Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / In 1998, D.T. Max wrote his article, “The Carver Chronicles,” about the manuscripts Gordon Lish sold to the Lilly Library at Indiana University. The public was made aware of Lish’s heavy editing of Raymond Carver’s short stories—both in early story form and, later, in book collection form. His heaviest editing was during Carver’s first two major story collections, Will You Please Be Quiet, Please? (1976), and What We Talk About When We Talk About Love (1981). I discuss three stories, “What’s in Alaska?” and “Fat,” from the first major collection, and “What We Talk About When We Talk About Love” from the second major collection. For this last story, we will separate Lish’s editorial vision from Carver’s original authorship by comparing the published book text with Carver’s original story, “Beginners”—two versions, one story. The stories were examined to understand Lish’s editorial motives. To generate a deeper understanding of their textual visions, a critical analysis will evaluate their differences. The stories will first be analyzed in the state they existed before Lish’s changes, and then a second analysis will pinpoint Lish’s major editorial changes and show how they affected Carver’s original vision. The analysis will provide a foundation for discovering a final product understood as a combination of two visions, Carver’s original authorial vision and Lish’s editorial vision. The basis for future Carver studies is to separate these men’s work. Carver’s authorial intent becomes paramount in the investigation for finding the true Carver through critical and textual analysis. Their two distinct and separate visions affect how contemporary Carver studies critically examine his work. To understand Carver textually is to get at his original intent, to illuminate his true vision, separate from Lish’s edits, in order to open up a new perspective and understanding of Carver’s emotional depth and expansiveness. Denna studie erbjuder en litterär analys av gestaltandet av sexualitet i den amerikanske författaren Rymond Carvers novell "So much water so close to home". Analysen lyfter bland annat fram den obligatoriska heterosexualiteten som den teoretiseras av Adrienne Rich och hur manlig kontroll av kvinnans sexualitet inom den heterosexuella institutionen tar sig uttryck i texten.Utöver det undersöks i analysen vilka principer som kan anses ligga bakom konstrueringen av sexualitet i novellen samt hur dessa tar sig uttryck. Den aspekten av analysen tar avstamp i Judith Butlers teori om diskursivt skapade kön och genus samt den heterosexuella matrisen som utgångspunkt för all sexuell åtrå.

This is a result of research on the missionary activities of the Rev. Marcus Ellsworth Carver and his contributing to the insertion Protestantism in the city of Manaus. Deriving from his imaginary world and its representations, presenting him as the first Protestant missionary to establish in city of Manaus of activities the preaching, reading and public the Bible teaching, which culminated the foundation of Bethesda Mission and the Amazonense Evangelical Church. In 1908, when he returned to the United States, leaves church to give leadership to Pr. Juvêncio Paulo de Mello. In order to we analyze his life trajectory that we adopted research methodology the historiographical approach micro-history, history of imaginary and the historical biography. We underline that for Carver the instruments used in evangelization Protestant missionary, the Bible and songs, are very important. Demonstrating that the Protestant message polarizes the world in pure and impure, between sacred and profane. / Esta dissertação apresenta o relato da inserção do protestantismo na cidade de Manaus (AM), entre os anos de 1888 e 1944. É resultado de pesquisa sobre a atividade missionária do Rev. Marcus Ellsworth Carver e sua contribuição para a formação de uma cultura evangélica oriunda de seu imaginário e de suas representações de mundo, apresentando-o como primeiro missionário protestante a estabelecer na cidade de Manaus atividades de pregação, leitura e ensino público da Bíblia, o que culminou na fundação da Missão Bethesda e da Egreja Evangélica Amazonense. Em 1908, ao retornar para os Estados Unidos, deixa a Igreja sob a direção do Pr. Juvêncio Paulo de Mello. Para analisarmos sua trajetória de vida e atuação adotamos como metodologia de pesquisa as abordagens historiográficas da micro-história, história do imaginário e a biografia histórica. É interessante destacar que para Carver os instrumentos utilizados na evangelização missionária protestante, a Bíblia e os cânticos, são muito importantes. Demonstrando que a mensagem protestante dualista do mundo em puro e impuro, entre sagrado e profano.
