Analýza činnosti Papežských misijních děl v České republice / Analysis of the Pontifical Missionary Societies' Activities in the Czech Republic

Hajičová, Ivana January 2013 (has links)
The aim of the thesis "Analysis of the Pontifical Missionary Societies' (PMS) Activities in the Czech Republic" is to determine to what extent the activities of Czech PMS are truly missionary. First, basic terms are defined: mission, charity, humanitarian aid, and development assistance (Chapter 1). What they all have in common is caring for others; charity and mission have religious motivation and are carried out by the Church, whereas humanitarian aid and development assistance are matters of a secular state (though in everyday use the terms are often confused). Charity, i. e. selfless help to those in need, does not have a religious goal, it is not an instrument of evangelization unlike mission, whose aim it is to proclaim the Gospel (Chapter 2). Mission lies at the heart of the PMS on a worldwide scale and for this purpose they were established: Society for the Propagation of the Faith 1822, Society of the Holy Childhood 1843, Society of St. Peter the Apostle 1889, and Missionary Union 1916 (Chapter 3). Since their renewal in the CR in 1993 the Societies have developed a wide range of membership forms and activities, and collection yields have grown tenfold (Chapter 4). What the money is spent on determines the basic character of the institution. Exact data of the National Office for 2011 and 2012 show...

Práce laiků - dobrovolníků ve farnosti Chlumec nad Cidlinou / The work of laymen - volunteers in the parish of Chlumec nad Cidlinou

Krátká, Helena January 2015 (has links)
The thesis focuses on the activity of laymen - volunteers in the Chlumec church community in the period after November 1989 in the context of their contribution to fulfilling the mission of the church. The work is divided into four main chapters. The aim of the first chapter is to expound the role of the church in the present-day world and to describe its four functions. Dealing with the church community, the second chapter clarifies various aspects of how the church community may be perceived, and identifies its mission in the sphere of spreading the Gospel and work for those in need. To be found in the third chapter is a detailed description of the work of laymen in the church of Chlumec nad Cidlinou, whose service contributes to fulfilling both the parish functions as well as certain expectations of the neighbouring local community. The objective of the fourth chapter is to map out the hitherto unexplored activities of the Parish charity in Chlumec nad Cidlinou and its volunteer work, the curative stay of the Chernobyl children. During the particular period, these activities were carried out above all by the laymen - volunteers and represented a significant part of diaconia in the church community. The conclusion of the thesis offers a reflection on the manner in which the laymen activities...

How do Communicators in Social Change Organisations Navigate the Use of Artificial Intelligence? : A Thematic Analysis Through the Lens of Ethical Storytelling

Svensson, Anna January 2023 (has links)
The increasing accessibility and sophistication of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in generating high-quality images and texts presents opportunities, risks, and ethical dilemmas in the Communication about Development (ComDev) sector. This dissertation asks: how do ComDev professionals navigate the ethics of using AI to create visual and written content to raise funds and motivate action on global social issues? Drawing on the idea that AI ethics cannot be understood or achieved independent of a broader ethical structure, the project develops a theoretical framework of ethical storytelling, suggesting this can be successfully applied to AI and non-AI-generated content. Based on semi-structured interviews and thematic analysis of the resulting transcript, findings can broadly be categorised into concerns regarding intentional manipulation and misleading through the use of AI tools, as well as unintentional harm caused by biased models and outputs. The participants' reflections revealed an interest in and concern with ethical storytelling. The way in which these ethical concerns and proposed strategies for mitigation are navigated supports the thesis that the same ethical storytelling framework can be applied to content creation and outputs regardless of the techniques used to generate it. The findings illustrate a tension between ethical storytelling and practical considerations related to fundraising experienced by ComDev professionals as they consider the risks and opportunities of this emerging technology. This conclusion contributes to, and supports findings within, an existing body of research on how people working in this sector navigate the complexities and ethical dilemmas of their work.

