Yet, while individuals who have demonstrated knowledge of warfare and prowess in battle have long been held in high regard by society and the members of their profession, it is those who have also demonstrated the ideals of citizenship and chivalry who serve as the icons for thoughtful military officers. The purpose of this thesis is to examine the evolution of the citizen-officer ideal- through a close study of historical and literary case studies. By establishing a common theme or values among completely separate exemplars of this ideal, a continuum joining Odysseus, Cincinnatus, Beowulf, and Gawain to Washington, Chamberlain, and Marshall might eventually be carried forward to the present and the modern military officer. Specific focus is given to the roles that classical notions of citizenship and the Code of Chivalry have played in shaping the ethos of the American officer. / Lieutenant, United States Navy

In this perspective, that the speech presented in the texts and images of the analyzed publication is part of the Good Neighbor Policy, it can be disclosed in the debate around the representation transmited and the internal influences that build it. The investigation arrises from the observation of the 48 editions of Em Guarda, the magazine published between 1941 and 1945, by the Office of the Coordinatior of Inter American Affairs. Starting from a quantitative analysis, in which it was identified the relapses, some of the editions were picked, based on the soldiers thematic, and the texts and imagens were put under a qualitative analysis. Understanding that this soldiers were presented as Heros-Citizen-Soldiers, the work focused on the debate of this concept, from the founding myth of being americans, and as a reference to the image of the cowboy. By this measures, its possible to understand some process and intentions of the americanization of the continent / Esta pesquisa se propõe a analisar a representação dos soldados americanos como a imagem de indivíduo modelar para os latino-americanos. Dentro da perspectiva de que o discurso apresentado na publicação analisada, tanto das imagens como dos textos, é parte da Política de Boa Vizinhança, pode-se desdobrar sobre a representação transmitida e as influências internas que a construíram. A problematização surge a partir observação das 48 edições da revista Em Guarda, produzida entre 1941 e 1945, pelo Office of the Coordinator of Inter American Affairs. A partir de uma análise quantitativa, na qual foram identificadas as reincidências, realizou-se uma seleção e uma análise qualitativa das imagens e textos então categorizados como parte da temática do soldado. Compreendendo que esses soldados são apresentados como Heróis-Soldados-Cidadãos, passou-se a trabalhar com o conceito, retomando questões desde os mitos fundadores do ser americano, se centrando na imagem do cowboy. The myth of the citizen-soldier resonates strongly in the American imagination and helps (re)construct America the nation. The construction of this myth in the historical context of World War II is especially prominent in contemporary American culture. The myth of the World War II citizen-soldier functions as an individualized discursive formation with specific rules of formation. I contextualize the construction of this individualized discursive formation within the historical era of World War II, and show how it excludes in direct contradiction to the ideals of civic nationalism that shaped the concept of national citizenship of that era. The United States military, which changed to an All Volunteer Force in 1973, functions as a neoliberal state apparatus in modern America. However, the United States Military still largely relies on the rules of formation and the ideals of civic nationalism in order to recruit volunteers for its forces. Traces of the myths of World War II, particularly the myth of the citizen-soldier, can still be found in the United States Army's recruitment material in its current "Army Strong" campaign despite the contradictory ideals of civic nationalism and neoliberalism. I conduct a Critical Discourse Analysis of three recruitment television commercials from the "Army Strong" campaign aired in 2009. I explain how the United States Army uses both the ideals of civic nationalism and the characteristics of neoliberalism in order to encourage potential recruits to join its ranks. / Master of Arts

This thesis examines the Citizen Military Forces (CMF) from 1947 until it ceased to exist under that name with the release of the report of the Millar Inquiry in 1974. This thesis examines three broad areas: the organizational changes that the CMF adopted or had imposed upon it; the political decision-making surrounding the CMF; and a social analysis of the CMF which questions the viability and validity of a number of the CMF???s long held precepts. The thesis will show that the majority of circumstances and decisions surrounding the CMF were beyond its control. For example, the CMF could not change the prevailing military thought of the post-war period which emphasized increasingly the role of smaller, professional, readily-available armies. The first three chapters recount the CMF???s ???heyday??? in which the Army, assisted by National Service after 1950, was based around it and its influence at the highest levels was strongest. The next two chapters chronicle the background to Australia???s adoption of the ???Pentropic??? organization and the repercussions this had on the CMF. Chapters Six and Seven examine the consequences of the introduction of a second compulsory service scheme and the concomitant result which precluded the CMF from operational service in Vietnam. Chapters Eight and Nine deal with the Millar Inquiry, which offered the CMF a new hope, but in some regards, brought forth little beneficial gains for the CMF. The final chapters analyze some of the characteristics unique to the CMF, such as territorial affiliation, high turnover rates amongst the rank and file and the concept of the ???brilliant amateur???. This thesis concludes that, despite the mixed performance of the CMF, there is still a place for the citizen soldier in contemporary warfare, but far more consideration at the highest political and military levels must be given to the peculiar and difficult, but by no means insurmountable, problems citizen soldiering encounters in Australia.
