Development of linguistic and cognitive aspects of the understanding of similarity and differenceMacDonald, Theresa January 1982 (has links)
This thesis explores various aspects of children's understanding of similarity and difference and of the terms 'same' and 'different'. Understanding of 'same' appeared to be good but there was some evidence that it might not be complete. Understanding of 'different' was clearly inferior to that of 'same' and some children misinterpreted it as meaning 'same', this being supported by an experiment looking at interpretations of 'same', 'different' and a nonsense word, following Carey. Awareness of similarity and difference was investigated in several experiments. Subjects were required to give a similarity or a difference between two items, either named or pictured, in experiments developed from Claparede's work; they had to select from an array of items one either the same as or different from a target item and to justify that choice; and they had to judge whether two items were the same or not or were different or not in an experiment similar to one devised by Vurpillot. The children found more difficulty with similarity than with difference. It was suggested that similarity was typically handled in a holistic fashion, by a process of analogy, while difference was treated by analysis into component parts. The ability to analyse similarity developed with age. If similarity is not analysed into component points, these points cannot be mentioned in responses. An information-processing model of awareness was used to explain perseverative responses and the giving of differences when similarities were requested. It was suggested that these resulted in part from a failure to make transitions in awareness between different levels appropriately.

Among the various hypotheses suggested in the field of Social Sciences to explain this phenomenon, it will be highlighted for this master's in Linguistics dissertation: i-) the constitution of the symbolic field in which a neoliberal ethics of consumption is not only legitimated but also stimulated; ii-) the capacity of symbolic exploitation, by its leaders, of the quotidian problems faced by most part of the urban Brazilian population. In the face of these hypotheses, where language is the protagonist, one of the motivations for the development of this text lies in the fact that, until now, there is no detailed study on the role of linguistic practices in the construction of the attached senses of their proper symbolic field. For this reason, our investigation has as its main objective to delimitate the function and explain the emergence of textual mechanisms of referential construction, the metaphorical recategorizations, on the context of neopentecostal rhetoric. This choice is justified over the hypothesis that this mechanism is very efficient in the persuasive act, making possible the use of biblical metaphors on the comprehension of the causes, and some possible solutions, to the adversities imposed by a neoliberal quotidian. Keeping these considerations in mind, the theoretical and methodological inscription here adopted is social-cognitive, of which the basic postulate refers to the inseparability between society and cognition, and has textual-interactive inclination, of which the basic premise is founded around a non specular relation between language and the world, giving rise to a social model of cognition in which the role of language is not merely representative, but constitutive. In this frame, the analyzed corpus is composed by ten neopentecostal churches cults: five from the The Universal Church and other five from the International Church of God's Grace. To interpret the data extracted from this corpus, the metaphorical recategorizations are firstly discussed in the religious context of the enunciation - relative, mainly, to the themes' approach in each cult - and, then, interpreted on the light of the larger social context of composition of the neopentecostalism. With that, it is showed that these mechanisms are fundamental to the constitution of the neopentecostal rethoric argumentative axis, here treated under the form of "metaphorical niches", a set of metaphorical superordenated propositions under which is possible to establish with greater precision the argumentative orientation. Finally, it is showed that the metaphorical recategorizations singularity, as a specific form of senses construction, allows a rediscussion over fundamental concepts to the textual-interactive analysis as a whole / Mestrado / Linguistica / Meste em Linguística

Nossos resultados ajudam a compreender melhor a dinâmica de perspectivas sociais dentro do grupo e a refletir sobre os estudos de organização grupal / Abstract: In this thesis, we discuss the role of cognitive/discursive processes in the identification of social perspectives in a group composed by researchers and aphasics. We aim at analyzing cognitive/discursive actions carried out in thematic interviews (ALBERTI, 2004) with participants of the Social Center of Aphasics (CCA), located at the Language Studies Institute (IEL/UNICAMP) ¿ a center for social interactions among aphasic and non-aphasic people. We elaborated an interview about the group organization and the collective/individual experiences carried out in CCA. We interviewed 2 (two) aphasics and 2 (two) researchers, members of CCA. By means of the analysis of the group structure and the discursive production, we show the relationship among social experiences, roles and cognitive/discursive actions. Results show the inter-relation among re-categorizations, meta-discursive processes and activation of frames. In analyzing these processes, we noted that there is coordination among them, according to social experiences and roles that participants have in the group. We identified and questioned the notions of social perspective (GRAUMANN, 1993; VAN DIJK, 2012 [2008]) defined as the social location marked by some social experiences. We concluded that the existent "gap" among the involved social experiences does not prevent the cohesion among perspectives. Our results collaborate to the study of group organization and the dynamics of social perspectives in group / Mestrado / Linguistica / Mestre em Linguística
