Responses of child welfare organisations in KwaZulu-Natal to the challenges of HIV/AIDS.

Gordhan, Husheila. January 2006 (has links)
Child Welfare organisations in South Africa, including KwaZulu-Natal, are being faced with various challenges. Since 1994, after the first democratic elections in South Africa, a major shift toward the developmental welfare approach was advocated in the White Paper for Social Welfare (Department of Welfare, 1997), in the provision of welfare services and programmes. The South African AIDS epidemic shows no signs of halting. At present, South Africa has the largest number of individuals living with the virus in a single country, with an estimated 5.3 million infections (UNAIDS, 2005). KwaZulu-Natal is ranked fourth. South Africa is facing an unprecedented AIDS crisis. The increasing numbers of HIV infected adults and children are having a devastating impact on child welfare organisations. Child Welfare organisations were already under-resourced, overstretched and overburdened, even before the AIDS epidemic emerged. The consequences of apartheid, especially in terms of mass poverty and HIV/AIDS add a further problem on an already divided and somewhat 'abnormal' society. In addition, the shift from the welfarist tradition of social work practice to the developmental paradigm has serious implications on the functioning of child welfare organisations, which are unable to cope with the existing caseloads. Hence there is a need to address the challenges and for specialised services in the arena of HIV/AIDS. The purpose of this study was to investigate the responses of child welfare organisations in KwaZulu-Natal to the challenges of HIV/AIDS. The ecosystems perspective provided the theoretical framework within which the study was conducted. This perspective guided the selection of the study samples and the analysis of data. The study adopted a descriptive design, and the triangulated research paradigm incorporating both the quantitative and qualitative methods, as this was the most appropriate approach for the study's focus, objectives and research questions. By combining these two methods, a general overall audit was achieved in addition to obtaining rich, in-depth information. Fifty-five child welfare organisations in KwaZulu-Natal constituted the main sample for the quantitative study. Personal in-depth interviews were conducted with 5 senior social work personnel from the child welfare organisations. There were conclusive findings in this study that indicated that overall, child welfare organisations in the KwaZulu-Natal region are making concerted efforts to respond to the challenge of HIV/AIDS in the broad areas of policy implementation and modification, specific programmes for children, special facilities for children affected by HIV/AIDS, awareness and prevention programmes and community projects. However difficulties in these areas were also experienced in the specific areas of providing adequate care, support and counselling with regard to children and families infected and affected by HIV/AIDS, staff inadequacy and training and facilities for pre and post test counselling. Some of the factors that have been responsible for impeding the overall success can be attributed to: high staff turnover, high caseloads, burnout and stress, lack of adequate resources, inadequate funding, lack of government support, poverty and inefficiency in the social security system. Recommendations for further research and for policy and practice are detailed. / Thesis (M.A.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, 2006.

A intenção é entender como, e em que medida, esses indivíduos assimilaram e utilizaram as formalizações do aparelho jurídico para constituir suas visões de mundo / Abstract: The main objective of this dissertation is to analyze the juridical instances on the careless child since the creation of the ¿Censo estatistico dos orfãos pobres¿ (Statistic census of the poor orphans), in 1866 till its extinction in 1899, from the crossing of criminal processes, tutelary actions and specific legislation about the child question elaborated in XIX century, present in the criminal code and in the Filipinas ordinances. Another concern is to recover how poor children came face to face with the intensification of these juridical performances. Through the analysis of what I name ¿social profile¿ of the children, I¿ll try to analyze not only the ethnic and age group characteristics, but also the everyday practices and strategies created by them. The intention is to understand how and how far those individuals assimilated and made use of these juridical formalizations in order to constitute their world visions / Mestrado / Historia Social / Mestre em História

O controle da infância = caminhos da medicalização / The control of childhood : ways of the medicalization

Orientador: Maria Lygia Quartim de Moraes / Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Filosofia e Ciências Humanas / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-19T01:13:53Z (GMT). Portanto, é possível entender o TDAH e seu tratamento (especialmente o medicamentoso) como mecanismos de biopoder / Abstract: Attention Deficit/Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) is a child mental disorder which has been increasingly drawing attention from medical clinics, schools and media. Being in constant active, seeming aloof and not obeying adults' orders are some signs, along with so many others, that indicate a child is a potential ADHD bearer. When it is considered that ADHD has a genetic neurological dysfunction cause, the problem becomes restricted to the individual, in his/her biological constitution. This gives psychiatrists authority to diagnose and prescribe treatments - the use of psycho stimulant drugs being the main one. However this approach disregards important social, historical, cultural, economical, and political questions. Therefore, in this dissertation I aim to analyze and understand ADHD, its diagnosis, its drugs and the medical (psychiatric) treatment given to children in order to denaturalize them and reveal their relations with contemporary society. In this way, some themes are investigated, such as the disorder clinical definition, the processes of social medicalization and the pathologization and stigmatization of some children's behaviors, and these children's images, establishing the dialogue among ADHD, society, and childhood. The methodology chosen covers an ethnographic qualitative research, with methods and techniques of participative observation at "Ambulatório de Psiquiatria Infantil do Hospital das Clínicas da Universidade Estadual de Campinas"; semi-structured interviews with health professionals from the above-mentioned clinic, children from six to twelve years old diagnosed as ADHD bearers and treated there, and their parents or legal guardians; as well as by interpreting children's drawings. Thus, from bibliographic and field research, it is understood that ADHD and its medicamental and psychiatric treatment are complex phenomena which surpass Biology and Medicine field limits because of their social, historical, and cultural roots. They are connected to a society which values the child as a developing human being into an active adult life, and conforms them to socially defined principles and rules about proper behaviors. This conformation gives little room to child expression and, moreover, label, punish, and try to correct deviant children, among them, children with ADHD. Hence, it is possible to understand ADHD and its treatment (especially medicamental one) as mechanisms of bio-power / Mestrado / Sociologia / Mestre em Sociologia

