Education and welfare in professional football academies and centres of excellence : a sociological study

Platts, Chris January 2012 (has links)
A career as a professional footballer has long been regarded as a highly sought after occupation for many young males within the UK and, against this backdrop, since the 1970s increasing attention has come to be placed on the way young players are identified and developed within professional clubs. Particular concern has been expressed over the number of players who, having been developed by professional clubs, fail to secure a professional contract, and the ways in which clubs should help young players safeguard their futures through alternative career training. There, have, however, been very few studies that have analyzed the education and welfare provisions that are offered within professional football Academies and Centres of Excellence, and fewer still that have done this from a sociological perspective. By drawing upon the figurational sociology of Norbert Elias, concepts derived from symbolic interactionism, and existing work in the sociology of youth, the objective of this study is to examine the realities of young players' day-to-day working-lives, the experiences they have of the educational programmes they follow, and the welfare-related matters that arise within present-day Academies and CoE. Using data generated by self-completion questionnaires and focus groups with 303 players in 21 Academies and CoE in England and Wales, the findings of the study suggest that players continue to be socialized into a largely anti-academic culture that has traditionally underpinned the world of professional football, and in which the demonstration of a 'good attitude' and commitment to the more central members of players' interdependencies (especially coaches and managers) dominated all other concerns. Indeed, it was also clear that the deep-seated values players held in relation to the professional game as part of their individual and group habituses were shaped by the figurations into which they were born and had been developed during the more impressionable phases of childhood and youth. Players' welfare needs were significantly compromised by the strong degree of suspicion and obvious degree of mistrust that characterized their relationship with club management, which emanated from players' fears that confidential matters would always 'get back' to others inside the club. This was exacerbated, in almost all cases, by players' observations that they were treated as if they were 'bottom of the club' and whose welfare needs were not generally well understood by those working within Academies and CoE.

Asmens sveikatos priežiūros įstaigų tinklo, teikiančio pagalbą traumas patyrusiems pacientams, optimizavimo galimybių ir poreikių vertinimas / Evaluation of the opportunities and needs optimisation of the hospital network which provides medical care for trauma patients

Gonak, Anton 20 June 2008 (has links)
Darbo tikslas. Tyrimo metodika. Tyrimo objektas – ASPĮ, teikiančios pagalbą traumas patyrusiems pacientams bei GMP įstaigos. Tyrimo metodai: Mokslinės literatūros analizė, respondentų apklausa, statistinė duomenų analizė naudojant SPSS 13 versiją bei MS Excel, geografinės informacinės sistemos „Arc View 9.11” programinę įranga. Rezultatai. Esant vienam traumos centrui apskrityje (i viso 10 centrų), visiems Lietuvos gyventojams pagalba būtų prieinama per 1 val. Šiuo metu GMP per 15 minučių prieinama pusei LR teritorijos. Iš viso į 0 lygio traumos centrus kreipiasi beveik trečdalis visų traumą patyrusių pacientų, tačiau vienas šio lygio centras vidutiniškai aptarnauja 13,5 kartų mažiau pacientų, nei trečiojo lygio (p<0,005). Nulinio lygio centre vidutiniškai teikiama 9 kartų mažiau stacionarių paslaugų, lyginant su III lygio traumos centru (p<0,005). Nulinio lygio įstaigose traumos pacientų srautas yra nepakankamas lyginant su kitų lygių ASPĮ srautais. Dalis 0 lygio traumos centrų neturi pakankamo specialistų (ortopedų traumatologų, anesteziologų ir reanimatologų) skaičiaus, kurie užtikrintų nenutrūkstamą 24 valandų pagalbos teikimo ciklą. Didžiausias investicijų poreikis yra III lygio traumos centrų, tačiau investicijų poreikis 1 ligoniui šio lygio centre - 6,5... [toliau žr. visą tekstą] / The aim - to evaluate possibilities of the health care institutions which provides orthopaedic traumatology and/or surgery services, to provide qualified medical care and their infrastructure renewal needs. Methods. The object of the study is health care institutions which provide services for patients after trauma and also emergency service providers. Methods of the study: the analysis of the academic literature, respondents surveys, analysis of the statistical data using „SPPS“ 13th version, MS Excell program and geographical information system as well as Arc View 9.11 software program. Results. If there is one trauma centre in the area (there are 10 centres overall), all residents of Lithuania would have the access to the health care institutions in one hour. At this time emergency service is available in 15 minutes in the half of the Lithuanian territory. Overall, third part of the patients are maintained by zero level hospitals. Unfortunately, one of these centres (hospital) service 13.5 times less patients than third level canters (p < 0.005). On average, zero level centres provide service for the stationary care 9 times less compared to the third level hospitals (p<0.005). The demand for the zero level centres is insufficient compared to demand for university level care (hospitals). Part of the zero level trauma centres don‘t have sufficient number of specialists of anaesthesiology, reanimatology and traumatology disciplines that could provide continues 24 hour... [to full text]

The educational role and value of junior traffic training centres within the Outcomes-based education curriculum / Sipho Johannes Molefe

