Factors influencing career choice among students at the University of Zululand

A mini-dissertation submitted to the Faculty of Education in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Education in the Department of Educational Psychology and Special Education at the University of Zululand, 2016 / This study examined the factors influencing career choice. The objectives of this study were to determine factors influencing career choice among the University of Zululand students. Secondly, to find out whether there are any relations between career choice and the following variables; gender, age and race and, finally, to determine the agreement among ranks assigned by students to social institutions. The methodology of the study comprised of field and case study research design. SPSS was used to analyse data which consisted of 200 participants who correctly responded to the questionnaires. The sample was selected from the first year students at the University Of Zululand (UNIZULU). The findings indicated that mothers and the media played a role in influencing students in their career choice. Students agreed that the home played the greatest role in choosing their careers. Most students had a positive perception of their chosen career. Finally, variables such as age, gender and race did not play a significant role in choosing a career amongst this particular group of students.

Moteru galimybes siekti karjeros svietime / Women‘s opportunities to achieve the caree in Education

Darbe analizuojamos moterų galimybės švietime. Empirinio tyrimo pagalba siekiama atsakyti į klausimus: ar karjeros galimybes įtakoja asmens lytis? Ar švietimas laikomas specifine sritimi, kurioje moterims sudarytos labiau (menkiau) palankios galimybės siekti karjeros? Tyrimą aktualizuoja pastaruoju metu itin opus lygių lyčių galimybių klausimas. Nors tarptautiniai ir teisės aktai deklaruoja lygias lyčių galimybes, visgi Lietuvoje išlieka lyčių atskirties problema. Nežiūrint į tai, kad moterų išsilavinimo rodikliai didesni, labai aukšto išsilavinimo moterys retai pasiekia mokslo aukštumų. Taip pat egzistuoja profesinių veiklos sričių skirstymas į tradiciškai moteriškas ir vyriškas. Tyrimo tikslas – atskleisti, kaip moterys vertina galimybes švietime, identifikuoti svarbiausias problemas. Tyrimo rezultatai parodė, kad mažiau nei pusė rezpondenčių laiko, kad moterys turi vienodas galimybes siekti karjeros visose srityse. Tai rodo gana didelius socialinės atskirties rodiklius, moterų skeptišką požiūrį į savo galimybes ar nepasitikėjimą savo jėgomis. Beveik ketvirtadalis respondenčių darbe patyrusios diskriminaciją dėl lyties. Respondenčių dauguma (60 proc.) švietimą išskiria kaip labiau ar labiausiai palankią moterų karjerai realizuoti. Beveik pusė respondenčių nurodė egzistuojant tradiciškai moteriškas ir vyriškas profesijas, prie pirmųjų dažniausiai priskiriamas švietimas, prie antrųjų - politika. With the help of empirical research it is tried to answer the question if the sex of a person effects caree opportunities. Also, there is a question if education is more or less beneficial sphere for women to achieve caree. The problem of equal rights for both sexes is very urgent nowadays. Although international legitimate acts regulate equal rights for both sexes, it is still a problem in Lithuania. Despite the fact that education of women is better, those with the highest results do not achieve the top of caree in science. There is also a devision between male and female jobs. The aim of the research is to reveal how women evaluate their opportunities in Education ,also, to identify the most urgent problems. The results of the research show that less than half of respondents think that women have the same opportunities for caree prospects in every sphere of life. It can be proved by social separation mark, female sceptical attitude towards caree prospects and self – inconfidence. Almost ¼ of respondents experienced descrimination at work. The majority of respondents 60 per cent assume than education is more beneficial sphere for them. Half of the respondents assume that there is a devision between male and female professions. High-quality education requires high-quality teachers. Many countries including the Czech Republic struggle with consistent recruitment of good and motivated candidates to choose a career in education. Low percentage of new and young teachers intending to make teaching their lifelong career is also noticeable. This thesis will analyse and evaluate different teacher training approaches, specialist training routes in particular, with regard to their efficiency in acquisition of new applicants and maintenance of motivation throughout a lifelong career in education. This thesis will infer the efficiency of each teacher training system by a comparative analysis of teacher training systems in Finland and The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. It’s the 'digital nomadism'. The term is used to name people traveling while working remotely. This study aims to raise the decisive factors that enable the life project designed by Brazilian 'digital nomads'. Starting from a theoretical framework discussing work flexibility, this research explored the profiles of these individuals, their motivations and how they enable supposedly freer lifestyle and working mode. The reports were obtained through interviews with sixteen professionals, freelancers or entrepreneurs, which, after a content analysis, showed a disapproval of the romantic discourse around the 'digital nomadism', despite the confirmation of the increased sense of freedom. It was noted how the Brazilian 'digital nomads' develop their own lifestyle. / Um novo estilo de vida e de trabalho vem chamando a atenção nas redes sociais digitais e nos meios de comunicação em geral. É o 'nomadismo digital'. O termo é usado para se referir a pessoas que viajam enquanto trabalham remotamente. Este estudo tem como objetivo levantar o conjunto de fatores que se mostram decisivos para a viabilidade do projeto de vida idealizado pelos 'nômades digitais' brasileiros. Partindo de um referencial teórico que discute a flexibilização do trabalho, explorou-se os perfis desses indivíduos, suas motivações e a maneira como buscam viabilizar um estilo de vida e uma modalidade de trabalho supostamente mais livres. Os relatos foram obtidos por meio de entrevistas com dezesseis profissionais, freelancers ou empreendedores, que, após uma análise de conteúdo, evidenciaram uma crítica ao discurso romântico que envolve o 'nomadismo digital', apesar de confirmarem um aumento na sensação de liberdade. Observou-se de que maneira o 'nômade digital' brasileiro desenvolve um estilo de vida próprio.
