A Comparative Study of Maternal-Infant Bonding and Attachment as it Exists in Traditional Hospital Birthing Approaches and Certified Nurse-Midwifery Approaches

The focus of this paper is the problem of comparatively quantifying questionnaire information in terms of which approach; traditional hospital or certified nurse-midwifery, is more conducive to optimal maternal-infant bonding and attachment. Clarification of the percentage results evince that certified nurse-midwifery is 33% more conducive to optimal maternal-infant bonding and attachment than the traditional hospital approach. Research indicates that certified nurse-midwives birthing approach already promotes positive phenomenons of bonding and attachment whereas traditional hospital practices are just now incorporating maternal and family birthing plan choices to enhance maternal-infant bonding and attachment possibilities.

Evaluating the knowledge of those who teach : an analysis of candidates' performance on the certified nurse educator (CNE) examination

This quantitative, retrospective, multivariate, non-experimental study examined the first-time performance of 2,673 academic nurse educators who took the CNE examination between September 28, 2005 and September 30, 2011. Post-positivism and Abbott's system of the professions theory served as the philosophical and theoretical underpinnings of this original research which attempted to determine if a relationship existed between educational preparation or years of full-time faculty employment (independent variables) and first-time pass/fail performance on the CNE examination and in each of content areas (dependent variables). The Chi-square test of independence revealed the lack of a statistically significant relationship between educational preparation and first-time pass/fail performance on the CNE examination. Independent t-tests revealed a statistically significant relationship between Option B study participants and content area three (use assessment and evaluation strategies), (t[2,671] = -2.20, p = .03); four (participate in curriculum design and evaluation of program outcomes), (t[2,671] = -2.06, p = .04); and six (engage in scholarship, service, and leadership), (t[2,671] = -2.34, p = .02). Binary logistic regression revealed that a one year increase in full-time employment resulted in a 1.05 times greater likelihood of passing the CNE examination (OR = 1.05; 95% CI 1.03, 1.06; p = .00). Last, simple linear regression revealed that years of full-time faculty employment contributed to 3.2% of the variability within content area four, 2.8% within content area six, and 2.1% within content area three. The results of this study provide insight about faculty development and mentoring needs, present evidence to policy makers and nursing education leaders, and offer guidance to curricula developers.

Master's degree and post-master's certificate preparation for the academic nurse educator role : the use of the National League for Nursing Core Competencies of nurse educators as a curriculum guide

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / This study described the education courses in Master of Science in Nursing Education (MSN Ed) degree and post-master’s certificate (PMC) in nursing education programs and determined which of the eight NLN Core Competencies, used to certify nurse educators, were represented. Data regarding the required credit hours, practicum hours, distance accessibility, and preparation for the Certified Nurse EducatorCM (CNE) Examination also were collected. The study used a descriptive design using a web scraping technique. Program information was obtained from the accrediting bodies for graduate nursing programs in 2015. Course description data were obtained from web pages via curriculum plans, course catalogs, graduate handbooks, or other institutional web pages. Data were collected from each program website, collated, uploaded, and analyzed. In both types of programs, evidence was found for the NLN Core Competencies: Facilitate Learning (97%), Participate in Curriculum Design and Evaluation of Program Outcomes (97%), Use Assessment and Evaluation Strategies (95%), Pursue Continuous Quality Improvement in the Nurse Educator Role (88%), Engage in Scholarship (45%), Function as a Change Agent and Leader (30%), Facilitate Learner Development and Socialization (28%), and Function within the Educational Environment (12%). Only 36% and 40% of MSN Ed and PMC in nursing education programs, respectively, were completely distance accessible. Required credit hours varied from 28 to 65 for the entire MSN Ed and from 6 to 47 for the nursing education courses. PMC credit hours varied from 3 to 45. Practicum clock hours, for both programs, ranged from 60–500 while practicum credit hours ranged from 1–18. Revision of MSN Ed and PMC curricula is indicated to improve inclusion of content in all competency areas. Moreover, increasing the number of distance accessible programs may encourage more nurses to consider a master’s degree or post-master’s certificate in nursing education.

Infection Control And Health Care Associated Infection (hcai) In The Nursing Home: A Study To Determine The Impact Of An Educational Video And Pamphlet About Infection Control On Knowledge And Perception Of Hand Hygiene In Certified Nurse Assistants

The impact of an education program on perception, knowledge, and infection rate was evaluated in this study. The educational intervention consisted of a video on infection control and a World Health Organization (WHO) pamphlet for hand hygiene. The study was conducted in one nursing home in the Southeastern United States. The survey sample consisted of 66 certified nurse assistants (CNAs). A pre- and post-intervention design was employed using the WHO’s Hand Hygiene Knowledge Questionnaire and the WHO Perception Survey. Friedman’s test and central tendencies showed no statistical relationship between the educational intervention and the overall knowledge scores of the sample. There also were no statistical differences in perception of hand hygiene in the CNA sample. Infection frequency was reduced with a percent change of -42%. While results of knowledge and perception surveys were not statistically significant, multiple conclusions were derived to suggest that educational opportunities may impact hand hygiene practice in CNAs and lead to a decrease in infection.

