Ying Chen et Ook Chung sont deux auteurs québécois d'origine asiatique qui ont fait l'objet d'études comparées en raison de leur statut d'écrivain migrant et de leur appartenance à une aire culturelle commune. Bien que leurs oeuvres mettent fréquemment en scène des narrateurs-personnages marginaux et en situation d'exil, celles-ci s'inscrivent au coeur d'intérêts actuels en littérature contemporaine qui permettent de les aborder au-delà de la culture d'origine des auteurs. S'intéressant à la marginalité du narrateur autodiégétique dans Un enfant à ma porte (2009) et dans La Trilogie coréenne (2012), notre mémoire a pour objectif d'étudier l'altérité des narrateurs et de montrer de quelle façon ceux-ci se retrouvent en décalage par rapport à leur récit. L'analyse de la figure de l'étranger dans le roman de Chung et de la folle dans celui de Chen, plus particulièrement de leur prise de parole respective, conduit à montrer en quoi l'altérité des narrateurs-personnages n'est pas que culturelle. L'altérité dans ces romans témoignerait plutôt d'une posture ontologique beaucoup plus fondamentale et générale, qui se répercute à la fois sur le rôle du personnage dans le récit et sur sa fonction de narrateur. Menée en deux temps (le personnage Autre puis le narrateur Autre), notre étude permet d'établir un lien entre l'inadéquation énoncée et la compétence narrative.

A print copy of this title is available from the UO Libraries, under the call number: KNIGHT PQ673 .C53 2007 / This dissertation is an analysis of the ways in which the remembered past of childhood is inscribed in four francophone novels written at the turn of the twenty-first century: Nina Bouraoui's L'âge blessé and Garçon manqué, Ying Chen's Le champ dans la mer, and Gisèle Pineau's L'espérance-macadam. These texts belong to a substantial corpus of contemporary narratives in which the remembering of childhood experiences plays a central role. Within that corpus we find a new approach to childhood emerging, one in which an unfamiliar past returns through the remembered voice of a wounded child. This voice overwhelms the text, fracturing the narrative through the irruption of images that it cannot contain. This dissertation is a study of the characteristics of this new "aesthetics of rupture." Memories of childhood in these texts are overshadowed by shattering past events that went unrecognized and unacknowledged. As a result of the wounds inflicted upon the child, the adult narrator remembers the past through physical symptoms of pain. Far from suturing the wounds of the past, remembering childhood becomes an incessant confrontational engagement with past traumas. The reader is then able to hear the scream of the wide-eyed child through a process of empathetic identification with the narrator's visceral memories. My introductory chapters provide a historical context to the development of representations of childhood in French and Francophone literature. Chapter III studies the ways in which childhood memories can actualize the past as a set of interruptive and destabilizing images. Theories of the non-representational revelation of the past serve as a starting point to my reading of Bouraoui's L'âge blessé. Chapter IV concentrates on the affective quality of memories so as to understand the narrator's ambivalent affective relationship to the past of childhood in Chen's Le champ dans la mer. Chapter V attempts to capture the ways in which the memory of a child's voice can be heard as a literary scream in Bouraoui's Garçon manqué. Chapter VI is a reading of Pineau's L'espérance-macadam in which I take into account the unseen gaze of the child to consider the role of hope in this text. / Adviser: Karen McPherson

En Amérique du Nord aux XX et XXIe siècles, les auteurs étudiés : Ying Chen (La mémoire de l’eau, L’ingratitude et Quatre milles marches : un rêve chinois), Dany Laferrière (Comment faire l’amour avec un nègre sans se fatiguer, Pays sans chapeau et Je suis fatigué), et, Wajdi Mouawad (Incendies, Littoral et Je suis le méchant) avancent des oeuvres qui sont l’expression de voix, à la fois contrastantes, divergentes dans la littérature nationale québécoise. Prenant leur distance par rapport à des représentations stéréotypées de leur époque telles que la littérature d’exil et la littérature du voyage, les auteurs migrants campent des histoires à travers lesquelles s’offrent des images nouvelles de la ville nord-américaine, des lieux emblématiques, une rencontre à l’autre. L’auteur migrant se livre, d’ailleurs, à l’instar de sa trajectoire éclatée dans la ville, à un jeu avec le lecteur en endossant plusieurs rôles, plusieurs figures auctoriales. L’écriture migrante se révèle palimpseste : elle intègre différents modèles littéraires tout en les dépassant. Dans sa construction interne, dont le processus de création, on retrouve ce dérobement aux normes littéraires. Enfin, elle offre une vision du monde réconciliatrice et bienveillante en faisant cohabiter les vivants avec les morts. / In the America of the XXe century, works of Ying Chen, Dany Laferrière and Wajdi Mouawad express voices that are, at the same time, different, various and deviating for the ones of the quebecker’s national literature. Taking their distance toward stereotyped representations of their time, like the exilic literature or the travel literature, migrant authors set stories where brand new images of the northern towns emerge, as well as emblematic places and the meeting of the other occurs. The migrant author reveals, just like his exploded path, a game with the reader by taking over several roles, several auctorial figures. His writing is therefore, a palimpsest: it’s integrating various literary models while it goes beyond. In its intern construction, in its creation process, we may discover how it shielded literary norms. Finally, the migrant writer offers a view of the world that is both reconcile and indulgent by making live together the alives and the deads.
