Assessing the Function of Irony in Continental Philosophy's Return to Religion: After the Death of God (the Vattimo/Caputo Dialogue)

Kennedy, Robert 08 May 2014 (has links)
John D. Caputo and Gianni Vattimo are two of the main thinkers in continental philosophy’s return to religion. This return is accommodated by the basic theoretical framework of irony, which is predominantly an unspoken determinant upon textual meaning. In this continental sense, irony affirms and negates the subject matter that it speaks about. Adopting this framework, Caputo and Vattimo suggest that a new Christian-irony is desirable to avert a collapse back into the violence that results from metaphysics, either modern or classical, by remaining in deconstruction’s loosely held wavering between theism and atheism. The question that remains to be proven, however, is whether their ironic method of writing is not inadvertently continuing the negative effect of the Nietzschean-Heideggerian paradigm by persisting with the literary style of writing that is intrinsic to it, even while openly refuting it by their affirmative Judeo-Christian surface content.

Una plegaria por lo imposible. Esbozos posmodernos sobre la teodicea de Leibniz

Zegarra Medina, Raúl E. 10 April 2018 (has links)

Cálculo fracionário e as funções de Mittag-Leffler / Fractional calculus and the Mittag-Leffler functions

Teodoro, Graziane Sales, 1990- 24 August 2018 (has links)
Orientador: Edmundo Capelas de Oliveira / Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Matemática Estatística e Computação Científica / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-24T12:52:57Z (GMT). Neste contexto, abordamos a integral fracionária e as derivadas fracionárias, segundo Caputo e segundo Riemann-Liouville. Na aplicação resolvemos a equação diferencial associada ao problema do oscilador harmônico fracionário, utilizando a transformada de Laplace e a derivada fracionária segundo Caputo / Abstract: The fractional calculus, which is the nomenclature used to the non-integer order calculus, has important applications due to its direct involvement in problem resolution and discussion in many fields, such as mathematics, physics, engineering, economy, applied sciences and many others. In this sense, we studied the fractional integral and fractional derivates: one proposed by Caputo and the other by Riemann-Liouville. Among the fractional calculus's functions, one of most important is the Mittag-Leffler function. This function naturally occurs as the solution for fractional order differential equations with constant coeficients. Due to the importance of the Mittag-Leffler functions, various properties and generalizations are presented in this dissertation. We also presented an application in fractional calculus, in which we solved the differential equation associated the with fractional harmonic oscillator. To solve this fractional oscillator equation, we used the Laplace transform and Caputo fractional derivate / Mestrado / Matematica Aplicada / Mestra em Matemática Aplicada

Derivada fracionária e as funções de Mittag-Leffler / Fractional derivative and the Mittag-Leffler functions

Oliveira, Daniela dos Santos de, 1990- 26 August 2018 (has links)
Orientador: Edmundo Capelas de Oliveira / Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Matemática Estatística e Computação Científica / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-26T00:53:38Z (GMT). This work presents a study about the one- two- and three-parameters Mittag-Leffler functions. We show that the Mittag-Leffler function is a generalization of the exponential function and present its relations to other special functions beta, gamma, incomplete gamma and error functions. We also approach fractional integration, which is necessary to introduce the concept of fractional derivatives. Two formulations for the fractional derivative are studied, the formulations proposed by Riemann-Liouville and by Caputo. We investigate which classical derivatives rules can be extended to these formulations. Finally, as an application, using the Laplace transform methodology, we discuss the fractional differential equation associated with the harmonic oscillator problem / Mestrado / Matematica Aplicada / Mestra em Matemática Aplicada

Caputo on Heidegger and ethics

Harvey, Sharon January 2002 (has links)
Evaluation of Heidegger's ethical thinking or "originary ethics" is necessary due to recent ethical questions resulting from Heidegger's biography. According to John D. Caputo, Heidegger does not care for the "other". This thesis analyzes Caputo's basis for those claims along with his rejection of Heidegger's notion that our relation to poetizing is needful for an ethics in a scientific, technological age. Heidegger's ethics of non-objectification offers hope with regard not only to the domination and oppression of humans but also for non-humans as well. Heidegger's understanding of 'technique qua metaphysics' is important for addressing the political claims of Caputo.

Vietnam war literature: reflections of the sustained tension between politics, history, morality and the effect of war on human nature.

Melissakis, Catherine-Jeanette 01 October 2007 (has links)
Vietnam War literature is a reflection of a sustained tension between politics and history on the one hand and morality and the effect of the war on human nature on the other hand. Although the authors under discussion urge the reader to forget the political, moral and historical milieu of the Vietnam War, it is impossible to separate the war from those three factors and by extension, the literature that stems from it. I have chosen Philip Caputo’s A Rumor of War (1977) and Robert Mason’s Chickenhawk (1983) because I think they represent, perhaps in the simplest and least obtrusive way, the voices of 55 000 men whose names appear on a black, granite wall in Washington. The authors chose to write their respective memoirs for the Everyman who died in, or lived through, the aberration that was Vietnam. Through their reconstruction of the war and their experiences, they keep the demand for recognition of those who fought (whether morally sanctioned or not) in Vietnam for their country. While American society tried to force the war from its psyche because so many of them thought it was unjust, immoral and unnecessary, authors like Caputo and Mason demanded that the nation examine itself on the whole and reconsider its political endeavours. But perhaps one of the starkest revelations is their portrayal of the corruption of innocence, loyalty and idealism of those soldiers who represented their country abroad.

Hybrid functions in Fractional Calculus

Mashayekhi, Somayeh 14 August 2015 (has links)
In this dissertation, a new numerical method for solving the fractional dynamical systems, is presented. We first introduce Riemann-Liouville fractional integral operator for hybrid functions. Then we will show the spectral accuracy of the present method for solving fractional-order differential equations, and we will extend the present method for solving nonlinear fractional integro-differential equations, fractional Bagley-Torvik equation, distributed order fractional differential equations, two-dimensional fractional partial differential equations, and fractional optimal control problems. In all cases, we will show the rate of convergence is more than some existing numerical methods which were used to solve these kind of problems in the literature. Illustrative examples are included to demonstrate the validity and applicability of the technique.
