The Madrigals of Claudio Merulo: an Edition of his 1566 and 1604 Books of Five-Voiced Madrigals with Commentary

Kiel, Dyke 12 1900 (has links)
Rather than generalizing about the works as a whole, each piece was studied on its own merits as well as its relation to Merulo's collective style. Included are translations of the poems and comparative studies of other settings where possible. The entire transcription of the two books of music is gathered into a separate volume to make the music easily accessible for performance.

O percurso estilistico de Claudio Santoro : roteiros divergentes e conjunção final / The stylistic path of Claudio Santoro : divergent branches and final conjunction

Mendes, Sergio Nogueira 12 March 2009 (has links)
Orientador: Silvio Ferraz Mello Filho / Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Artes / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-15T01:21:58Z (GMT). / Abstract: Taking as a starting point the most outstanding characteristic of Claudio Santoro's work which is the innumerous and ostensive changes of stylistic orientation, the present research demonstrates as its chief focus of interest the detailed demonstration of the stylistic path he took since the dodecaphonic beginning phase to the works composed in his maturity. Observing de considerable variety of styles grouped around the simple expression ?return to serialism? as conceived in the current model of division of his work one will propose a new segmentation for it, which will make possible a more appropriate and more inclusive idea of this production. Considering the explicit positioning of the composer in the face of the stylistic currents which were consolidated along his career, the demonstration of the chief compositional procedures will be made considering the connections established between each one of the Santoro periods and the musical poetics of the twentieth century. As a result of the investigations made in personal documents and in selected works, one will suggest, at the end of this work, the organization of the stylistic path in divergent branches of development, which will act in favor of the desired integrated view of the production. A similar proposition results from the firm conviction that after trying the most varied musical expressions, whose points of major antagonism can be represented by the two experiences, nationalist and avante-garde, Santoro would have realized the reutilization and conjuction of compositional pratice distributed and developed along fifty years (1939 - 1989) dedicated to the art of musical composition. / Doutorado / Musica / Doutor em Música

Cláudio Santoro: overview of his piano works and analysis of the fourth piano sonata

de Godoy, Mônica January 1994 (has links)
This document attempts to present the piano music of Claudio Santoro, a major twentieth century Brazilian composer. In order to illustrate the composer's background, the first chapter addresses briefly the situation of Nationalist music from the beginning of the second decade of this century to the 1940s, when Claudio Santoro came into the Brazilian scene. A general discussion about the Modernismo movement initiated by Mario de Andrade and the opposed views to the later school by the group Música Viva - headed by Hans Joachim Koellreuter - illustrates the politics and sociology in the music scene in Brazil during the first decades of the twentieth century. A biography, focusing mostly in a personal account by the composer, serves to illustrate Santoro's family background, environment, education and struggles to develop into a first class musician. The compilation of Santoro's piano music and an overview of its characteristics, introduces pianists to this Brazilian composer, whose body of works include mostly orchestral music. Although not a pianist himself, he composed several valuable piano works worthy of the repertoire. The Fourth Sonata represents one of Santoro's most popular piano works. The analysis of this work focuses on clarifying how the structure may be organized and how the chromatic idiom supports Santoro's deceptive tonal goals.
