A Small Scale CLEW Analysis of the Cape Town Region : Estimating the Effects of Climate Change on the Water ProvisionPetschelt, Lydia January 2013 (has links)
The knowledge of the influences climate change can have on a regional scale is still very limited. Generally it is known that the climate, land use, energy and water resources are intertwined. The CLEW strategy focuses on an approach to quantify these interrelations. In South Africa, experiencing a fast development, water resources are vital for a continuous prosperous growth. Through a methodological approach the local impacts of climate change on water supply and demand for the City of Cape Town are analysed. The focus lies on the Theewaterskloof Dam in the Riviersonderend catchment. For this study, the future climate data are generated in MarkSim for different SRES scenarios. Using the Water Evaluation And Planning system simulation software WEAP the catchment of interest is modelled to estimate future variation in water availability. For all scenarios the findings are consistent with prior studies forecasting an increase in the annual mean temperatures and a decrease in the annual precipitation. The reduction in annual precipitation consequently leads to a decreased water availability in the Riviersonderend catchment. Despite of the fact that the water resources are likely to diminish, the fixed annual water demand supplied by the Theewaterskloof reservoir is expected to be covered in the future without limitations.

Magister Artium (Development Studies) - MA(DVS) / Street trading is a highly contested activity in South Africa because of the different interests held by the government, other stakeholders and street traders. The contradictory nature of the relationship between government and street traders has led to exclusionary policies and practices put in place by the government to regulate street trading. These exclusionary practices have negative effects on the livelihoods of street traders. Female traders are more vulnerable and at greater risk than their male counterparts. Organised labour movements have largely focused on formal sector workers, leaving the rights of informal workers largely unregulated. In recent years there has been an emergence of informal sector organisations seeking to protect the interests of street traders and influence informal trading policy. Although seldom researched, a number of informal sector organisations have emerged in South African cities. / 2023

The use of social media by City of Cape Town Libraries has been recently established, and it has not yet been adequately assessed how Librarians have taken to this new implementation. Literature revealed that there is not enough research done in assessing Librarians’ perceptions on the use of social media for library work purposes, especially as a tool that is used to provide information services to users, and also how users responded to libraries’ adoption of social media in meeting their information needs.

Masters of Art / The study investigated the bookmobile library service of the City of Cape Town libraries as an information ground and the information seeking behaviour of Manenberg adult library users. The study explored the use of bookmobile services by identified information needs and information seeking behaviour of community members to identify whether the bookmobiles were able to meet them.
The study underpinned the Information Grounds Theory by Pettigrew to understand how individuals visiting the mobile library seek, acquire and exchange information while waiting for the bus as well as when they are in the mobile library.

The research found that the performance appraisal process in the City of Cape Town can be improved through addressing the process and improving the approaches followed by the managers in daily appraisals, which can be done by following the complete process and including all the steps it involves, and by having a positive attitude towards the performance appraisal process. This mini&ndash / thesis also provides a set of conclusions and recommendations for the performance management and performance appraisal system, particularly regarding appraisal process enhancement. It is hoped that the lessons learned through this study will inform current practices and provide information for future research at local government level.</p>
