Kigali Charity School Analyzed Through an Implementation Science Framework

Fronk, Alexander T. 01 May 2014 (has links)
Implementation science is a relatively new field focused on ensuring that programs are planned well and then delivered as planned. This thesis describes the implementation process for a nursery-level charity school in Kigali, Rwanda, focusing on the facilitators and difficulties encountered in establishing this school. The research process consisted of interviewing 13 individuals that are a part of the school in question. The researcher transcribed the interviews using an implementation science framework and found trends in their statements that shed light on the establishment of the school. With the help of three coders, the researcher assessed their comments for evidence of helps and hindrances through the implementation process. This thesis presents the results and the implications for implementation science. It will provide valuable information for those wishing to start and maintain grassroots, charitable programs for children in the developing world.

Maintenance of interventions in organisations

Mullen, Nadia, n/a January 2007 (has links)
Many successful interventions are not maintained after researchers leave an organisation at the conclusion of a study. This research was conducted to assess the magnitude of this problem and determine which variables affect intervention maintenance. Maintenance was examined in a review and analysis of 125 applicable studies published in the Journal of Organizational Behavior Management from 1977 - 1999. Where necessary, authors of studies were contacted to determine the maintenance status of their intervention. The analysis found the extent of this problem in published studies is substantial. Intervention maintenance was necessary to maintain the interventions effects in two thirds of studies with successful interventions. Of all studies where maintenance was necessary, approximately 40% failed to maintain the intervention. The maintenance procedures derived from the literature, researchers in the field, and journal analysis included planning for a wide range of positive outcomes, designing the intervention to be long-term, and communicating the benefits of the intervention to the organisation. For this thesis, three studies were conducted to examine the effectiveness of these maintenance procedures. The first two studies partially replicated studies where the interventions had been successful but not maintained, with the inclusion of maintenance procedures. Intervention maintenance occurred in a university cafeteria in Study 1, and in one of three supermarkets in Study 2. Study 3 improved on the design and procedure of Study 2, including a manipulation of the maintenance procedures. During intervention in the control supermarket, signs designed to increase customer donations to the supermarket foodbank bin were placed on shelves near discounted items. In the experimental supermarket, both maintenance procedures and signs were used. During 6 weeks of follow-up, the signs were maintained in both supermarkets. The researcher then ceased regular observations, returning only for 1 month, 2 month, and 1 year follow-ups. After researcher presence was withdrawn, maintenance of the signs continued only in the experimental supermarket. This study demonstrates that the maintenance procedures were effective, and necessary, for long-term maintenance to occur after the researcher left the organisation. It was concluded that the maintenance procedures were effective for encouraging intervention maintenance, and recommended that researchers incorporate the procedures into their studies when maintenance is desirable.

Discourse Analysis of Public Debate over U.S. Government Faith-Based Initiative of 2001

Scott, Vincente S 11 May 2011 (has links)
This thesis uses the discourse analysis methods developed by T. Van Dijk and J. P. Gee to examine public debate over the Faith-Based and Community Initiatives in 2001 as it arose in testimony before the U. S. House of Representatives and related news articles published in the New York Times and Washington Post. In analyzing the language used in the congressional hearings and news articles printed between January 2001 and December 2004, Van Dijk‘s categories and related questions were methodologically combined with Gee‘s approach to provide a framework and method for analyzing the underlying discourse. While debate participants expressed strong beliefs in complex social ideals, many see America‘s social problems as intractable in nature, where key decisions about distributions of funds are based on political considerations, as opposed to merit or need.

Le passage du Canada français à la Francophonie mondiale : mutations nationales, démocratisation et altruisme au mouvement Richelieu, 1944 – 1995

Dupuis, Serge January 2013 (has links)
This thesis argues that French Canada did not simply fragment into regional and provincial identities during the 1960s and 1970s, but was also kept afloat by the simultaneous emergence of a francophone supranational reference. In order to demonstrate this argument, I have studied the archives of the Richelieu movement, a French Canadian society founded in 1944 in Ottawa, which was internationalized in the hopes of developing relationships amongst the francophone elite around the world. This thesis also considers the process of democratization and the evolution of conceptions of altruism within the movement, signalling again the degree to which the global project of the Francophonie captivated the spirits of Francophones in North America, but also in Europe, the Caribbean and Africa.

Guilt or Not?Influences of Advertising Sponsor-Charity Fit and Type of Advertising Sponsor on Guilt Appeals in Charity Advertising

Yu, Ya-Ting 20 August 2011 (has links)
Charity advertising has become diversified for more than twenty years. Previous research focused on charity advertising in non-profit organization (NPO) contexts. However not only NPOs but also corporations sponsor charity ads. As one of popular emotional appeals, guilt appeals are used to promote charitable giving. This study compares three types of advertising sponsor including NPO, corporation, and mixed type with sponsor-charity fit on the effects of guilt appeal in charity advertising. The present study employs an experimental design to investigate the effects of the guilt appeals (guilt appeals vs. non-guilt appeals), type of advertising sponsor (NPO vs. corporation vs. mixed) and sponsor-charity fit (high fit vs. low fit) in charity advertising effectiveness. Mixed type is defined as brand-cause alliance or cause-related marketing. A 2x3x2 factorial design is conducted. Twelve different scenarios are established and the ad effects are measured by attitudes toward the ad, purchase intentions, and attitudes toward the ad sponsor. Does guilt work with all types of sponsors? Results of the experiment indicate an interaction between type of advertising sponsor and guilt appeals. The guilt appeals are more effective when the NPO is the advertising sponsor or when the company frames the charity ad as CRM. However, the non-guilt appeals are more effective than the guilt appeals when a corporation is the ad sponsor. Guilt appeals are found to backfire under the two following circumstances: (1) when a corporation is the ad sponsor with a high fit between sponsor and charity, or (2) when mixed type with low sponsor-charity fit is framed in the ad. According to these findings, this study suggests that marketers should choose appropriate advertising appeals while considering their role as advertising sponsor and the sponsor-charity fit.

Don't let this be your greatest adventure : extraordinary experiences and personal transformation

Rundio, Amy Susan 01 July 2014 (has links)
Sport providers should be concerned with the participant experience, and in particular extraordinary experiences, as they have the potential to shift participant behaviors and attitudes to those desired by sport organizations. Extraordinary experiences are characterized by interpersonal interactions, separation from the usual, and feelings of self-transformation or personal growth (Arnould & Price, 1993). Due to the power, intensity, and transformative effects of these experiences, they can generate lasting shifts in beliefs and attitudes (Schouten, McAlexander & Koenig, 2007). This research project examined the relationship between the extraordinary experience and the personal transformation by examining the characteristics of the experience and impacts on participants. Texas 4000 is a community of cancer fighters who “train, fundraise, educate, and bring hope to those with cancer” for one year before their experience culminates with a 4,000 mile bike ride. University students apply to participate, and once accepted they begin planning, fundraising, volunteering and training for their ride to Alaska. Along the ride, they interact with members of the communities they pass through to spread “hope, knowledge, and charity.” Over 400 individuals have completed the ride within the last ten years. For this study, alumni participated in in-depth interviews about their experience and how it impacted their life. Participant impacts included feelings of empowerment, new perspectives and appreciations, a sense of meaning and purpose, and strong relationships that resulted in a sense of community with other riders, the organization, and the larger cancer community. Importantly, participants’ history and backgrounds influenced how participants interacted with the community and the impacts that they felt. Additionally, the extraordinary experience of the ride created enduring change in participants; the preparation for the extraordinary experience was not as impactful and merely allowed participants to develop the necessary skills to participate in the summer ride. / text
