The objective of this study is to understand Fernando de Castro's (1572-1642?) concept of Reason of State, from the analysis of his work: Verdadera Razon de Estado (1616). The study emphasizes how the Logroñes treatisewriter guides the conduct of rulers, highlighting the permissiveness and restrictions of his Theory of the Reason of State. Anchored in the method of Quentin Skinner – as the English historian presents in the Foundations of Modern Political Thought – this is an attemptto trace the origins of the Reason of State concept, as well as to understand the relationship of the work of Alvía de Castro with the intellectuals of his time. In a complementary manner, the study analyzes the way in which Alvía de Castro interprets the works of Aristotle, Cicero, Seneca, and Tacitus, and the importance of these authors in formulating his Theory of the Reason of State.

Projeções do romantismo pelas asas de um condor: a presença hugoana em poemas da obra de Castro Alves / Romanticism projections through the wings of a condor: the presence of Vicror Hugo in poems by Castro Alves

Cleonice Ferreira de Sousa 05 September 2011 (has links)
Considering the relationship between Brazil and France of the nineteenth century, as well as, the great importance of Castro Alves and Victor Hugo to the literature of both countries, the present work aimed to investigate the presence of Victor Hugo in the poems by Castro Alves. Firstly, we have carefully analyzed the selected poems in order to identify the reason why the Brazilian poet had used a Victor Hugo reference. Secondly, we have developed a comparison between the poems from Castro Alves and Victor Hugo so as to clarify the specific function of these references in each text. The main object of investigation relied on the following question: Was Castro Alves influenced by the wizard of the French poetry or had he used Hugos text for his own convenience? In order to find an answer for that question, we have analyzed the processes of assimilation of the Brazilian poet, revealing the meaning of Alves style. The analysis was based on the intertextuality theory and was a great contribution to the studies in compared literature, in the sense that it has widen the range of information about the meaning of Victor Hugo in the work of Castro Alves.

Sanchez Nuñez, Elizet January 2024 (has links)
Objective: To determine the factors associated with anemia in children from 6 to 36 months at the Toribia Castro Health Center, Lambayeque 2020. Methodology: The study was of type analytical observational with a cross-sectional design, the population consisted of 1046 children from 6 to 36 months treated at the Health Center; Taking into account an expected frequency of 40.1%, a sample of 273 children was calculated, who were selected through simple random sampling. In the statistical analysis, the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test was used in order to verify the normal distribution for the quantitative variables of the data. In the other hand, absolute and relative frequencies were presented for qualitative variables. Chi-square and Fisher tests were used for bivariate analysis. Results: The sample size was 257, the frequency of anemia was 54.5%; 50% of them were less than or equal to 10 months old with an interquartile range between 7 and 12 months. In the bivariate analysis, the variables gestational anemia, consumption of foods with iron and the educational level of the guardian turned out to be statistically significant (P<0.05). In relation to clinical characteristics, it was found that 64.2% of them fit their CRED controls, 89.9% receive iron supplements and there is no significant difference in anemia when it comes to immunizations, nutritional status, EDAS, respiratory or parasitic infections. It was also shown that there is no statistically significant difference between anemia in children from 6 to 36 months and socioeconomic, sociodemographic factors and gestational characteristics of the mother. Conclusions: The frequency of anemia was 54.5%, with mild anemia being the most common type; associated factors were gestational anemia, insufficient consumption of foods rich in iron and the guardian’s educational level. Children whose mothers had gestational anemia are 34% more likely to have anemia; likewise, children who consume food rich in iron daily are 47% less likely to present anemia in comparison with those who consume such foods every two days.

Deconstructing an Icon: Fidel Castro and Revolutionary Masculinity

Butler, Krissie 01 January 2012 (has links)
The goal of this project is to investigate the way in which various representations of Fidel Castro, between the years 1957-1965, have left an indelible mark on Cuba, transforming its landscape, I argue, through gendered means and conscious strategies. Thus it is less concerned with Fidel as an historical person than with examining with a gendered lens the ways in which he has been represented in foundational photographs, interviews, songs, and texts (both narrative and poetry as well as blogs). Drawing from theories of masculinity, which conceive masculinity as both a social construction and material body, my dissertation explores the ways in which these representations make visible a gendered body, mapping definitions of masculinity on Fidel, which are intimately linked to power. These constructions of Fidel’s masculinity, which are portrayed as hegemonic and a legitimating feature of patriarchal control, are a central feature of Fidel’s political authority and the Revolution’s hegemonizing project to shape Revolutionary men and women. I argue that representations of Fidel frequently invite a gendered encounter between the Comandante and his followers, resulting in the production of gendered Revolutionary subjects. The present study adds to current scholarship by shedding light on the ways in which gender foregrounds politics by problematizing the ways in which men are often at the center of political discourse. By decoding the foundations of Fidel’s “gendered” power, we find it to be a construction whose maintenance depends on the body’s ability to conform to hegemonic definitions of masculinity, thus reinforcing rather than Revolutionizing masculine paradigms of authority.

The US-Cuba relations in the early sixties, the nineties and the recent reconciliationprocess : And the reciprocal effects on Russia, Canada and the Vatican.

Mantovani, Riccardo January 2016 (has links)
The US-Cuba relations have been problematic for half a century; however, in December 2014, both countries announced the restoration of their bilateral ties. Over the decades, these relations have also had reciprocal effects on other countries like Russia, Canada and the Vatican. First of all, the thesis provides a brief historical background of the US-Cuba relations from 1898 to 1959 to understand their context before the Cuban Revolution. It then examines the main happenings of the US-Cuba relationship and its reciprocal effects on Moscow, Ottawa and the Holy See during three distinct time periods: the early sixties, the nineties and from 2008 to the present. In order to do this, the study is divided in three case studies, one for each interval, and analyses through the help of the realist, defensive realist and liberal theories the actions taken by these five countries to face the developments of the US-Cuba relations. It finds that Havana’s foreign policy has always been driven by the same wish for the survival of its revolution, the US still aims at changing the Cuban government although it is gradually reducing the sanctions against it, while Russia, Canada and the Vatican have basically kept unchanged their approach toward Cuba throughout the decades. Finally, the recent US-Cuba thaw is not completed yet because these two countries still have to tackle some crucial issues.
