Student Counsellors’ Perceptions of the Effects of Recording the Counselling Interview.

Gossman, Marion January 2009 (has links)
The use of audio and videotape recordings in counsellor education for the purpose of training and supervision is controversial. Although recordings give counsellors and supervisors direct access to the counselling session and therefore the skills of the counsellor, a number of concerns have been recorded both in early research (Betcher & Zinberg, 1988; Frankel, 1971; Gelso, 1973; Goldstein, 1988; Lamb & Mahl, 1956; Niland, 1971; Van Atta, 1969) and more recently in counsellors’ correspondence to the NZAC Newsletter (Anonymous, 2006; Grant, 2006) regarding the effects on counsellors, clients and on the counselling process itself. There is a scarcity of current research on whether or not recording of counselling or therapeutic interviews actually interferes with the counselling process. The few empirical studies of the effects of recording are inconsistent in their findings and their methodological flaws preclude meaningful interpretation of the literature as a whole (Goldstein, 1988). This qualitative research study focuses on one aspect of recording counselling interviews; the perceptions of counselling students. Thirteen counselling students enrolled on counsellor education programmes at five tertiary educational settings in Auckland and Christchurch, New Zealand participated in interviews. They indicated that they perceived the process of recording to be anxiety promoting, initially having an effect on their ability to be completely present in the counselling interview. They also reported that recording was extremely beneficial to the development of effective counselling skills. Counsellors perceived the process of recording to be a potential threat to the developing relationship between counsellor and client but many were able to manage this concern by establishing trust and rapport before introducing recording. The majority of the student counsellors perceived that they became more confident with the process over time, moving from a state of anxiety in initial recordings to a more relaxed style with practice. This has implications for future practice and for early introduction to frequent recording in counsellor education programmes.

CLIENTS’ EXPERIENCES OF SPIRITUALITY IN COUPLE’S THERAPY: A PHENOMENOLOGICAL APPROACH

Puckett, Jillian M. 01 January 2012 (has links)
While spirituality has been an increasingly researched topic within the field of marriage and family therapy, it has been largely overlooked within the context of couple’s therapy. The goal of the present study is to enhance the understanding of the role of spirituality in therapy by describing clients’ experiences of spirituality in couple’s therapy. The study utilized a phenomenological approach to come to a better understanding of the essence of clients’ experiences of spirituality in couple’s therapy. Semi-structured interviews with couples enrolled in couple’s therapy were conducted and analyzed. Four major themes emerged: spiritual experiences in couple’s therapy, perception of spirituality, spirituality as beneficial, and spirituality as a journey. Implications for clinicians and recommendations for future research are discussed.

Selection of Geriatric Rehabilitation Clients by Geriatric Clinicians in Emergency Departments

Graceffo, Eleanor Marlene 10 September 2010 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to compare the discharge outcomes of two client groups who were admitted to geriatric rehabilitation units (GRUs). The Emergency Department or ED Group were clients seen by WRHA Geriatric Program Assessment Team (GPAT) geriatric clinicians in EDs and admitted directly to geriatric rehabilitation units and the Acute Group were clients admitted from inpatient acute care units to geriatric rehabilitation units. The study design was a retrospective study using administrative data to examine two groups for the following discharge outcomes: discharged home, discharged to personal care home, and poor outcomes of either medical instability or mortality. The study results found that 70% of clients assessed by GPAT clinicians and admitted from the ED directly to a GRU were discharged home. Similarly, 68% of the clients admitted from acute inpatient units to a GRU were discharged home. The discharge home outcomes indicate that geriatric clinicians in consultation with team Geriatricians were able to select geriatric rehabilitation clients in a busy ED despite the need for an abbreviated evaluation period requiring rapid decision-making. Results of the study indicate that clinicians in this unique GPAT program utilizing collaboration between the ED team and clear GRU admission criteria selected ED clients with potential to benefit from the rehabilitation process and return to their homes in the community. Furthermore, 6% of the ED Group cases had poor outcomes of medical instability or mortality and 10% of the Acute Group had poor outcomes following GRU admission (see Table2).

Lesbian Women's Perceptions about Counselors Portraying Various Heterosexual Identity Statuses

Keller, Kari 01 December 2011 (has links)
Using Mohr's (2002) model of the heterosexual therapist as the theoretical framework, this study examined lesbian women's perceptions of heterosexual counselors based on heterosexual identity development. Specifically, it was hypothesized that lesbian women's perceptions of a heterosexual counselor would differ based on the counselor's working model of heterosexual identity development, as conceptualized by Mohr (2002). It was also hypothesized that Mohr's integrative working model would be perceived most positively by participants, followed by the politicized, democratic, and lastly the compulsory working model. Participants were 144 self-identified lesbian, gay, and/or queer-identified women surveyed through an email advertisement. Counselor heterosexual identity was operationalized through vignettes portraying dialogues between a counselor and client. Perceptions were measured by the Counselor Effectiveness Rating Scale (CERS; Atkinson & Wampold, 1982) and one item assessing utilization intent. Covariates included positive and negative trait affect, measured by the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS; Watson, Clark, & Tellegen, 1988), and internalized homophobia, assessed with the Lesbian Internalized Homophobia Scale (LIHS; Szymanski & Chung, 2001). Results indicated significant differences in perceptions between counselor working models, such that the compulsory counselor was rated significantly lower than the other three counselors, both in terms of credibility and utilization intent. Implications of this study include shedding light on the identity dynamics of privileged group members in a counseling setting, as well as reaffirming the importance of self-knowledge and training experiences for counselors of privilege to increase multicultural competence, especially in terms of sexual orientation.

D'Arcy-Dubois, Laurence January 2018 (has links)

Halléhn, Sofie, Persson, Rebecca January 2018 (has links)
The aim of this study was to examine the social workers experience and their thoughts about their work with elderly clients who suffers from an alcohol addiction. More specifically was to find out how the social workers themselves look upon their own competence in the work with this type of clients. We also wanted to find out how their cooperation with other authorities looks like in Malmö Stad. Our research questions were:•What experiences and thoughts do social workers have about their work with elderly people with alcohol addiction?•What are the social workers experiencing when it comes to collaboration with other authorities in their work with elderly clients with alcohol addiction? All six of our informants has volunteered to be a part of our study. The interviews are based on a semi structured model with open questions. The results of our study are that alcohol addiction is a problem that is hard to talk about and just because you are getting older does not mean that the problem is getting smaller. It is a problem that is getting more and more common among the ageing population and we need more research to be able to come up with social efforts that will meet this problem.
