Enterprise wikis as a means of creating business value: The impact of the CIOBenjamin, Gideon, Zhou, Chenfan January 2012 (has links)
Mass collaboration has been made possible through social networking tools likewikis. With features that support the principles wikinomics, wikis are enabling largenumber of people to participate in the production process without necessarily beingat the same physical location. Organizations and IT managers are beginning to har-ness this new technology in a way that will create business value for their companies, helping them to produce goods and services that are valuable for their customers. This research sets out to explore the business values of using wikis in enterprises, andhow the CIOs and other IT managers who are responsible for handling the IT/IS re-sources of their firms leverage wikis to create business value. This was accomplishedby examining collaborations on wikis from two different perspectives: Firstly, fromthe CIO or IT manager’s perspective where we gathered their own views about thebusiness values of wikis and also assess their own impact on creating those businessvalues. Secondly, we examined the business values of wikis from the user’s perspec-tive by gathering the views of different wiki users. The main contribution of this research is to identify if any, the business values thatare obtained from using wikis in enterprises and to ascertain the impact of the CIOon the business values that are being created. / The report we did is research report which aims to investigate the impact of CIO and enterprise wikis for companies. / Master Thesis in Informatics

Analyzing CIOs¡¦ Social Network with the Perspective of Social Capital TheoryLi, Hai-Peng 29 August 2004 (has links)
It is not only a complicated but also long-term mission to implement the information system and system project. It involves a variety of interior and exterior problems, such as the supporting from decision management, users' resistance, conflict between departments, leadership of project members, outsourcing¡¦s cooperation, supporting of develop tools (Software & Hardware) and cooperation of supply chain. Therefore, we have defined the social network of the CIO as seven dimensions, which are CEO, users, cross dept. chiefs, MIS dept. employees, Supplies & Clients, Outsourcings & Consultant and Software/Hardware supplies.
The research tries to approach the topics from the angle of observer, starting from the social network of the CIO, by case study method, to process the detailed data analysis through a great different of CIO interviews. Thus we may find out and realize the circumstance CIO may faced and the phenomenal incurred in intercourse with the others, which intends to explore that CIO faces the challenge & response while they are trying to push information system in the enterprise. We also take the perspective of Social Capital consists of three dimensions which are structural dimension, cognitive dimension and relational dimension combined as a analyzing perspective to interpret and analyze how the CIO create and take advantage of his social capital to solve problems and achieve the goal eventually.
The first finding of the research is that the social network of the CIO was suitable and practicable analyzing perspective based on the three dimensions of social capital theory; secondly, the communication between the correspondents of the CIO social network and CEO is the most importance and the most difficulty as well. The enterprise culture, background, CIO network structure have the influence on intercourse benefit. It is inter-supported with the three dimensions of the social capital.
We hereby hope to achieve the following progresses with the research:
1. The reference to the qualified candidate of the CIO to an enterprise.
2. Target on the managers of information management and offer them a brief and simple analyzing perspective, in order to make an accurate diagnose & analysis to the problems.
3. The enterprise could take advantage of social capital to impulse the information system, so that it may reduce information management from any cognitive difference, conflicts between interfaces and get promotion of the service quality of the information department.

The Challenges and Response of A CIO In the Society of the Work Place ¡V by thecase of ERP ImplementationLin, Chin-Yao 31 July 2003 (has links)
IT application systems to be deployed and developd in an enterprise are involved of many factors and variables, even though IT systems are so important for the enterprises in today. Many companies opted to deal with the frighteningly complicated matter of ¡§machines and human¡¨ by creating a new position: CIO. This newfangled executive, companies hoped, would protect and prepare them for the coming technology revolution. But there still are debates on the responsibilities of CIO as the coming challenges between the continuous involvements of IT and fast changing of the global ecomics.
The enterprise has to change its internal organization, culture and operational processes once it wants to implement the ERP system. That will bring in many business risks during its adapting to the dramatic changes. In addition to that, ERP also have a direct, and often paradoxical, impact on a company¡¦s organization and culture. On the one hand, they expect to create flatter, more flexible, and more democratic organizations. On the other hand, they also emphasize more consistent with hierarchical, command-and-control organizations with uniform cultures.
Today, CIO are not only required to face and management the problems of integrations of many internal systems, but also are required to link the many various systems of various external business partners. With a back-to-basics focus, many CIO are concentrating on the top-3 concerns ¡V the business/IT alignment, value management, and leadership.
This paper explore the insight of a CIO in an organizational society, who is in charge of the success of the implement of the ERP into a company, what challenges he encountered and faced, and how did he respond to those challenges. This study relies on qualitative data collection from one case, A-company, in the forms of documented data, archival data, observtion, and interviews. The data are analyzed and interpreted through four structural conherent perspectives by the contextualism, by the standpoint of a CIO: industry environment, organization sructure, organizational culture, and organizational politics. This study discovered that the CIO in this case is like a picture of one fat racehorse pulling the milk cart in a farm.

Creating change in the SEIU and the AFL-CIO: The role of identityPeplow, Amber Leigh 29 August 2005 (has links)
The SEIU and the AFL-CIO utilized similar rhetorical strategies in creating identification to further change within their organizations. Despite similar rhetorical strategies, the change efforts differ substantially in terms of success. This dissertation argues that the audience, culture and organizational structure influence the success of the change effort. The dissertation provides implications for rhetorical communication in labor unions.

