Formative Period Diagnostic Materials of the Chao and Santa Valleys, North Coast of PerúAs a result of the author’s surface surveys in the Chao and Santa valleys, a series of data of Formative Period archaeological sites were recovered. The Chao valley is located to the north of the Santa valley and both share an almost parallel direction of their rivers. At the middle part of their basins routes connect the valleys and allow access to the near highlands since the Preceramic Period. This paper present ceramics with incised decoration gathered from excavations and surface surveys as well as conical mud bricks from monumental structures. / Como resultado de trabajos realizados por la autora en estos valles, se recogieron una serie de datos de sitios arqueológicos pertenecientes al Periodo Formativo. El valle de Chao se ubica al norte del Santa y ambos tienen en común los cursos casi paralelos de sus cauces yen sus partes media existen rutas de comunicación entre sí y con la sierra vecina desde el Periodo Precerámico. En este trabajo se presenta cerámica incisa de excavación y de superficie así como adobes cónicos en sitios con arquitectura monumental.

O texto literário, e neste incluímos também a canção, como resultado de uma produção discursiva, participa tanto do processo social quanto do sistema significante em que está inserido. Esta dissertação discute a presença de artistas intelectuais na sociedade, tratando de identificar como estes cumprem seu papel no que se refere à formação de opinião de seu público. Para tanto, enfocaremos o trabalho do cantor e compositor franco-espanhol José Manuel Arturo Tomas, o Manu Chao, tendo como corpus artístico o álbum Clandestino: esperando la ultima ola (Virgin Records/1998). Através da análise de algumas canções e depoimentos, descreveremos e exemplificaremos como o comportamento intelectual é exercido por esse sujeito cosmopolita, capaz de falar várias línguas e transportar-se de um país a outro, sem mais dificuldades. Como resultado, encontramos, então, um artista engajado que se comporta como o intelectual que chega para observar, refletir e comunicar ao mundo, a partir da canção como crônica cosmopolita, o que acontece nos lugares por onde passa, ao transformar suas canções e seus shows em momentos de reflexão política, provocando, assim, uma abertura de fronteiras. Ao cantar, ato acima de tudo de ação comunicativa, Manu Chao reivindica e mescla diferentes tradições culturais de uma infinidade de países por onde passou e/ou viveu, utilizando a “patchanka” como voz que assinala o hibridismo e unifica uma mensagem. Com isso, expõe um projeto musical concreto que se encontra fora de uma formatação pré-estabelecida, mas dentro de uma maneira inteligente de aproveitamento e subversão dos meios de comunicação para produzir e divulgar seu projeto contra-hegemônico. / La canción y el trabajo comprometido de algunos intelectuales constituyen una esfera artística y social de gran alcance e importancia. El texto literario, y en éste incluímos también la canción, como resultado de una producción discursiva, participa tanto del proceso social como del sistema significante en el cual está inserto. Plastic, including microplastic, is a common product in the society today and is starting to be more common in oceans where it can stay for a long time. Microplastic is defined usually in the size range five millimeter and smaller and together with the important Chao Phraya river in Bangkok, Thailand, the main subject of this paper is described. More clearly, the aim of this paper is to provide a first-hand quantification of microplastics flowing into the Chao Phraya River. Samples were taken at upstream, middle and downstream locations in the river with a pump-system and were then analyzed in a lab. The result showed an increasing load of microplastic entering the river from Bangkok, for example the result for size range five to one millimeter showed a six times increase of microplastic between the upstream and downstream point. / Plast, däribland mikroplaster, är en vanlig förekommande produkt i samhället idag och börjar bli allt vanligare i hav där det också kan stanna ett långt tag efter att det hamnat där. Mikroplaster definieras oftast med storleks intervallet fem millimeter och mindre och tillsammans med den viktiga floden Chao Phraya i Bangkok, Thailand, är huvudämnet för denna studie beskriven. Mer tydligt, målet för denna studie är att förse en första kvantifiering av mikroplaster som flödar in till Chao Phraya floden. Prover togs på platser som var uppströms, i mitten och nedströms på floden och sedan analyserades dessa prover i ett laboratorium. Resultatet som framkom visade på ökande belastning av mikroplaster i floden från Bangkok, exempelvis visade resultatet för storleks intervallet fem till en millimeter på en sex gånger ökning av mikroplaster mellan uppströms platsen och nedströms platsen. Ökningen som troligen kommer från innerstaden kan bero på olika faktorer såsom väder, stadens avfallshantering och användningen av engångsprodukter som är av plastmaterial. Således påvisar detta vikten av, bland annat, en fungerande avfallshantering.

Finding a voice—a closer look at Chinese choral music development in the early twentieth century through Chao Yuan-Ren, Huang Zi, and Xian Xing-Hai

At the beginning of the twentieth century, when young Chinese scholars looked to Western nations for answers in hope of revitalizing a nation that once dominated the East, musicians and poets embarked on a journey of establishing a new Chinese style of music. Three sets of composer/poet collaborations and three different ways of infusing Western culture with Chinese culture laid the foundation for Chinese choral music today. Chao Yuan-Ren was a brilliant linguist and music lover who thought that to simply implant Western music onto Chinese text would suffice–his HaiYun, set to a poem of the equally brilliant poet Xu Zhi-Mo serves as a good example. Huang Zi believed in Confucius’ teachings that all new things must grow out of tradition. He and the lyricist Wei Huang-Zhang extended a literary tradition started in the Tang dynasty and produced Song of Everlasting Sorrow, which illustrates this philosophy quite well. Yet, for the underprivileged people who also loved music, folk songs provided a fertile ground as seen in the works of Xian Xing-Hai. During the second Sino-Japanese War, the poet Guang Wei-Ran and Xian worked hand-in-hand, producing the Yellow River Cantata that contains folksong-like melodies and many folk-music elements. Chinese choral music today is unavoidably connected to these three pieces. This document traces the early history of Chinese choral music through these three pieces and explains their influences on Chinese choral music today.
