The impact of frequency modulation (FM) system use and caregiver training on young children with hearing impairment in a noisy listening environment

Nguyen, Huong Thi Thien 01 July 2011 (has links)
The two objectives of this single-subject study were to assess how an FM system use impacts parent-child interaction in a noisy listening environment, and how a parent/caregiver training affect the interaction between parent/caregiver and child. Two 5-year-old children with hearing loss and their parent/caregiver participated. Experiement 1 was conducted using an alternating design measured three communication behaviors (e.g., child's vocalization, parent/caregiver's initiation, and parent/caregiver's response) across four listening conditions (e.g., HA+Quiet, HA+Noise, FM+Quiet, and FM+Noise). Experiment 2 was conducted using a comparison within and between conditions to re-measure the communicative behaviors across the listening conditions after the parent/caregiver training. Findings of this study point to three major conclusions. First, FM system use (i.e., FM-only mode) facilitated FM01 child's ability to maintain same level of interaction in a noisy as good as in a quiet environment. Second, parent/caregiver training enhanced the impact of FM system use for one child (FM01), although parent/caregiver initiation increased for both. Third, it is important to verify the function of both FM system and HA microphones to ensure access to FM advantage.

Rydén, Sofia January 2021 (has links)
The number of hard of hearing students with a school placement in mainstream schools instead of a placement in special schools or in a class adapted for hard of hearing students are increasing. The differences between the school forms depend on how the auditive environment is adapted to improve the opportunities to hear and how. The special schools and the classes adapted for hard of hearing students do also offer teachers with specialist competence regarding hearing loss and its consequences for the individual. This competence is not given in the mainstream schools and furthermore, there is no national overall responsibility with an aim to review how schools provide this group of students with opportunities for learning and participation, which indicates that the schooling of these students is not equal or equivalent at all. The purpose of this study is to contribute with knowledge in how teachers in mainstream schools perceive the work of teaching these students and make visible developmental areas but also factors that enhance the learning and participation in the classrooms. The method used for this study is qualitative through semistructured interviews with six junior high school teachers and one high school teacher from different parts of Sweden. The results and the analysis of the interviews show that there are a number of development areas for the schools to work with in order for this group of students to receive an education that gives them the same conditions for knowledge development and identity development as their classmates in accordance with the School Education Act. The results also show a number of success factors that, when applied, enable participation and learning in teaching, regardless of hearing function.

Vývoj a výchova dítěte s duálním smyslovým postižením z pohledu matky / Education and Development of the Child with Dual Sensory Disability from Mother's Point of View

Zvelebil, Maxmilián January 2020 (has links)
The diploma thesis deals with development and education in families with a child with dual sensory impairment, namely, from mother's point of view. The objective is to analyse stories of selected mothers of children with this particular disability, to explore the course of development and education involving deafblind children from different points of view (pedagogical, psychological etc.). The author of this thesis tries to find out about mothers' experiences and models of behaviour during pregnancy and afterwards. It focuses on acceptance of the disabled child within (and possibly outside) the family. In addition, the thesis explores reactions of mothers and others to a child with disability, it outlines the subsequent course of development and education in various periods of life. The particular emphasis is put on specific ways, by which these mothers developed their children during different activites (plays, conpensatory senses development, communication system development, independence of deafblind children etc.). It also describes developmental delays (emotional, social and cognitive functioning). Education options for deafblind are also mentioned. The stories are then compared to each other, as well as to selected literature from different countries. At the end of this thesis, practical...
