This dissertation is a biography of Beyers Naude, from his birth in 1915 .
until 1977, focusing attention on the period 1963 to 1977, when he was
director of the Christian Institute. The study examines how Naude, whose father championed Afrikaans, became a leading minister in the Dutch Reformed Church (DRC). It examines the challenges which confronted Naude over the DRC's support fqr apartheid. The dissertation documents the factors that led Naude to reject apartheid and clash with the DRC, the Broederbond and the National Party government, culminating in his banning in 1977. It assesses the contribution he made to debates on apartheid in church and political circles and explains how he increasingly supported black initiatives to end white rule. The dissertation shows that Naude's background and leadership qualities enabled him to have an impact on the church and political scene as apartheid became a burning issue at home and abroad. / History / M.A. (History)

Text in English / This dissertation investigates the problem of significance conflict resolution as a meaningful ministry of the Church in ecclesial, social and political conflict.
Recognising the fact that conflict has been an experience of humankind since the beginning of time the research focuses on the Church's role in socio-political conflict during the years of the National Party rule in South Africa. A number of theological and practical questions arise from the problem of conflict and its resolution in relation to the Church. The question is raised: does conflict resolution as a concept and strategy have a credible theological content. In order to explore this problem the dissertation first develops a theology of conflict. The theology of conflict forms the basis for a theology of conflict resolution. The thesis
is that conflict, inherent in all human experience, is not good or evil. Rather it has the potential for destruction and transformation. It is the transformatory possibility that needs to be promoted.
The thesis examines conflict resolution strategies of leading theorists and
practitioners and tests them as viable approaches to be adopted by the Church.
However it finds that conflict resolution will be accepted as a role of the Church if it can be formulated in convincing theological principles.
An analysis of reconciliation and conflict resolution focuses on the way
reconciliation is perceived in the political context. It then probes the theological relationship between reconciliation and conflict resolution. Reconciliation is more than conflict resolution. The scope of reconciliation includes (a) the initiative of God, (b) addressing the predicament of alienation, brokenness and distress ( c)
through the Cross and Resurrection of Jesus Christ the Mediator (d) who reconciles the universe to God.
However, conflict resolution has an indispensable role in the reconciliation process.
Through the ministry of conflict resolution the Church facilitates confrontation between individuals or groups and contributes towards transformation in relationships where there is conflict.

Gestaltet wurde die gegenwärtige Wettbewerbsordnung im deutschsprachigen Raum massgeblich von den neoliberalen Ökonomen Alfred Müller-Armack, Walter Eucken und Friedrich August von Hayek. Diese Literaturstudie untersucht die Wettbewerbsordnung dieser drei Ökonomen, deckt ihre ethischen Prämissen auf und diskutiert diese aus theologisch-ethischer Sicht.
Im ersten Teil wird der vielschichtige Begriff Neoliberalismus sowie der Wettbewerb wirtschaftsgeschichtlich eingeordnet und die ausgewählten Texte einer wissenschaftlichen Textanalyse unterzogen. Tabellarisch und nach Themen geordnet werden die Thesen der Einzeluntersuchungen zusammengefasst. In fünf Themenbereichen zeigen sich signifikante Überschneidungen bei allen drei Ökonomen. Diese ausgewählten fünf Themenbereiche werden im zweiten Teil theologisch-ethisch diskutiert. Damit theologische Ethik und Ökonomie zu einem konstruktiven Austauschverhältnis gelangen können, wird vorgängig die Reichweite und Grenze einer biblisch-theologischen Arbeitsethik diskutiert. Zudem wird die biblische Perspektive zur Arbeit und zum Wettbewerb eruiert. Abschliessend werden der Kirche wie auch der Wirtschaft Impulse zur Gestaltung einer menschenwürdigen Arbeitsethik gegeben. / Competition is one of the distinctive forces of the working world. Amongst German speaking scholars, the current Wettbewerbsordnung (Engl.: order of competition) was shaped to a great extent by the neo-liberal economists Alfred Müller-Armack, Walter Eucken und Friedrich August von Hayek. This literature study examines the Wettbewerbsordnung of these three economists, uncovers their ethical premises and discusses these from a theological ethical point of view.
