Stokely Carmichael: from freedom now to black power.

This research was designed to examine the transformation of Stokely Carmichael from a reformist in the Civil Rights Movement to a militant in the Black Power Movement due to experiences which he encountered while an organizer in the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). The three factors which Stokely Carmichael, as well as some of his corroborators in SNCC, spoke most of were soured relationships with white liberals, the ineffectiveness of moral appeals to the government and white southerners, and the significance of black nationalist politics These factors contributed to Carmichael's shift in ideology and caused many members of SNCC to follow him. The research suggests that Stokely Carmichael and his comrades in SNCC made the transformation to Black Power due to their disappointment with the results of civil rights tactics. However, due mostly to repression fiom the government, they were never able to move past ideological explanations to actually implementing a program The African-American community made the transformation in much the same way that Carmichael and SNCC did Self-pride and a self-definition became prevalent topics of discussion in the African-American community. However, the psychological gains did not cross over into their economic and political lives There was a definite interest in black nationalist politics in the African-American community However, again, any efforts to mobilize the African-American community into a powehl force working for its own self-interest were squashed by the FBI who sought to eliminate any potential black militant leaders.

Novel Methods for Primality Testing and Factoring

From the time of the Greeks, primality testing and factoring have fascinated mathematicians, and for centuries following the Greeks primality testing and factorization were pursued by enthusiasts and professional mathematicians for their intrisic value. There was little practical application. One example application was to determine whether or not the Fermat numbers, that is, numbers of the form F;, = 2'" + 1 were prime. Fermat conjectured that for all n they were prime. For n = 1,2,3,4, the Fermat numbers are prime, but Euler showed that F; was not prime and to date no F,, n 2 5 has been found to be prime. Thus, for nearly 2000 years primality testing and factorization was largely pure mathematics. This all changed in the mid 1970's with the advent of public key cryptography. Large prime numbers are used in generating keys in many public key cryptosystems and the security of many of these cryptosystems depends on the difficulty of factoring numbers with large prime factors. Thus, the race was on to develop new algorithms to determine the primality or otherwise of a given large integer and to determine the factors of given large integers. The development of such algorithms continues today. This thesis develops both of these themes. The first part of this thesis deals with primality testing and after a brief introduction to primality testing a new probabilistic primality algorithm, ALI, is introduced. It is analysed in detail and compared to Fermat and Miller-Rabin primality tests. It is shown that the ALI algorithm is more efficient than the Miller-Rabin algorithm in some aspects. The second part of the thesis deals with factoring and after looking closely at various types of algorithms a new algorithm, RAK, is presented. It is analysed in detail and compared with Fermat factorization. The RAK algorithm is shown to be significantly more efficient than the Fermat factoring algorithm. A number of enhancements is made to the basic RAK algorithm in order to improve its performance. The RAK algorithm with its enhancements is known as IMPROVEDRAK. In conjunction with this work on factorization an improvement to Shor's factoring algorithm is presented. For many integers Shor's algorithm uses a quantum computer multiple times to factor a composite number into its prime factors. It is shown that Shor's alorithm can be modified in a way such that the use of a quantum computer is required just once. The common thread throughout this thesis is the application of factoring and primality testing techniques to integer types which commonly occur in public key cryptosystems. Thus, this thesis contributes not only in the area of pure mathematics but also in the very contemporary area of cryptology.

This thesis is a study of nineteenth and twentieth century faith theology and praxis, seeking to determine a balanced, healthy faith that is both sound in theology and effective in practice, Part 1 presents a history and sources of Faith Teaching and Practices. It first looks historically at the roots of later faith teaching and practice by presenting a sampling of teachings on faith from early church fathers, reformers, mystics, and Pietists. These form the foundation for the movements of faith in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries-the classic faith teaching, followed by the modern faith movement and leaders. Part 2 deals with the foundational issues of faith teaching and practice: the relationship of faith to the supernatural, the concept of the inheritance of the believer and the practice of claiming the promises of God, the nature of faith, and the authority of the believer and its inferences for faith praxis. Part 3 investigates seven major theological issues of faith teaching and practice: faith as a law and force, the object and source of faith, the relationship of faith and the will of God, distinguishing between a logos and a rhema word of God, the concepts of revelation and sense knowledge, the doctrine of healing in the atonement, the question of evidence of the baptism in the Holy Spirit. Part 4 examines major practical issues of faith teaching and practice about which controversy swirls: positive mental attitude and positive confession; issues of discernment in acting upon impressions, voices, revelations, and "words from the Lord;" questions of faith regarding sickness and healing, death, doctors and medicine; the relationships between sickness, suffering, healing, and sanctification; and prosperity. Part 5 reflects upon these issues and comes to final conclusions regarding: the role of hermeneutics in determining faith theology and praxis, how to handle unanswered prayers and apparent failures of faith, the seeming paradox and tension between claiming one's inheritance and dying to self, a summary of practical conclusions for exercise of healthy faith, and final conclusions and recommendations on developing a sound theology and practice of faith for the twenty-first century. / Philosophy, Practical & Systematic Theology / D.Th.
