Some twentieth-century Christian interpretations of liberal political thought

Song, Robert January 1990 (has links)
A study of Christian interpretations of liberalism is important for social theology for two reasons: first, liberalism is the dominant political ideology of modernity, and (especially in the form "liberal democracy") is the most prominent form of public self-definition in the West, its claims often being taken to be self-evidently true. Second, liberalism is historically indebted to Christianity, and the two are susceptible of mutual confusion. A critical theological analysis of liberalism is necessary to ensure the authentically Christian nature of contemporary political theology. This analysis is conducted principally through a discussion of the criticisms of liberalism made by three Christian thinkers of the twentieth century, the American Reinhold Niebuhr (1892-1971), the French Jacques Maritain (1882-1973), and the Canadian George Grant (1918-1988). After an introductory chapter, chapter two presents an interpretation of liberalism, mapping the historical contours and varieties of liberalism from five liberal writers, and elaborating a loose framework of the conceptual structure of liberal thought. Chapter three examines Reinhold Niebuhr's criticisms of liberalism's alleged facile progressivism and optimistic conceptions of human nature and reason, and chapter four looks at George Grant's claim that John Rawls' liberal theory fails to provide the ontological affirmations necessary to defend human beings and liberal values against the dynamics of technology. Jacques Maritain's account of pluralism and the ideal of the secular state, and the contribution he can make to the current debate between liberals and communitarians, are the subjects of chapter five, while chapter six attempts to secure some theological purchase on the issues of Bills of Rights, judicial review, and the constitutional restraint of democratic majorities, with special reference to the British context. In the concluding chapter it is argued that the liberal account of justice is impossible to realize, and that central insights must be borrowed from the Augustinian tradition.

In this dissertation, the phrase 'Christian Citizen' refers to those Christians who possess a strong sense of identity, believing in Christianity and upholding the corresponding faith while fulfilling civic responsibility and loving one's country. Through gathering and investigating into the personal letters, works and reports and so on of Liu, this dissertation renders an in-depth exploration of Liu's analysis on national character, views on citizenship and his blueprint of the Civic Education Movement. More importantly, Liu did not resort to empty talk but walked the talk, integrating faith with daily life. Throughout his whole life, including, in the early days, the Career Guidance Movement and his work at the Y.M.C.A., his presidency at the University of Shanghai and fmally the righteous action in defending against Japanese invasion during the latter days, the quality of Liu, in being loyal to one's nation, displaying care and concern for the society, living out and walking one's faith whole-heartedly was evident. His life manifested the unification of the roles and functions of a Christian citizen of one's nation, with Christian citizenship vividly lived out. Special investigation would be made into a rarely noted work headed by Liu, Y.M.C.A.'s Civic Education Movement in the 1920s, under the slogan 'Saving Nation through Character'. The origins, effectiveness and characteristics of the Movement would be explored. This study concludes with revealing, through Liu's life, the characteristics of being a Christian citizen and examines the choice of the advocators of 'Saving Nation through Character'. / There is a saying: "One more Christian, one fewer Chinese". It implies a conflict between an Ascribed Identity (Chinese) and an Achieved Identity (Christian). The former is an inherited and irreversible blood relationship while the latter is acquired after birth, being a self-converted social role. Undeniably, conflict of identities brought about bewilderment and impact to Chinese Christians in late Qing and Early Republican eras, causing identity crisis. Role identification is a process of getting to know oneself in terms of cognition, attitude and behavior, affecting daily life and instilling meaning of life. Quite a number of researches in the past emphasized the mental struggle and torture suffered by Chinese Christians under the seemingly incompatibility of the two identities. However, identity crisis is by no means impossible to do away with or integrated. This research attempts to show that ascribed identity and achieved identity can be integrated harmoniously through identify negotiation. The case of Liu Zhan-en (1896--1938) clearly demonstrated roles of being a citizen on earth and that of heavenly kingdom need not be an either-or option. Christians are not only citizens of the eternal heavenly kingdom, but also contemporary citizens on earth. One can live in serving the Lord with piety while obeying legal requirements stipulated by the government. Devoted and sound citizenship could be harmoniously integrated to be 'Christian Citizen'. / 黃錦暉. / Adviser: Yuen Sang Leung. / Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 73-03, Section: A, page: . / Thesis (Ph.D.)--Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2010. / Includes bibliographical references (p. 221-252). / Electronic reproduction. Postcolonial biblical interpretation in the context of the Democratic Republic of the Congo : selected texts from Joshua 1-12

Bwalya, Laishi 11 1900 (has links)
The present research has been aimed at investigating how imperialism and colonialism are located both in the biblical text (cf. Joshua 1-12) and in present day interpretive postcolonial contexts such as that of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. An investigation was made of the unequal power dynamics at play between the Israelites who are depicted as mercilessly conquering the indigenous peoples of Canaan in the name of the deity, and the Canaanites. How were/ are such power dynamics played out in the Katangese, Democratic Republic of the Congo’s context in the relations between the then colonizers, that is, the Belgians as well as the neo-colonial African rulers and the Congolese peoples? It is argued that the Belgians assumed the role akin to that of the Israelite invaders as they mercilessly invaded the “promised land”, that is, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, ending with the brutal extermination of African peoples justified on biblical precedents. A conclusion is made that within the context of postcolonial biblical interpretation, the conquest narrative of Joshua 1-12 is one of the most traumatic stories in which violence is committed by one nation on another in the name of the deity. Postcolonial biblical criticism was found to be an appropriate approach in assisting the researcher to navigate through violent biblical texts with a view to coming up with a transformative reading of the texts in the (Katangese) context of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. / Old Testament and Ancient Near Eastern Studies / D. The influence of Pope Innocent III on spiritual and clerical renewal in the Catholic Church during thirteenth century South Western Europe

Laing, Ralph Steven Ambrose 10 1900 (has links)
The struggle between church and state continued during the thirteenth century. The crusades continued in the East with the advance of Islam. Crusades were also called for to put an end to heresies, in particular the Albigensian heresy. Unfortunately the established orders, such as the Cistercians, failed to combat heresy and to solve the problems of corruption in the Church. Scholastic theology developed with the establishment of the universities. These events influenced the thirteenth century. During the thirteenth century spiritual renewal began with Pope Innocent III. Councils like the Fourth Lateran Council defined church teaching and addressed corruption of the clergy. However, one of the most important sources of spiritual renewal came from the mendicant orders who had been given permission by Pope Innocent III to operate in the Church. These orders contributed immensely to education in the universities and through the Catholic laity culture advanced. / Christian Spirituality, Church History & Missiology / M. Th. (Church History)