Vill du vara en bra eller dålig människa? : En kritisk visuell retorikanalys av UNHCR:s övertygelsestrategier i reklamfilmer om flyktingkrisen i Ukraina

Sjöstedt, Maya, Öström, Elin January 2022 (has links)
It’s significant for charities to incorporate persuasion strategies into their communication to create engagement and encourage donations. This is especially important in circumstances of war due to the millions of people who are forced to flee and need emergency assistance. UNHCR is currently located in the war-torn area of Ukraine and needs support to continue their humanitarian aid. Thus, this study aims to examine how the UNHCR uses persuasion strategies in their advertisements concerning the refugee crisis in Ukraine to prompt donations. The object of the study causes the following research questions: What persuasion strategies does UNHCR use to generate contributions through commercials related to the refugee crisis in Ukraine? In which way are the three pisteis of rhetoric: logos, ethos, and pathos, used? What meaning can the commercials be seen communicating on a manifest and latent level? As the study focuses on different ways of convincing, rhetorics as a theoretical framework becomes natural to use. The classical and visual rhetoric thus serve as a support in the critical visual rhetoric analysis carried out in the study. A generic targeted selection has been used to select and analyze four commercials from the UNHCR's YouTube channel. The results show that UNHCR frequently uses rhetorical means to persuade donations, including the three pisteis of rhetoric and other persuasion strategies that appear mainly at a latent level.

High-resolution lake-based magnetic mapping and modelling of basement structures, with examples from Küçükçekmece Lagoon, Turkey and Charity Shoal, Lake Ontario

Suttak, Philip A. 10 1900 (has links)

Magnetic surveys are one of the principal geophysical methods employed to map the structure of basement rocks deeply buried below cover strata. In resource studies, aeromagnetic surveys are commonly acquired at regional scales (100-1000’s km2) while very few studies have attempted to resolve basement structures at site-scale (<10 >km2). In this study, high-resolution lake-based magnetic survey methods were evaluated for mapping of deeply-buried basement faults (Küçükçekmece Lagoon, Turkey; 6 km2) and a suspected meteorite impact crater (Charity Shoal, Lake Ontario; 9 km2). Total magnetic intensity (TMI) surveys were acquired using a single Overhauser magnetometer with 50-150 m line spacing. Interpretation of the magnetic data was aided by forward modelling of TMI data and depth to basement estimates using Euler and analytic signal methods. Total magnetic intensity (TMI) maps of Küçükçekmece Lagoon identify several north-northwest trending (340-350°) magnetic lineaments that are aligned with strike-slip faults mapped from offshore seismic data. The pattern of magnetic anomalies in the lagoon is consistent with extensional normal faulting of bedrock and lake sediments. Magnetic results from Charity Shoal reveal a large (>1400 nT) parabolic-shaped magnetic anomaly centered over the crater basin and an annular magnetic high (40-50 nT) corresponding with the basin rim. Modelling results exclude the origin of the CSS as a shallow glacial erosional or karst sinkhole feature and are most consistent with a pre-Paleozoic meteorite impact in the Precambrian basement.
/ Master of Science (MSc)

The Brahmin Problem: Charity, Expenditure and the Genealogy of Sovereignty in Travancore