This study evaluated the acute and chronic effects of high intensity interval exercise on blood redox state of sedentary men. For this, the study was divided into two moments. First, 17 sedentary subjects underwent a session of high intensity interval exercise (HIIE), on a cycle ergometer, consisting of 8 stimuli, at 90% of maximum power, with intervals of active recovery of 75 seconds, at 30 watts. Before and immediately after exercise, blood samples were collected to evalute plasma thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) concentration and plasma total antioxidant capacity; and TBARS concentration and activity of the antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT), at erythrocyte lysate. Acutely, HIIE did not alter plasma TBARS concentration, although plasma total antioxidant capacity was significantly lower (p=0,05) immediately after exercise. In erythrocytes, TBARS concentration was significantly lower (p=0,03), while SOD activity was significantly higher (p=0,04) immediately after exercise. In the second moment, 9 individuals, who participated in HIIE, underwent a high-intensity interval training (HIIT) program, 3 times a week, during 4 weeks (12 training sessions). Redox state parameters were evaluated before and at the end of training. HIIT increased (p=0,05) plasma total antioxidant capacity and, in erythrocytes, TBARS concentration was lower (p=0,03) and catalase activity was higher (p=0,04) after training. Changes on blood redox state promoted by HIIT can be considered an additional beneficial response to this type of training, and HIIT may have a therapeutic role in clinical conditions associated with redox imbalance.

How the role of the chief information officer contributes to the organisationStrickland, Stephanos January 2011 (has links)
Since, the available informational and technological resources constitute a source of prosperity and differentiation for the organisations, the role of the Chief Information Officer (CIO) is becoming more crucial and vital. The thirty years of the CIO's existence have shown a path of changes and difficulties on defining and establishing the particular role within the organisational context. The present study examines the CIO role evolution over the last thirty years, analyses the CIO role at the present time and discusses the CIO role in the future. The examination of the evolution of the CIO role identifies four main areas of interest that are used as the conceptual framework of the study. These areas relate to business strategy, innovation and competitive advantage, relationships building and external environment. Based on a qualitative research approach, nine case studies of existing CIOs are conducted and analysed from the private and the public sector. The analysis provides insights about the responsibilities of the CIOs, currently, regarding each one of the role aspects and the furthermore, particular responsibilities for these aspects. The results of the analysis demonstrate that within the CIO role responsibilities there are activities such as active participation in the strategic planning, exploitation of information management as an enabler of innovation, active facilitation of consultation processes with the stakeholders and finally, networking with outside organisations such as suppliers and customers but also networking with peers to share best practices. Regarding the future of the CIO role, it is argued that the CIO role includes responsibilities relating to technology management and it is counterproductive to separate these responsibilities to another C-level executive such as a CTO. Finally, it is argued that the CIO role enhances the dynamic capabilities of the organisation by helping it to improve its learning processes and the way it transforms its information resources. The results of the study have implications to both industry and academia. The proposed CIO role model could be used by industry as a guideline for the job description of the role in question, as well as an evaluation scheme for the post holders. With respect to academia, the proposed role model could be used to identify the skills necessary for a CIO and thus, to help inform areas in which university educational programmes should focus on.

Organized Labor and U.S. Foreign Policy: The Solidarity Center in Historical ContextBass, George Nelson, III 01 November 2012 (has links)
During the Cold War the foreign policy of the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO), was heavily criticized by scholars and activists for following the lead of the U.S. state in its overseas operations. In a wide range of states, the AFL-CIO worked to destabilize governments selected by the U.S. state for regime change, while in others the Federation helped stabilize client regimes of the U.S. state. In 1997 the four regional organizations that previously carried out AFL-CIO foreign policy were consolidated into the American Center for International Labor Solidarity (Solidarity Center). My dissertation is an attempt to analyze whether the foreign policy of the AFL-CIO in the Solidarity Center era is marked by continuity or change with past practices. At the same time, this study will attempt to add to the debate over the role of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in the post-Cold War era, and its implications for future study.
Using the qualitative “process-tracing” detailed by of Alexander George and Andrew Bennett (2005) my study examines a wide array of primary and secondary sources, including documents from the NED and AFL-CIO, in order to analyze the relationship between the Solidarity Center and the U.S. state from 2002-2009. Furthermore, after analyzing broad trends of NED grants to the Solidarity Center, this study examines three dissimilar case studies including Venezuela, Haiti, and Iraq and the Middle East and North African (MENA) region to further explore the connections between U.S. foreign policy goals and the Solidarity Center operations.
The study concludes that the evidence indicates continuity with past AFL-CIO foreign policy practices whereby the Solidarity Center follows the lead of the U.S. state. It has been found that the patterns of NED funding indicate that the Solidarity Center closely tailors its operations abroad in areas of importance to the U.S. state, that it is heavily reliant on state funding via the NED for its operations, and that the Solidarity Center works closely with U.S. allies and coalitions in these regions. Finally, this study argues for the relevance of “top-down” NGO creation and direction in the post-Cold War era.
