This scientific work is written within the theory of linguocultural types and is dedicated to the research of “businessman” type in English and Russian linguocultures. The research is based on the analyses of 125 abstracts, 80 photographs (40 photographs of Russian businessmen and 40 photographs of British ones), and results of the survey, including 144 answers (104 Russian informants and 40 British informants). The first part of the work deals with the problem of wording the meaning of the term “linguocultural type” and also ways to classify linguocultural types and methods of their investigation. The second part of the work specifies conceptual, figurative-perceptual, and evaluative characteristics of linguocultural type “businessman”. After that modelling of the investigated type and comparison are held in frames of Russian and British cultures. Every aspect is analyzed on the basis of found abstracts and results of the survey due to age and gender brackets. After each paragraph conclusions are made, and similarities and differences are found between Russian and British people. Results of the research can be used for teaching such subjects as cultural linguistics, national studies, intercultural communication, and foreign language.

Substantivkomposita und Sinngebung im Kontext frühmittelalterlicher Wissensvermittlung : Eine kulturanalytisch-linguistische Untersuchung zur Wortbildung bei Notker IIIRaag, Nicolaus Janos January 2016 (has links)
This thesis approaches the question of how nominal compounds as linguistic means contribute to the construction of cultural meaning within the framework of knowledge transfer in the medieval monastic school. The starting point for the study is the semiotic definition of culture, which sees culture as shared models for perceiving, relating and interpreting among members of a social group. Language is seen as the place where cultural meaning is constructed and manifests itself in significant patterns, i.e., patterns of language usage that have meaning due to the fact that they are patterns. The central objective of this study is to reveal such patterns in nominal compounds drawn from Old High German (or rather bilingual hybrid) adaptations of Latin school texts translated, or adapted by Notker III (Labeo). Focus is placed on newly formed compounds, as well as compounds that differ distinctively from their Latin models. Methodologically this study combines the morphosemantic analysis of nominal compounds with a hermeneutic approach interpreting compounds in their textual and cultural context. Three significant patterns were established: (1) explication of implied meaning, (2) summary of complex expressions, and (3) explanatory translation. The first pattern can be observed in cases where the power of compounds to give additional information was utilised, e.g., in order to ensure a certain interpretation of a metaphorical expression. The second pattern demonstrates the capacity of compounds to refer to more complex concepts, expressing underlying syntactic constructions in a more memorisable manner. Finally, recourse was taken to explanatory translation in order to make the concept easier to understand. The three patterns are not necessarily the only patterns used by Notker III (Labeo); rather they are to be seen as an exemplification of the potential of nominal compounds for meaning construction.

Vybrané aspekty sémantiky barev v lidové slovesnosti sebrané v 19. století / Selected Aspects of Colour Semantics in Folk Texts Collected in the 19th CenturyNováková Tomášková, Tereza January 2019 (has links)
The thesis deals with the subject of semantics of colours in the Czech folk texts using theoretical and methodological framework of culturally oriented and cognitive approaches to language. In order to contribute to the research of the colour domain in linguistic picture of the world in Czech, semantic structure of colour concepts is examined using qualitative analysis of the occurrences excerpted from the corpora of the selected compilations of folk songs of the 19th century. The topic of radiance and visual salience of colours and their manifestations in the source material is discussed as well. Furthermore, the thesis examines if conclusions concerning the usage of colour terms in folk texts drawn by the studies based on the folklore of other Slavic languages can be applicable to the Czech material.