The first section puts both the complex term ‘Neoliberalism’ and competition into an economic historical context. It also contains a scientific analysis of the chosen texts. The theses of the individually examined texts are summarised in tabular form and classified by subject area. In five areas, all three economists present significant overlap.
In the second section, these chosen five areas are discussed from a theological ethical perspective. In order to enable a constructive exchange between theological ethics and economics, the analysis of the abovementioned five areas is preceded by a discussion of the scope and limits of a biblical theological work ethic. Further, this Master thesis traces the biblical perspective on work and competition. This study sets out to contribute to the expansive development of Systematic Theology and Black Theology, particularly in the struggle for economic justice in the democratic South Africa. The liberation of black people in South Africa and across the globe is the substantive reason for Black Theologies‘ existence and expression. The study‘s reflections on economic justice and Black Theology as sites of the intellectual focus and analysis is central to understanding the conditions of existence for the majority of South Africa‘s citizens, as well as understanding whether the fullness of life based on dignity and freedom as articulated in biblical witness, particularly John 10:10 is manifest for black people in South Africa. The study also seeks to identify, describe, analyse and understand the emancipatory theories and praxis, which entail a plethora of efforts they undertake to liberate themselves. Understanding and engendering the nexus of social practice and theological insights in the articulation of Black Theology as a particular expression of systematic theology, and drawing attention to the ethical foundations undergirding Black Theology, are important in demonstrating Black Theology‘s role and task as a multi-disciplinary discipline which encompass and engender dialogue within and between theory and praxis, and theology and ethics. This study thus suggests that since the locus of Black Theology and spirituality is embedded in the life, (ecclesial and missional) work (koinonia) and preaching (kerygma) of black churches, they have the requisite responsibility to engage in the efforts (spiritual and theological) in the struggle to finding solutions to the triple crises of unemployment, inequality and poverty which ravage the quality and dignity of life of the majority black people in post-apartheid South Africa. This study therefore concludes by asserting that, there are a variety of viable options and criteria relevant for facilitating economic justice in South Africa. These strategies include transformational distribution of land to the majority of South Africans, the implementation of heterodox economic policies which engender market and social justice values in the distribution of economic goods to all citizens. It also entails prioritization of the social justice agenda in economic planning and economic practice. In theological language, economic justice must involve the restoration of the dignity and the wellbeing of the majority of South Africans, who remain poor, marginalised and disillusioned. It also entails promoting justice as a central principle in correcting the remnants of apartheid injustices, which limit transformational justice which enables and facilitates equality, freedom and economic justice for all South African citizens. / Philosophy, Practical & Systematic Theology / M. The struggle between church and state continued during the thirteenth century. The crusades continued in the East with the advance of Islam. Crusades were also called for to put an end to heresies, in particular the Albigensian heresy. Unfortunately the established orders, such as the Cistercians, failed to combat heresy and to solve the problems of corruption in the Church. Scholastic theology developed with the establishment of the universities. These events influenced the thirteenth century. During the thirteenth century spiritual renewal began with Pope Innocent III. Councils like the Fourth Lateran Council defined church teaching and addressed corruption of the clergy. However, one of the most important sources of spiritual renewal came from the mendicant orders who had been given permission by Pope Innocent III to operate in the Church. These orders contributed immensely to education in the universities and through the Catholic laity culture advanced. / Die stryd tussen kerk en staat het voortgegaan gedurende die dertiende eeu. Die kruistogte het voortgeduur in die Ooste met die aanruk van Islam. Kruistogte was ook aangeroep om sodoende ‘n einde te maak aan kettery, veral Albiganiese kettery. Ongelukkig die ontwikkelde heerskappye, soos die Cisteriaanse orde, het nie daarin geslaag om probleme soos kettery en korrupsie in die kerk op te los. Skolastiese teologie het ontwikkel met die vestiging van die universiteite. Hierdie gebeure het ‘n kardinale impak gehad op die dertiende eeu. Gedurende die periode, het geestelik hernuwing begin met Pous Innocent III. Owerhede soos die Vierde Laterniese Owerheid het godsdiens onderrig, gedefinieer en korrupsie aangespreek. Tog, was een van die belangrikste bronne van geestelike hernuwing, die Bedelmonnik Orde, wat toestemming van Pous Innocent III gekry het om in die kerk te handel. in many instances reflect very serious religious overtones. Each person or group claims
the right to react to socio-political issues on the basis of their own worldviews that are
shaped by their cultural backgrounds, religious belief systems and political ideals.
