Exercises for Preparing Singers to Perform Contemporary Choral Music

Ivey, Milvern K. 08 1900 (has links)
This treatise has been prepared largely because of an increasing interest in contemporary music and an awareness on the part of many music educators of its merits in the curriculum of public schools and colleges. Since contemporary music is a controversial subject among directors, it has become necessary to search for specific, positive approaches to the teaching of contemporary music in high school.

Choral Problems in Handel's Messiah

Williams, John J. (John Joseph) 05 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to investigate, through stylistic analysis, the choral problems in twelve selected choruses from George Frederick Handel's oratorio, Messiah. The twelve choruses were selected for analysis in this study after consultation with several authorities in the field of choral music and on the basis that they are representative of problems encountered in the remaining choruses. Each of the twelve choruses was analyzed individually. Chapter I of this study presents the purpose of the study, the sub-problems involved, definitions of terms, delimitations, the basic hypothesis of the study, the basic assumptions of the study, methodology and the plan of the report. Chapter II of this study contains a brief biographical sketch of Handel, a discussion of the circumstances surrounding the composition of Messiah, and a survey of the Handelian oratorio Chorus. Chapter III presents the results of the analysis relevant to a discussion of each of the twelve choruses followed by a sectional presentation of the choral problems. In Chapter IV, a summary, some conclusions and recommendations are offered. Appendices A and B present reviews of selected recordings and vocal-piano editions of Messiah respectively.

Psychologické aspekty zpívání v pěveckém sboru / Psychological aspects of singing in a achoir

Randáková, Eliška January 2019 (has links)
This dissertation focuses on the psychological asepcts of non-professional choral singing, especially on the relationship between non-professional choral singing and well-being. At the theoretical part of the dissertation, choral singing and well-being are defined. There are also introduced selected concepts and contexts of well-being. The theoretical part of the dissertation concentrates primarily on the relationship between non-professional choral singing and well-being. There are, therefore, discussed researches dealing with the benefits of choral singing, motivation for choral singing and choral singing negatives. The theoretical part of the dissertation also deals with the other aspects of choral singing (characterics of a choral singer), social factors of choral singing and measuring of benefits of choral singing. The empirical part of the dissertation consists of two parts. In the I. part of the research (quantitative nature), the demonstration of the relationship between non-professional choral singing and well-being was tested. Choral singers (n = 148) were thererefore compared with the control group of non-singers in the level of well-being and experienced stress. The measuring was repeated with choral singers (n = 72) after one year. In the II. part of the research (qualitative nature),...

Man känner sig kanske lite viktigare : Hur elever upplever att körsången i gymnasieskolan påverkar studieprestationen

Ågren, Sofia January 2013 (has links)
Research shows how music influences our total well-being and our potential. There are studies that show a connection between music and achievement and statistically students in music programs show better academic results in all subjects than other students. This study has looked into how high school students perceive choral singing in school, and specifically if they feel that choral singing can affect their total scholastic achievements. The study focuses on obtaining a deeper perspective on how these students view if their own personal development is connected to their choral singing in school. What traits and abilities does choral singing promote? The results have been related to current research about motivation, performance, and success. Does choral singing contribute to the improvement of students’ overall scholastic performance? The results show that choral singing has many effects, whereby some can be viewed as achievement-boosting. Broadly speaking, choral singing is perceived to be meaningful by the test-subjects, which leads to a high degree of responsibility. Choral singing stimulates both mentally and physically, and generates positive emotions which contribute to feelings of satisfaction and well-being. Choral singing fulfills many needs, such as security, community, and appreciation, which are said to be prerequisites for being motivated to achieve. It is difficult to prove if this combination is responsible for affecting the students’ scholastic results, but since choral singing generates abilities that permeate a student’s overall character and attitude, it is viable to draw this conclusion.

As considerações finais apontam que, por meio dos jogos, o regente pode estimular: percepção rítmica e melódica, socialização, expressão corporal, técnica vocal, entre outras habilidades que favorecem o desenvolvimento do canto coral infantil / Abstract: Brazil is a country that still few studies to analyse and discuss pedagogical proposals of teaching practices for children's choirs. This qualitative research aimed to study the function and development of didactic games used during children's choirs rehearsals, estimulating necessary skills to the choral practices. Analyzing the existing bibliographies related to games, music education, choral pedagogy and field research, we intend to understand the possibility and function of the didactic game as a proposal of meaningful and dynamic teaching to develop the group performance. We used semi structured interviews, intending to understand needs, possibilities and pedagogical training to encourage the inclusion of games at the rehearsals. The interviewees were children's choir conductors who work at the schools linked to the Eastern Board of Education at Campinas city. All the data were analyzed by categorization and discussed from the literature of Laville and Dionne (1999). From this analysis, we discovered that conductors have little understanding about the vast possibilities of using the games pedagogically. They are used but only to entertain and motivate, disjointed of the repertoires' musical needs that are being developed. At this work, we describe proposals of games developed by the author in order to contribute to the practice of children's choir singing. We suggest that conductors may use games to stimulate the rhythmic and melodic perception, the socialization, body language, the vocal technique and other skills that foster the development of children's choir singing / Mestrado / Fundamentos Teoricos / Mestre em Música

We sing so well together : About conscious or subconscious cooperation between chorals singers and about formal and informal leaders in the choral voice

Zadig, Sverker January 2011 (has links)
Aim of the research: This essay describes what can happen between the singers in a choral voice and how the individuals differ in taking initiative and acting in leading roles. Method: I have done qualitative interview studies with conductors and singers, and also recording studies. The recording sessions have been done in following choir rehearsals in a Swedish upper secondary school, and with a simultaneous video recording to be able to also take notice on eventual visual signs between the singers. With close up headworn microphones and by multi track recordings it have been possible through an analyzing program to watch graphically exactly how each individual sings and to compare the singers with each other. The recordings and analyses have been done using Cubase5 and Variaudio with printouts of the same sequence of the music the single voices in the same choral voice. Results: My informants all speak of formal and informal leaders in the choral voice. Many of them also talk about these leaders as leading the choral voice and also with their personal voice and timbre, give color to others. It is possible to graphically view differences in attacks and intonation, and also to notice when someone is ahead and “pulling” others to follow. This leading role can be both positive and negative, a confident but not so good singer can unfortunately bring along other singers to take wrong steps in the music.
