned to be a claimed characteristic in the house, as well as access to daylight and outdoor spaces. Those aspects are to be considered positive in the near future. Nevertheless, what can be considered as positive light and the extent to which it is related to flexibility is a factor to study.  How positive light can be achieved is also a factor to consider. Throughout this project, positive light will be defined under the exceptional circumstances of quarantine. The distribution of a survey, a discussion of architectural theories, as well as a study of positive light in my personal home will be carried out in order to gain an insight into its definition.

The Experiences Of Health Care Providers Providing Comfort For Nursing Home Patients At The End Of Life

Baker, Herma 01 January 2010 (has links)
Research shows that healthcare providers (HCPs) are not adequately prepared to provide comfort care for patients who are at the end of life. Since the 1990s, numerous legislative, research, and clinical initiatives have addressed concerns about improving care at the end of life. The purpose of this study was to describe the experiences of HCPs providing comfort for patients in the nursing home who are at the end of life. This study focused on physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses and nurses' aides at a central Florida nursing home. A descriptive qualitative design was done utilizing a focus group discussion, individual interviews, and a self-administered questionnaire. The findings indicated that a lack of facility support, inadequate staffing, inadequate end of life care education, family and patient denial of prognosis, as well as decreased primary care physician involvement affect the delivery of comfort care for patients at the end of life in the nursing home. This study supports the need for end of life education to HCPs and the need for adjustments in staffing to meet the complex needs of patients in the nursing home who are at the end of life. A new finding of this study reflects the use of an angel cart to aid in the provision of comfort care for patients at the end of life. Recommendations for future research were made based on study results

Breastfeeding Effects on Acute Pain Responses During Minor Medical Procedures in Infants

Shakur, Yasmeen 01 January 2020 (has links)
During their very early stages of life, both healthy and ill infants go through painful routine medical procedures. Exposure to repeated painful stimuli early in life is known to have short and long-term adverse effects, particularly if the infant's pain is not well managed. The purpose of this integrative literature review was to investigate the effectiveness of breastfeeding on relieving acute pain in infants undergoing routine painful medical procedures compared to other non-pharmacologic interventions. A literature search was conducted using Cumulative Index to Nursing Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), MEDLINE, APA PsychINFO, Cochrane Database, and Google Scholar databases. The final number of articles meeting inclusion criteria and analyzed in this review was 10. The non-pharmacological interventions for reducing pain responses in infants that were compared to breastfeeding for effectiveness included the use of sweet tasting solutions, music therapy, and environmental comfort measures. Overall, findings indicated that breastfeeding was most effective in reducing pain responses among infants compared to other non-pharmacologic interventions. Further, breastfeeding in conjunction with the other non-pharmacologic interventions provided added benefit to pain reduction. Findings suggest that breastfeeding is a simple, non-pharmacologic intervention that can be used in clinical nursing practice to reduce the pain response of infants during minor medical procedures.

Reviving the Treason Charge

Snyder, Hannah 01 January 2021 (has links)
Can Americans who join terrorist organizations and fight against United States troops be charged with treason? Does the January 6th riot in Washington D.C. constitute “levying war”? Despite ongoing acts of levying war, and providing aid and comfort to enemies, the United States has not had a treason conviction since the 1950's. Courts and prosecutors actively avoid the charge, leading to a substantial lack of case law and legal guidance. Today, legal scholars disagree on how the Treason Clause should be applied. In this thesis, I discuss the disappearance of treason, and analyze opposing views on how the treason charge should be utilized in the twenty-first century. Specifically, I argue that treason holds significant constitutional importance, and should return as a viable charge in criminal law.