Shajahan, Muhammed Shah 15 May 2024 (has links)
Envisioned as a contribution to South Asian studies in general, and the fields of historical and political anthropology in particular, this dissertation develops around a set of relationships centered on the concept of sovereignty. In addressing the question of what the expenditure on Brahmins and the colonial, missionary, and Nair critiques against it meant for the evolving notion of sovereignty for the princely state of Travancore in the nineteenth century, I argue that the colonial, missionary and Nair critiques were not just based on the economic logic of productivity and the governmental logic of welfare, but also on the recognition of the Brahmin Problem as the fundamental crisis of sovereignty. Brahmin is the name of a problem that concerns the practice of expenditure, the relationship of property, and the construction of religion in the nineteenth-century Travancore. Travancore, located in the southwest of today's South India, was a native princely state under the indirect rule of the British East India Company in the first half of the nineteenth century and under the British crown in the second half. The problem was articulated in the colonial critique of spending money on Brahmins, their ceremonies, and their feeding. In trying to construct an archive of the crisis out of this problem embedded in the colonial and later missionary and Nair critiques of the state's expenditure in the nineteenth century, I focus on three key sites of contestation. The first one is the relationship of property, the second is the practice of feeding, and the third is expenditure on ceremonials. The postulation of the problem in these three sites is marked by colonial policies such as the integration of temples, or Brahmin properties, to the state treasury in the early nineteenth century and the activation of expenditure as a category of critique owing to the colonial pressure on the native state of Travancore to ensure the surplus of two lakhs rupees per year for the tributary payment for the British and the emergence of what I call public critique in nineteenth century. In my effort to build this problem, I particularly pay attention to its relationship with the evolving notion of sovereignty in the nineteenth century. This relationship is not a stable or steady text for analysis, but rather contingent on how the state variously negotiated this problem, leading to the emergence of the concepts of charity, trust, and religion. I characterize this negotiation of the state as translation, transposition, and adaptation within the colonial grammar of power. The archive of this negotiation, characterized by translation, transposition, and adaptation, provided me with the first material to think about charity, trust, and religion and see how they were connected to the evolving sovereignty of the state. By drawing on primary sources collected from various archives in Kerala, I map how sovereignty constituted a problem space in Travancore for a genealogical rumination. Following David Scott, Quentin Skinner, Ludwig Wittgenstein, Talal Asad, and Michel Foucault, I employ genealogy as a method to understand sovereignty as a relationship of power rather than an absolute type of power. This relationship of power is characterized by the crisis of the Brahmin Problem, giving rise to what I call, following Scott, the problem space of sovereignty. My primary sources consist of Travancore administrative records, temple records, written exchanges between the Dewan of Travancore and the British Resident, royal orders, colonial policy records, records of the policy discussion for temple reform, newspapers, and magazines. The dissertation concludes with a reflection on the scholarly stakes in studying sovereignty as a relationship of power in the context of caste, religion, and state in the contemporary context. / Doctor of Philosophy / The dissertation proposes a genealogical approach to the study of sovereignty in the nineteenth-century Travancore princely state by constructing what it calls the Brahmin Problem. I conceptualize the Brahmin problem as a form of expenditure that remained unexplained to the colonial officials in the Madras Presidency. Following the nineteenth-century debates around expenditure, charity, and trust, the dissertation traces varying expressions of sovereignty across time and argues that the princely state of Travancore showcased an archive of crisis cataloged by the excessive presence of the Brahmin problem. What this archive of crisis entailed was a necessity for the state to refine its policies of expenditure that include translation, transposition, and adaptation within the colonial grammar of power. Following the method of historical anthropology, the dissertation tells the story of princely sovereignty in the context of caste and expenditure in nineteenth-century Travancore.

The Sisters of Charity in Nineteenth-Century America: Civil War Nurses and Philanthropic Pioneers

Coon, Katherine E. 19 July 2010 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / This thesis seeks to answer the following question: What was the legacy of the Sisters of Charity in the history of philanthropy, women’s history, medicine and nursing? The Sisters of Charity was a Catholic religious order that provided volunteer nurses, and became highly visible, during the American Civil War. Several hundred Catholic sister nurses served; they supported both the Union and Confederacy by caring for soldiers from both armies. The sisters’ story is important because of the religious and gender biases they overcame. As nurses, the Sisters of Charity interacted with different people: they cared for soldiers, worked at the direction of surgeons and alongside lay relief workers. The war propelled them into public view, and the sisters acted as agents of change. Their philanthropy eroded some of the antebellum cultural proscriptions that previously confined Catholics, women and nurses. This thesis argues the Sisters of Charity created and implemented an antebellum philanthropic model, key aspects of which the majority, non-Catholic culture emulated after the war. The Sisters of Charity were agents of social change: they broke down religious, social and gender barriers, and developed a prototype for a healthcare model that the secular world emulated. Many women responded to the unprecedented suffering and cataclysmic conditions of the Civil War in a multitude of ways, and philanthropy was forever changed as a result. Wartime benevolence provided templates for large-scale voluntary organizations, illuminated the issue of payment for charity workers, moved the practice of philanthropy from individual to institutional, and led to the development of nursing as a profession. Female voluntarism shifted into the front and center of the public sphere. Charitable work moved along the continuum from individual to institutional, from volunteer to professional. Questions regarding the respective roles of payment to charitable workers developed. Nursing gained recognition as a profession, and formal training began. The Sisters of Charity were leaders in all these areas, and their orders served as models for the future of philanthropy. Yet they are often absent from analyses of the trajectory of nineteenth-century philanthropy, and this thesis delivers them to the discussion.
