Social equality in recent Catholic social thought: Toward an ethic of global social equality

Cruz, Jeremy V. January 2014 (has links)
Thesis advisor: David Hollenbach, S.J. / This dissertation represents a contribution to the field of Christian social ethics and, in particular, to recent ethical analysis concerning rising inequalities within the global political economy. It draws upon the moral thought of César Chávez, the late Catholic farmworker leader, along with philosopher-economist Amartya Sen, to encourage a further development and foregrounding of emergent egalitarian arguments within recent Catholic social teaching (CST). In short, this project contributes to the formulation of egalitarian ethics that attend to the needs of the world's most exploited and excluded populations, those who are "fenced in" by political and racial statuses that engender deprivation within both dominant and marginal states. Equality among persons receives greater priority than equality between states, though the author does not view equality among persons and equality between groups as impulses that are necessarily mutually exclusive. This project finds broad agreement with Amartya Sen's approach to development. The author argues that human capabilities (not income or some other measure of human well-being) are the proper object of social justice, and that it is equal capability that those with egalitarian concern ought to pursue. However, the author argues that equality in the distribution of capabilities ought to be prioritized over the aggregate production of capabilities within groups, a question that Sen leaves for others to debate. Additionally, the author argues that a global human society is the proper scope of ethical concern when evaluating disparities in human capability. This project represents a person-centered and transnational approach to equality whereby a global community is the proper scope of ethical concern. Thus, the author contends that a transnational equality of human capability is the proper end of advocacy for social justice. / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2014. / Submitted to: Boston College. La Causa Para La Raza: The Educative Processes and Development of Knowledge in the United Farm Workers from 1962 to 1970

Grace, Ellen 02 April 1998 (has links)
This historical study examined the educative processes and development of knowledge in the social movement of the United Farm Workers from 1962 to 1970. Materials for this study were found in the archives of Labor History and Urban Affairs at the Walter Reuther Library at Wayne State University and from secondary sources. A conceptual framework for this study was built upon the theories and positions of those from adult education, educational history, and sociology. This study found that adult learning outside of formal, institutional education can be empowering and life changing as well as providing valuable skills. The learning that occurred in Cesar Chavez's adult life strongly influenced him to leave the migrant stream and establish a community union and social movement. Likewise, the educative processes within the United Farm Workers (UFW) were empowering and prompted farm workers collectively to takes risks to challenge the status quo in their quest for social change. In addition to empowerment, this study determined that the UFW provided numerous educational opportunities for its members to enhance their work, writing, speaking, leadership, and organizational skills. This study determined that Chavez's role in the UFW was inherently educative and that the UFW generated knowledge to society that affected social change. As the movement intellectual, Chavez defined the identity and interests of the social movement to society. Chavez's message was clear. La Causa Para La Raza sought dignity and economic and social justice for the farm workers. The purpose of la causa was for farm workers to gain greater control over their lives and to become more active participants in a democratic society. In 1970, for the first time in the history of farm labor, the UFW succeeded in gaining union contracts from twenty-six major growers in California. Social and economic justice had been won. Conclusions drawn from the study indicate that as a social movement during the period between 1962 and 1970 the UFW offered unique and diverse educational opportunities and experiences for Mexican American farm workers that would not have been possible in institutional education. The UFW demonstrated the diversity and power of educative processes in a social movement for those alienated from formal education. In the tradition of Dewey, Lindeman, and Freire, the UFW represented education for social change. / Ed. D.

Venezuela 's Contemporary Political Crisis in Historical perspective

Buxton, Julia January 2005 (has links)
No / Since the election of Hugo Chávez Frías to the Venezuelan presidency in 1998 on a platform of 'revolutionary' change, the country has been wracked by political turmoil and violence between pro- and anti-government groups. While the political crisis has been reported and portrayed as a new phenomenon that has emerged as a result of Chávez's policy programme and style of government, this article argues that the conflict has deep historical roots and that it has been shaped by the legacy of political organisation in the pre-Chávez period.

