The thesis seeks to uncover making of architecture as a constellation or cluster of elements which assemble to form spaces humans inhabit. In doing so, it explores the architecture of incompleteness, where fragmented elements combine to form a dialogue with their adjacent elements, intensifying the user's encounter with the structure. Plurality of elements is exposed by increasing their number from single to multiple in varying levels of transparency with the surroundings. The subtraction from a volume to reveal the additive quality of the structure is an effort to amplify the role of structural assembly that elevates the act of visual containment. Agglomeration of members and layers is vital to realize architecture. The programmatic aspect of this thesis manifests itself in a resort town where the proposition of three types of cabin, opposing in character, take shape. The relation of architecture with the ground is primarily observed as resting, floating and sunken. This connection is nourished by exploring the orders, rules and patterns offered by the context. It's an act of revealing and concealing clusters of members in action and assembly. / Master of Architecture / Architecture can be realized using materials and resources that are produced and modified artificially or found naturally. Therefore, its reliance on a physical substance is inevitable. The enormous volume of spaces created by the repetition of components in three dimensions is a result of multiplicity of elements. The thesis establishes itself by revitalizing a resort town called Hot Springs, North Carolina by offering different types of lodging experiences in the cabins. Thirteen unique cubes that are scattered across the site interact with the terrain in three different types of dialogues. The uniqueness of the cubes are conceptualized through contextual anomalies, while the placement of the cubes is guided from the history of the site.

The aim of this thesis is to undertake a comprehensive dendroarchaeological-contextual investigation of 35 sites (44 log structures) in Jasper, Banff, and Kootenay National Parks. Through tree-ring analysis and investigations of relevant documents (i.e., archives and interviews), three main objectives are met: 1) an architectural inventory and tree-ring analysis of sampled structures in the three parks; 2) an exploration of remote construction activity in the three parks, in terms of functional, temporal, and spatial distributions, and tree species selection; and 3) a detailed dendroarchaeological-contextual investigation of three structure case studies. The results provide new insights into remote construction activity from the late-nineteenth to early-twentieth century in the three parks. It assists Parks Canada in their attempt to interpret the cultural heritage resources of this area and contributes to the international need to document and explore vernacular architecture.

The primary purpose of this study is to give simple and detailed instructions for building a log cabin by the post-and-beam method. The data were gathered from three sources: (1) library research, (2) interviews with experienced builders of cabins, and (3) personal experience in cabin construction. A step-by-step guide for building a cabin is given in Chapters II and III, which explain in depth how to construct each section of the cabin, from laying the foundation to putting on the finishing touches. It is believed that any serious builder can follow the directions and construct his own log cabin for less than one-third the cost of a similar commercially built cabin.

Something essential in this project is to highlight the spirit of the archipelago. My project is creating spaces where you can experience the calm, the ruff, the warm and the cold. The sea can give such a variety of conditions. It changes with the seasons but it also changes with the weather and can quickly go from still breeze to full storm. It is a place that offers an escape in the same time as it ground you in the purest of realities. I have located my project at Landsort, in the south part of Stockholm archipelago, close to Nynäshamn. This part of the archipelago has a close connection to main land, and also takes you out fast to open sea. On Landsort I have created something I call Örum. In opposite of a Naturum, I want to preserve the possibility to explore the nature rather than preserve the nature itself. I believe the nature will change and the outer archipelago will be harder to visit. With my structures it will be possible to visit & explore Landsort for many years to come.