Molefe, Sipho Johannes January 2004 (has links)
The aim of this study was to outline the importance of Junior Traffic Training Centres in both primary and secondary schools. This would aid the effective integration of Traffic Safety Education in the school curriculum within outcomes-based education. The primary objective of this research was to determine the ways in which Junior Traffic Training Centres at schools are instrumental in the development of knowledge, skills and attitudes of learners towards safe participation in traffic environment. This research was conducted by means of a literature study and an empirical investigation through a questionnaire and observations. Investigation focused on learners from three schools, namely Maheelo Primary School (a farm school at Hartbeesfontein), Gaenthone Secondary School (a semi-rural school in Tigane Township near Hartbeesfontein) and Phaladi Combined School situated in Ikageng Township. It was found that more emphasis should be placed on pedestrian education. Learners should be taught traffic safety from pre-school, with the help of Junior Traffic Training Centres. Ten recommendations are made in Section 7.5. These include more training in Traffic Safety Education and that focus must be placed on disadvantaged areas; that government should avail trained teachers in Traffic Safety Education; and that schools must have access to Junior Traffic Training Centres. This study is of significance to the North West Province and the South African society because each day we lose learners through road accidents. This does not only cost the government money but is also painful to all of us. This study maintains that teaching our learners road safety education could contribute towards overcoming this situation. / Thesis (M.Ed.)--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2004.

La dimensió europea de l'educació als centres d'educació secundària obligatòria del Tarragonès

Torres Sabaté, M. Concepción 01 July 2004 (has links)
Doctoral Thesis: The European Dimension of Education in the Secondary Education Centres of the Tarragonès.Presented by: M. Concepció Torres SabatéSupervisor: Dr Joana Noguera ArromUniversitat Rovira i Virgili Tarragona 2004This doctoral thesis is developed over six chapters, the first of which defines the historical, political and legislative framework that has been generated by the unification of the countries that form the European Union, presenting a summary of the most noteworthy events that have been of influence. However, since the subject that interests us is education, that is how integration in the EU is lived in the educational environment, in the second chapter we specify how the treatment of education has evolved over various stages and treaties, as well as actions, documents and programmes that are most relevant to this aspect, programmatic lines of education policy and new challenges in this field and in twenty-first century society. We believe that through education the feeling of European citizenship can be achieved. As Jacques Delors says, "... the Commission is aware of the contribution that education must make to economic and social development." Knowing the history and the construction process of the EU and its links with the growing importance giving to education allows us to define the current reality as well as analyse the evolution of each member state, aspects that have increased our personal interest in areas related to the EU and education. It is in the third and fourth chapters that we present the real situation of the European dimension in education in the Tarragonès and research in this area. The investigation's general objective is to analyse the programmes and actions that are developed in the Obligatory Secondary Education centres of the Tarragonès, as well as to identify the reality of students, teachers and the European dimension. This is done using instruments (interviews and questionnaires) that help us to determine, using qualitative and quantitative methodologies, some results about practice, knowledge and European thought, thereby arriving at a series of proposals to improve the concept of European citizenship. To illustrate this study there is a presentation of a collection of actions about the EU from various institutions involved in education in the Tarragonès, such as the Universitat Rovira I Virgili, as well as the life-long learning offered by the Institute of Education Sciences of the same university and the information offered by the Department of Education of Tarragona to the teaching staff of education centres, available through the Department itself and the Resource Centre of the Tarragonès.The process of collecting information has been dynamic and laborious, but the chance to analyse a reality so close to home the Tarragonès has been very gratifying. Some of the points that are specified in the theory section have been continually updated, since the construction of the EU has carried on throughout these years. After the conclusions, this thesis ends with a proposal of ideas derived from it and which, based on the needs that have been identified, can help to promote the European dimension in education to students, teachers and other education professionals. These are developed in the fifth chapter. The sixth chapter contains a bibliography, indices of diagrams and tables and indices of attachements."It has been more than 25 years since Europe got its name and it is still a future project." Sexuality among older adults : a taboo subject in CLSC's? = la sexualité auprès des aînés : un subject tabou en CLSC? / Sexualité auprès des aînés : un subject tabou en CLSC?

Zizzi, Pasquale January 2004 (has links)
This qualitative study investigated what factors impact Home-care professionals' ability to effectively discuss and intervene with older adults on the topic of intimacy and sexuality, and to generate a theoretical model for methods in which professionals deal with the subject matter. In depth interviews with nine Home-care professionals (social workers, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, nurses, home-care workers, team coordinators) from a Montreal CLSC who regularly intervene among older adults and utilize the Multiclientele Autonomy Assessment form, documentary evidence, and grounded theory analysis were utilized. Interviews centered on the professionals' conceptions of their roles and experiences as health and social service providers with regards to sexuality in later life. A theoretical model was developed describing (a) Home-care professionals' discomfort in inquiring and/or discussing the topic of sexuality with older adults, (b) phenomena that arose from those causal conditions, (c) strategies for facilitating intervention on the topic with older adults, (d) the consequences of those strategies. Implications for future research and practice are addressed.