On the Insufficiency of Procedure: Assessments of Bolivarian Democracy

Davis, Andrew Paul 10 June 2014 (has links)
The scholarly debate on Venezuela's democratic character has become tremendously polarized since the election of Hugo Chavez in 1998. This starkly divided debate has demonstrable impact on the policy realm, as well as the scholarly literature on democratic theory. This debate has run along ideological lines and has focused on differing conceptualizations of normative democracy, namely representative and participatory avenues of democratic engagement. Beyond providing an impactful analysis of this academic debate, this thesis works to supply an Arendtian defense of participation as a potential lense to assess Venezuela's democratic character. I will effectively argue that scholars should return to traditional conceptualizations of democratic theory, such as Arendt's, in order to provide richer and more substantial empirical assessments of democratic performance in light of the multitude of recent experimentations in democratic praxis that has swept the world. This project is relevant to both the scholarly community, as well as the policy realm. / Master of Arts

Les politiques d’éducation au Venezuela depuis 1998 : de l'école à la cité, portrait in itinere d'une société en métamorphose / Educational politics in Venezuela since 1998 : from the school to the city, portrait in itinere of a changing society

Vaisset, Natacha 24 November 2011 (has links)
After Hugo Chávez election as president of the Republic of Venezuela in 1998, a new Constitution was democratically adopted and a reforming process of the institutions begun. In this PhD, we study the changes that overcame in the field of education in the “Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela” since 1998. The purpose is to determine through a multidisciplinarymethod if, how much and in what conditions the educational politics of the governments ruled by Hugo Chávez follow the global political project of the Bolivarian Revolution, which is thought about as a transforming process of the Venezuelan society. First, we analyze the sociopolitical context in which are realized the educational reforms. Afterward, in thesecond chapter, we study the evolution of the constitutional, legal and administrative frames of this system during the last twelve years, after reminding its situation in 1998. Then, in the third chapter, we analyze how the pedagogical principles and practices of the “bolivarian” education are seen as decisive factors in order to accomplish the ongoing political project

Gramsci tar sig an den borgerliga hegemonin. Den svenska pressens syn på Hugo Chavez 1998-2007

Bergegårdh, Abe January 2008 (has links)

Axis of identities: how socially constructed perceptions affect the foreign policy of nations

Torres, Roman 01 May 2013 (has links)
Contrary to the assumptions of realist theory, this thesis suggests that reality is subjected to social constructions. The national discourse of one country constitutes the context from which societies will generate perceptions and ideas about another society. It is from these socially constructed ideas that states' interests are formed. States interests are what constitute the foreign policy of a country. Given that the United States is the world's hegemon, understanding the process by which countries' interests take shape and evolve will give the United States social awareness and strategic advantage to lead the world's current speedy integration with less volatile rivalries. In order to grasp the factors contributing to the relationship between specific states, some context is needed beforehand. By tracing and comparing historical events in the relations between the United States, Venezuela, and Iran, this thesis examines the constructivist claim that states behavior towards another is directly affected by the social interpretation of their interactions. It is social constructions, not power, what determines if states will view each other as "enemy" or "ally". National identity and worldview ultimately drive state behavior and how countries choose to utilize their capabilities.

González Salinas, María Camila 30 December 2018 (has links)
The research seeks to lay the foundations of a hotel that, through the provision of single-person modules, will be able to meet the growing specialized demand of passengers in transit in Jorge Chávez International Airport. The business is based on the modality of not having to make a previous reservation to receive the service, since the client will be able to register autonomously at the moment of approaching the reception for which he will only have to enter his data. This is done with the aim of providing customers with a less stressful environment before traveling. The hotel has three floors, the first has divided areas for each activity, the second for rest and passenger hygiene where you can also rest and be distracted in the halls of the corridors, the third repeats everything of the second. It is worth mentioning that at the time of registration the customer will receive a bracelet, where they can consume the products, enter the capsule, open the locker on this bracelet, the amount consumed during the stay is charged. Each client is obliged to take a shower before entering the module to spend the night, which is why they will be given personal hygiene items such as bathrobe, towel, shampoo bag, espadrilles and soap. Among the services offered by the hotel, you will have the cafeteria, the dining room and the bar for 24 hours .. Being just seconds away from all international doors while offering all the amenities to work, relax, sleep and refresh will be the right thing to offer so that the traveler can reach their next destination in the best way. The study has been divided into 5 chapters namely: Description of the problematic reality; Investigative frameworks; Design strategies; Programming; Conclusions and contributions As a great conclusion it has come to indicate that the design of a lodging by modules not only responds to the prevailing tendency in the Hub of the World airports and that our contribution will serve to align the Jorge Chávez in that level; but also by force of demand its construction becomes very necessary. / Tesis
