Bra och opålitlig : Attityder till och användning av Wikipedia på högstadiet / Good and unreliable : Attitudes To and Usage of Wikipedia in Secondary School

Tilhon, Fredrik A. January 2014 (has links)
This thesis presents a descriptive case study of a Swedish secondary school that sought out to investigate what status Wikipedia has at secondary schools today. In order to do that surveys answered by teachers and students were used and student essays were analysed. Geography was used to illustrate the school’s education. The mainly used sources were examinations of the encyclopaedia’s quality, similar studies of Wikipedia in education and reports from the Swedish National Agency for Education. The study shows that there are different attitudes toward Wikipedia both among teachers and among students that focus on different advantages and disadvantages. Students consider Wikipedia to be good while they also distrust the information that could potentially have been edited by anyone. Teachers tolerate Wikipedia but emphasise that students must use source criticism while using the information. A majority of the students do not disclose Wikipedia as a utilized source in essays. Better education in using websites of Wikipedia’s kind is needed in schools.

Central Solar Heating Plants with Seasonal Storage for Residential Applications in Canada: A Case Study of the Drake Landing Solar Community

Wamboldt, JASON 03 February 2009 (has links)
In Canada, 20% of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions result from burning fossil fuels to heat homes, buildings, and water. Solar thermal technologies convert the sun’s energy into emission-free heat. The Drake Landing Solar Community (DLSC) in Okotoks, Alberta uses a Central Solar Heating Plant (CSHP) with Seasonal Storage to achieve an astounding annual reduction of 89 % in fossil fuel consumption and more than 5 tonnes in GHG emissions per home. This thesis examines: (1) the role for solar thermal technologies in Canada; and (2) what social, economical, and environmental factors are critical to the implementation and ultimate success of the DLSC. The former was examined through a literature review and the latter through a qualitative case study. Data was collected from published articles, media reports, conference proceedings, and in-person interviews in Okotoks. International markets have shown strong solar thermal growth, yet Canada lags significantly despite its powerful solar resources and readily available technology. Europe has demonstrated that strong policies with ambitious targets have a critical role in the implementation of solar technologies. A review of recent public opinion polls demonstrates Canadians value the environment and would favour such policy developments. The case study sought to understand the roles and motivations of the municipality, home builder group, and homeowners. The municipality exhibited tremendous leadership when it embarked on a path towards sustainability that included controlled growth based on ecological limitations and investment in solar thermal technology for municipal buildings. The Federation of Canadian Municipalities was instrumental in exposing Okotoks and the home builder group to the CSHP successes in Europe. The flexibility and innovation of the home builder group provided conventionally-styled homes, which were able to seamlessly incorporate the technologies of the DLSC. For the homeowners, critical components of the success of the project included: a means to participate in environmental change, increased community cohesion due to aligned values; and price stability for their heating costs. Additionally, all of the homeowners interviewed stated that they would be willing to pay extra to support the technology, which indicates that future projects may require less subsidization. / Thesis (Master, Environmental Studies) -- Queen's University, 2009-02-03 14:08:18.825

Conceptualizing Community Development from an Occupational Therapy Perspective

LAUCKNER, Heidi-Michelle 04 March 2010 (has links)
Despite our theoretical commitment to community development (CD) approaches in occupational therapy, current practice models focus on individual interventions, rather than identifying how occupational therapists (OTs) can contribute at a community level. Consequently, OTs attempting to work with communities may not have clear guidance on methods of community engagement or strategies for addressing community level issues. This research examined three cases of OTs working in CD in different regions of Canada in order to 1) generate in-depth interpretive case descriptions of CD practice; and 2) conceptualize CD from the perspective and practices of occupational therapy. Data collection in each case occurred over three weeks and included approximately 30 hours of observations, document reviews and 14 interviews with health professionals and program participants. Constructivist grounded theory informed data analysis. The conceptual framework generated from the cross-case analysis describes the context of CD in which the OTs bridged the health and community sectors. The OTs were in community-focused positions located within regional health authorities. The OTs strategically used both professional and personal self to enable more equitable power sharing between health services, community agencies and consumers, creating opportunities for meaningful engagement with and in communities. Four main CD strategies contributed to this power shift: 1) building consumer and community capacity, 2) nurturing community partnerships, 3) influencing the health care system, and 4) linking sectors and resources. These OTs focused on a set of core values while drawing on their professional experiences. Individual, organizational and community-level changes resulted from these CD initiatives. The conceptualizations developed in this study can inform the practice of OTs by identifying potential CD strategies for enabling occupations with communities and sensitizing OTs to historical contextual tensions and power inequities. From this, the applicability of current occupational therapy models to communities can be extended, enhancing reflexive CD practice. / Thesis (Ph.D, Rehabilitation Science) -- Queen's University, 2010-03-04 13:35:42.337

A Model for Run-time Measurement of Input and Round-off Error

Meng, Nicholas Jie 25 September 2012 (has links)
For scientists, the accuracy of their results is a constant concern. As the programs they write to support their research grow in complexity, there is a greater need to understand what causes the inaccuracies in their outputs, and how they can be mitigated. This problem is difficult because the inaccuracies in the outputs come from a variety of sources in both the scientific and computing domains. Furthermore, as most programs lack a testing oracle, there is no simple way to validate the results. We define a model for the analysis of error propagation in software. Its novel combination of interval arithmetic and automatic differentiation allows for the error accumulated in an output to be measurable at runtime, attributable to individual inputs and functions, and identifiable as either input error, round-off error, or error from a different source. This allows for the identification of the subset of inputs and functions that are most responsible for the error seen in an output and how it can be best mitigated. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our model by analyzing a small case study from the field of nuclear engineering, where we are able to attribute the contribution of over 99% of the error to 3 functions out of 15, and identify the causes for the observed error. / Thesis (Master, Computing) -- Queen's University, 2012-09-24 14:12:25.659

Att leda i förändring : – En fallstudie av intern styrning under en större förändringsprocess / To lead through change : – A case study of the internal management during a major organizational change

Nordman, Tomas, Olsson, Hannah January 2013 (has links)
PostNord AB is a company that in recent decades has faced many challenges becuase of the changes in market demands evolving from the reformation of the Swedish Postal Service. The purpose of this study is to investigate an organization’s internal management during a major reorganization. The focus of this paper is the current process in which PostNord is reconstructing their facilities of distribution for parcels and goods in the Stockholm area. To reach our aims for this paper we conducted a number of interviews, which in turn has been supported by the company's public and internal documents. Through the use of a theoretical framework based on new institutionalism and organizational communication emerges an understanding of the company's internal management. Based on our interpretations we draw the conclusion that PostNord is an organisation that will continue to thrive with their abillity to adapt and make rational decisions in a continously changing environment.
