Stress in infants and parents : Studies of salivary cortisol, behaviour and psychometric measures

Mörelius, Evalotte January 2006 (has links)
The life of a preterm infant admitted to a neonatal intensive care unit may be stressful from the moment of birth. Ever since Hans Selye’s initial characterisation of the biological stress response, cortisol has been frequently measured as an indicator of stress responsivity. However, research of the stress response and cortisol in infants, especially those who are preterm and/or ill, has been scarce basically because of methodological issues. The first aim with this thesis was to investigate the acute stress response, as measured by salivary cortisol and behaviour, for preterm infants, healthy infants, and infants at high psychosocial risk in response to certain defined handling procedures. The second aim was to investigate the stress response, as measured by salivary cortisol and psychometric measures, for parents present during the handling procedure of their infants. The intention was to perform all investigations in an as naturally occurring situation as possible, which means that the studied procedures would have been performed irrespectively of the research. The present thesis includes six original articles. The results of the first study demonstrate that it is feasible to collect sufficient amounts of saliva and to analyse salivary cortisol in neonates using the presented method of collection and analysis. The second study shows that preterm infants, usually cared for in incubators, show no signs of discomfort and have variable cortisol responses during skin-to-skin care with their mothers. The mothers, however, experience stress and low control before their first skin-to-skin care with their preterm infant and do not relax completely until after the session. In the third study we found that preterm infants have higher baseline salivary cortisol as compared to healthy full-term infants. Moreover, preterm infants have higher and sustained pain response during a nappy change as compared to healthy full-term infants. The results of the fourth study shows that infants younger than three months, living in psychosocial high-risk families, have increased cortisol responses during a nappy change, performed by the mother. However, support with the aim of improving mother-infant interaction, dampens the stress response. The results of the fifth study show that oral sweet-tasting solution in combination with a pacifier dampen the levels of the stress hormone cortisol in three months old infants during routine immunisation. Moreover, parents experience more self-rated emotional stress before immunisation if it is their first child who is being immunised. The sixth paper shows that the material used for saliva collection (cotton buds with wooden or plastic sticks) is of importance when saliva is collected but for practical reasons not centrifuged within 24 hours prior to cortisol analyse. The present thesis shows that it is practically feasible to collect saliva and to analyse the stress hormone cortisol in infants. The interpretation of infants’ and parents’ salivary cortisol responses to different handling procedures are discussed in relation to shortand long-term consequences, neonatal intensive care, preterm birth, attachment, mood, and pain.

Vliv tréninku na úroveň motorických dovedností hráčů florbalu v dětském věku / The impact of a training on a children floorball player's level of motor skills

Čermáková, Eliška January 2019 (has links)
The popularity of floorball has been growing significantly. Floorball, as any other sport, is associated with certain health risks. Not only acute injuries but also chronic injuries have been connected with practicing sports. There is high risk of development of muscle imbalance, cumulative trauma disorders and chronic overuse, that negatively influence motor development of child. The aim of this diploma thesis was to evaluate the influence of corrective exercise on motor functions of young floorball players. Methodology: Two top Czech floorball teams of young boys has participated in the research. The observed group was composed of 79 players (Group A - 40 players, Group B - 39 players) aged 11 and 12 (the average age of 12,1 ± 0,6 SD). Short version of motor funciton test BOT-2 has been used to examine participants. Additional anamnestic data were used to run detailed analysis of factors influencing the test results. Results: The players of Tatran Střešovice and FbS Bohemians scored average percentiles of 63,45 ± 26,1 SD and 65,5 ± 27,8 SD respectively. That implies no impact of corrective exercise on results of motor funciton test (p = 0,74).However, the corrective exercise has decreased the risk of injury (p = 0,0183). The athletes playing for the team for more than 3 years have significantly...

Diference rodičovských rolí v rodině se zdravým dítětem a v rodině s dítětem s mentálním postižením / Differences between Family with Healthy Child and Family with Mental Disabilities Child

HRKALÍKOVÁ, Jana January 2014 (has links)
The families with a mental disability child go through the information of child´s diagnosis very hard test which can means even the marital break-up. These mentioned families should manage the crisis, but successful managing of this situation can be very strengthening element. The families with a mental disability child manifest in different way than the families with healthy children, because the birth of child with a mental disability intervenes the peace of the whole family. This fact can remark the family even this way, which the physical problems can appear by the parents or they can incline to risk change of their behaviour. The parents? roles also could change and exists also risk, that brothers and sister of child with a mental disability can follow contacts with difficulties. These families have their own particularity, because the birth of child with a mental disability means great stress for these families. The theoretic part of this work pays attention to a mental disability and its classification. Further are the welfare services available, which can families with a mental disability child use of. It is not also left out the role of family, the importance of parental roles and brotherly and sisterly constellation. I describe style of upbringing and further I concern the particularity of family with a mental disability child in my dissertation likewise the role of brother and sister by the child with a mental disability. There are also stages of acceptance with the diagnosis of a mental disability and risk behaviour of parents these children with a mental disability as results of managing critical situation described and the related physical problems. The target of dissertation is finding out if exists diametrically differences between parental roles by the care about a mental disability child and the healthy child. The intermediate target is finding out if the families with a mental disability child are more predisposed to a presence of social pathological syndromes. The theory expects following fact that the care for a mental disability child has provided by overall in majority by mothers. Families with a mental disability child incline to risk change of their behaviour than by the families with the healthy child. Brothers and sisters of a mental disability child do less friendly relationships than of the healthy children. The approach to quantitative study was used at all. The strategy of questionnaire: The questionnaire inquiry was performed by the 20 families with healthy children and by the 20 families with a mental disability child. The filled questionnaires had evaluated using the elementary statistics of software programmes SPSS and Excel. I found out more conflicting relationships between brothers and sisters in the families with a mental disability child than in the families with healthy children. Brothers and sisters of a mental disability child care more about their mental disability brother or sister than the elder brothers and sisters care about their younger ones. Likewise the brothers and sisters with a mental disability brother or sister have less friendly relationships than the children with healthy brothers and sisters. Families with healthy children enjoy more harmonious parental care than by the families with a mental disability child and mainly mothers do it. The grandparents act on behalf of parents with healthy children more often than in the families with a mental disability child, there exists often absence caring grandparents. The same is the fact that both compared families models using mostly democratic style of upbringing. Psychical problems exist more often by the parents with a mental disability child.

Úmluva o občanskoprávních aspektech mezinárodních únosů dětí a mezinárodní právo soukromé / The Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction and the International Private Law

Jirmanová, Miroslava January 2012 (has links)
Since the late 20th century there has been an increase migration in of people due to the development of new technologies, easier ways of travel and the opening of national borders. People travel abroad for jobs, studies, or exploring new countries. During these travels some of them find life partners abroad, settle down there, conclude marriages and establish families. It often happens that such marriages end in divorce. If children are born in such a wedlock questions arise as to who will take care of them, who will pay maintenance etc. In some cases a parent decides to solve a conflict situation in such a way that he/she moves with the child without consent of the other parent to another place within the country or he/she decides to move to another country, usually to the country of his/her origin. He/she wants to settle there with the child and to legalize staying there. Such removal where national borders are crossed is considered to be international child abduction. The basic document dealing with the issue of international child abductions is the Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction (hereinafter the Hague Convention) adopted on 25 October 1980 and currently acceded to by 87 states. The Hague Convention establishes rules according to which cases of...