The Construction of Identity through Early Childhood Curriculum: Examining Picturebooks from a Critical Feminist Lens

Medellin, Kelly 12 1900 (has links)
Picturebooks are an important part of the classroom environment in early childhood education. They open doors to new experiences, nurture students' cultural identities, and invite students to explore connections across cultures. In the United States today, many of the picturebooks that are available to teachers and students in preschool classrooms come from the state curriculum that the school district has implemented. Shifting demographic trends have led many educators to recognize a need for more diversity of literature in classrooms. This study was conducted in response to this growing concern that books should better reflect the cultures and identities of the children who read them, with a particular emphasis on young female children of color. The research question guiding this study is: How do picturebook texts and illustrations in an early childhood curriculum represent the identities of female characters of color as viewed through a critical feminist theoretical lens? To investigate this question, I critically analyzed children's picturebooks from a current early childhood curriculum adopted by the state of Texas, focusing on representations of gender and race. The selected books were analyzed using critical content and critical visual analyses to consider how the text and illustrations together represent female characters of color. Although earlier studies of picturebooks have pointed out a deficit of authentic portrayals of female characters of color, this study found that books in the sample did show some attention to authentic cultural themes including motherhood, action and agency, and subjugated knowledge and culture. However, implications for practice and research included the need for more balanced representation of diverse cultures within the curriculum to better reflect preschool demographics, as well as the need for more classroom instruction on books that give voice and agency to young female children of color as they develop their personal and cultural identities.

Sports as a moderator of the effect of parent marital status and belongingness on achievement and behavior

Aud, Joelle E. 01 January 2015 (has links)
Parent marital status is a highly influential variable within the family context, as it can serve as a protective factor in many ways. However, it can also be a risk factor for youth. Despite the large body of literature that delineates the benefits of sports participation and the negative outcomes associated with divorce, researchers have yet to examine the impact of athletic participation on youth who have experienced familial disruptions, such as divorce, separation, and remarriage. Sports participation was chosen as a moderating variable in the present study, as it is believed to serve as a protective factor for those who experience parental divorce. Specifically, the present study aims to answer the following research question: Does sports participation moderate the effects of parent marital status and belongingness on achievement and behavior problems after controlling for sex, socioeconomic status, and maternal education? Many theoretical mechanisms support the hypothesis that positive outcomes are be associated with sporting programs, such as Social Capital Theory, as well as theories associated with 7 motivation and belonging. This study analyzed data collected as part of the NICHDSECCYD comprehensive longitudinal study. Specifically, the effects of parent marital status and belongingness on academic achievement were analyzed in AMOS 22, using a multiple group path model with sports participation as a moderator. Although results did not support sports participation as a moderator, findings supported previous research that connects intact, two-parent marriages with positive outcomes for youth.

Finding their voice: youth's perspectives on their participation at the Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada

Haberlin, Matthew January 2014 (has links)
This study examines the specific elements of youth’s experiences at the Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada (BGC) that contribute to the development of their social and emotional competencies. Social and emotional competencies include managing one’s emotions, developing concern for others, and making responsible, ethically informed decisions. Semistructured interviews were conducted with 10 respondents ranging in age from 16 to 18 years old. This study gave adolescents a voice, empowering them to contribute to a deeper understanding of the ways in which community youth programs can assist in positive youth development. Data analysis revealed three categories of themes: social setting at the BGC, interpersonal connections, and personal development. The CASEL model of social and emotional learning (SEL) was used as a conceptual framework, and evidence from the research themes was used to demonstrate how SEL skills may have been fostered at the BGC. The four elements of the BGC that were mentioned by respondents most frequently in relation to the development of SEL competencies were receiving and offering social support, acquiring successful coping skills, engaging in formal leadership opportunities, and developing conflict prevention and resolution strategies. The results of this study have implications for theory and practice. The information presented in this study can guide onsite workers to focus on specific aspects in their interactions with youth and inform future youth program planning. / x, 278 leaves ; 29 cm