Sjuksköterskors och undersköterskors uppfattningar om omvårdnadens innehåll och arbete : En intervjustudie

Bakgrund: Omvårdnad är ett ord som kan ha flera olika betydelser, det kan vara ett verb som något man utövar eller en synonym med kunskap som något som erhålls. Syfte: Syftet med studien var att beskriva vad sjuksköterskor och undersköterskor ansåg inbegripas av begreppet omvårdnad och “god omvårdnad” samt vad för arbetsuppgifter de olika yrkeskategorierna utförde inom ramen för omvårdnad. Metod:Individuella intervjuer av tre sjuksköterskor och fyra undersköterskor. Innehållet analyserades med hjälp av kvalitativ innehållsanalys. Fem teman och 21 kategorier framkom. Resultat: Respondenterna uttryckte att den basala omvårdnaden hade en central roll inom begreppet omvårdnad. Vid diskussion om vad god omvårdnad innebar framhävde de flesta att ett gott bemötande var avgörande, att utföra arbetsuppgifter med omtanke och respekt. Att bedriva personcentrerad vård ansågs även ge god omvårdnad. Förutom basal omvårdnad och bemötande framkom det att medicinsk teknik var en stor del av arbetet inom omvårdnaden och att samarbete var en viktig del. Det rådde få meningsskiljaktigheter angående sjuksköterskans respektive undersköterskans arbetsuppgifter. Slutsats: Sjuksköterskorna och undersköterskorna som intervjuats har till stor del en samlad bild utav vad begreppet omvårdnad innebär. Det fokuserades mest på basal omvårdnad och gott bemötande vilket båda är två viktiga och centrala delar inom omvårdnaden. Att det inte fanns många meningsskiljaktigheter mellan undersköterskorna och sjuksköterskan kan ses som ett resultat av en tydlig arbetsfördelning. / Background: Nursing is a word that can have several meanings, it can be a verb or be synonymous with knowledge. Aim: The aim with this study was to describe what registered nurses (RN) and certified nursing assistant (CNA) perceived by the expressions nursing  and “qualitative nursing ” and what tasks at work these two different professions performed within the limits of nursing. Method: Qualitative interview study with individual interviews with three RN's and four CNA's. The content was analyzed through qualitative content analysis. Five themes and 21 categories arose. Results: The respondents expressed that the basal nursing care had a central role within the concept; nursing. At discussions about what good nursing meant, it was brought forth that a good interaction was decisive, to perform work related tasks with consideration and respect. To exercise person centered care was also considered to be good nursing. Besides basal nursing care and interactions it became apparent that medical technique is a big part of the job within nursing and that cooperation is an important part as well. There were few differences in opinions concerning RN respectively CNA job tasks. Conclusion: RN's and CNA's that were interviewed have the same general idea about what the concept nursing implies. It mainly focused on basal nursing care and good interactions, which were both considered as important parts within nursing. It can be seen that the lack of differences in opinion between CNA's and RN's is brought forth by a clear division of work between the two.

The Role of Social Capital in Organizations: The Precursors and Effects of Social Capital among Certified Nurse Aides in Nursing Homes

The role of social capital in forming organizational commitment is the focus of this research. Organizational social capital is the idea that social relationships have value in the organization. The theoretical framework is based on Kanter's (1993) structure of organizational commitment. This research views the structure within organizations based on global empowerment, job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and social capital. In addition, the role that race, income, and education affect the organizational structure is also taken into account. The organizational configuration was assembled using a structural equation model with latent variables employing a sample of 235 certified nurse aides. The sample was collected from 10 nursing homes in the Dallas-Ft.Worth metropolitan area. It was expected that Kanter's general format is reestablished within the sample. In fact, the study found that empowerment significantly influences job satisfaction. In turn, job satisfaction does foster organizational commitment. Although Kanter's original thesis was supported in this analysis, it was also determined that social capital plays a significant mediating role in creating organizational commitment. Furthermore, this research indicates that social capital alone can create organizational commitment. Thus, in conclusion, this research builds on Kanter's original idea and argues that organizational commitment is based on job satisfaction, global empowerment, and social capital.