Human diversity serve to complicate matters even more and has in many instances found
expression in political and religious intolerance, a fact testified to by the large-scale
abuse of human rights that took place with increased intensity in the 20th century. Many
Christians have failed to challenge the injustices that have resulted from these political
ideologies and have instead opted to become 'apolitical' or simply hiding behind the
argument that politics and religion does not mix. The author through a careful study of
biblical political structures in the ancient Near East attempts to demonstrate the extent to
which political ideologies of communities were influenced by the cultural milieu within
which they existed. The feelings of ambivalence we experience in our faith are a direct
result of these influences. An understanding of political ideology from a biblical
perspective is essential to understand current world conflicts especially those that relate
to the Middle East region. The author also argues for a reconciliation of politics and
religion in the collective psyche of Christians. This would enhance a sense of sociopolitical
responsibility in terms of the biblical mandate. The responsibility of government
structures in terms of this mandate is also important and needs to be emphasised. The
primary responsibility of any government is the welfare of its citizens and the
management of public resources in an orderly, moral and efficient manner. A large
percentage of government officials find it extremely difficult to face up to the challenge.
The perspectives presented not only gives one insight into the historical development of
biblical political worldviews. but presents us with challenges to pursue opportunities for
peace and justice that would recognise and advance human dignity, human equality and
human responsibility. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die moderne samelewing is oorweldig deur konflikte van politieke ideologies. Hierdie
konflikte is in baie gevalle 'n weerspieëling van baie ernstige godsdienstige motiewe.
Elke persoon of groep behou hom die reg voor om te reageer op socio-politiese
aangeleenthede op grond van 'n eie wêreldsiening wat geskep word deur kulturele
agtergronde, godsdienstige geloofsstelsels en politieke ideale. Menslike verskeidenheid
maak hierdie aangeleenthede meer ingewikkeld en het in baie gevalle gelei na politieke
en godsdienstige onverdraagsaamheid. Dit het verder aanleiding gegee tot die
grootskaalse menseregte skendings wat plaasgevind het met groter intensiteit gedurende
die 20ste eeu. Vele Christene het nie daarin geslaag om die uitdagings van
ongeregtighede, wat voortspruit uit hierdie politieke ideologieë, die hoof te bied nie en
het verkies om of hulself as 'apolities' te verklaar of om te argumenteer dat politiek en

betrekking het op die Midde Ooste streek. Die skrywer stel ook voor die versoening van
politiek en die godsdiens in die kollektiewe psige van Christene. As gevolg hiervan word
die socio-politiese verantwoordelikheid van die Christen verhef in lyn met die bybelse
mandaat. Die verantwoordelikheid van regerings strukture in terme van hierdie mandaat
is ook belangrik en behoort beklemtoon word. Die primêre doel van enige regering is die
welvaart van sy burgers sowel as die bestuur van sy openbare hulpbronne op 'n ordelike,
sedelike en doeltreffende manier. 'n Groot aantal regeringsbeamptes vind dit moeilik om
hierdie uitdaging die hoof te bied. Hierdie perspektiewe, wat hier aangebied word, gee
nie net vir ons insig tot die historiese ontwikkeling van bybelse politieke wêreldsieninge
nie, maar daag ons uit om geleenthede vir vrede en geregtigheid wat menslike
waardigheid, menslike gelykheid en menslike verantwoordelikheid erken, na te jag.
